Teacher And Parent Perspectives Regarding Challenging Behavior Of Preschool Children Of Deployed Parents, Stacie Phillips
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem addressed in this basic qualitative study was understanding the underlying reasons for challenging behavior exhibited in preschool children who experience disruption in social bonds and trust following deployment of a parent. Many teachers and parents are challenged by the need to support these children during this stressful time and untreated stress can lead to long-term issues. The purpose of this study was to increase understanding of teacher and parent perspectives of challenging behavior exhibited in preschool children experiencing disruption in social bonds and trust following deployment of a parent. Interviews of 7 parents and 7 preschool teachers addressed …

College Freshmen Perspectives Of Teaching And Learning About Emotional Wellbeing, Kathrine Ann Pigeon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This case study responded to a problem reported by freshman on evaluations from a university experience course. The students identified mental health as a significant barrier to succeeding academically, and the most critical area of students’ need. The rationale for this study was to develop policy recommendations based on the content of the interviews that provide new insights and information to improve student experiences, offer adequate support and relief, and more effectively meet student needs. The first research question explored the perceptions of first-year students enrolled in a freshmen experience course at a local 4-year college regarding their learning about …

Elementary School Principals’ Instructional Leadership Practices To Retain Novice Teachers In The Philippines, Gonzalo Miguel Pitpit
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Elementary school principals at the study site were inconsistently implementing instructional leadership practices to retain novice teachers in the Philippines. The purpose of this basic qualitative research design was to explore the instructional leadership practices implemented by elementary school principals that help retain novice teachers. The conceptual framework was the instructional leadership model characterized into three dimensions: (a) defining the school mission, (b) managing the instructional program, and (c) promoting a positive school learning climate. The research question was about what instructional leadership practices are implemented by elementary school principals to retain novice teachers in their job. Purposeful sampling was …

Perceptions Of Middle School Teachers’ Experiences With Student-Centered Learning Strategies, Lucy Judith Plaisir
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Teachers in the local research site are using student-centered learning (SCL) strategies as an instructional pedagogy to support students’ learning. However, they are experiencing barriers in implementing SCL strategies consistently. The purpose of this study was to examine teachers' perceptions of the barriers that prevent SCL strategies from being implemented consistently at a middle school in the Northeastern United States to support students’ learning. The conceptual framework used for this qualitative study was Schlossberg’s transitional theory. Data were gathered through semistructured interviews with 15 participants who taught at a middle school and used SCL strategies for at least 5 years. …
Effect Of Clinical Hours And Program Type On Nclex Pass Rates, Kara Potter
Effect Of Clinical Hours And Program Type On Nclex Pass Rates, Kara Potter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Clinical education is an essential portion of prelicensure nursing education throughout the United States. There is a lack of research examining clinical education in nursing programs and minimum competency for entry into practice as measured by the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX) results and differences in levels of care between associate degree (ADN) nurses and bachelor’s degree (BSN) nurses. The purposes of this study, guided by Benner’s novice to expert theory, were to determine whether the total number of clinical hours, program type (ADN vs. BSN) ,simulation hours, patient care clinical hours, and skills lab hours between ADN and BSN …
A Program Evaluation Of A Community College’S New Faculty Seminar, Kari Mclean Proft
A Program Evaluation Of A Community College’S New Faculty Seminar, Kari Mclean Proft
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A community college (CC) in the midwestern United States launched a New Faculty Seminar (NFS) in 1999 for new tenure-track faculty. The problem that prompted this project study is that the NFS has been implemented yearly since 1999 without a formal evaluation. Without an evaluation plan, college leadership cannot determine whether the program is meeting stated goals. The purpose of this program evaluation was to explore how faculty described the NFS inputs and processes they experienced and how they perceived the outcomes and impact of the NFS on their understanding of the CC environment and the development of their instructional …

Perspectives Of Mentor Teachers For Early Childhood Teacher Preparation, Shannon J. Rivera
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Early childhood (EC) teacher education programs and public-school partnerships have broadened preparation of preservice teachers by providing more learning opportunities during preservice field experiences. These experiences require mentoring from highly qualified supervising teachers. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore mentors’ perspectives of their qualifications to mentor EC preservice teachers in a 4-year university laboratory school. Ambrosetti’s theory of mentor preparation guided this study. The research question addressed mentor teachers’ perspectives of their mentoring qualifications for EC preservice teachers. A snowball sample of 8 mentor teachers, with at least 4 years’ experience mentoring EC preservice teachers, volunteered …

In Rwanda, the number of culturally minority students in higher education institutions has been increasing in recent years, yet the role of instructors and school administrators in utilizing culturally responsive teaching (CRT) methods for those students remains unclear. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to describe instructors’ and school administrators’ views of their roles in utilizing CRT methods. The conceptual framework for this study included CRT best teaching practices and approaches; institutional, personal, and instructional dimensions of CRT; and components of the preparation for and practice of CRT. The study was conducted at a university with three campuses …
Exploring Persistence Of Indigenous Students At A Midwest University, Michelle Lynne Sayers
Exploring Persistence Of Indigenous Students At A Midwest University, Michelle Lynne Sayers
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Indigenous students attending non-tribal colleges represent approximately 1% of the college student body, with a smaller percentage that graduate. Indigenous students often encounter racism and experience cultural differences. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore Indigenous students’ persistence at a mainstream college in the northern Midwest. Purposeful and snowball sampling was used to create a final sample of 10 self-identified Indigenous students who completed at least one semester and were 18 years or older, one full-time staff person, and two-part time student workers. Data also included a review of university strategic documents, social media pages, and observations …
Parent-Teacher Relationships Of Students Diagnosed With Autism, Job Burnout, And Stress As Predictors Of Teacher Self-Efficacy, Sohna Shook
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Excessive workload, personal stress, and a lack of resources are some of the factors that contribute to teacher stress and burnout. One third of new teachers quit the teaching profession within their first 3 years, half leaving within 5 years, and 10% quitting every year after that. Research has identified a relationship between work stress and burnout among teachers. However, this relationship has not been explored among teachers who have students diagnosed with autism in their classrooms. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between teacher job-related stress, burnout, quality of parent-teacher relationships, and teacher self-efficacy among …

Flipped Classroom Approach To A Critical Care Educational Program For New Graduates, Deborah Ann Smithers
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Of the new graduate registered nurses hired to work in critical care areas, a few percent do not receive a formal critical care orientation. Furthermore, there is a high attrition rate of new graduates hired to work in high acuity patient care units. Many resign before their first work anniversary due to a lack of education and training. An initiative was put forth by critical care administration, at the study site, to critical care clinical leadership to significantly revise a critical care educational offering known as critical care core. The revision would allow for the satisfaction of the novice nurses …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Mandated active shooter drills are necessary for students, especially in high school districts, where active shooter events are more prevalent. As a result, high school administrators and teachers face numerous implementation challenges and consequences that may threaten the student learning environment’s psychological balance. Guided by DeVos’s theory of school safety integration and crisis preparedness and three aspects of policy recommendations, this qualitative case study was designed to explore the challenges and perceptions of a high school administrator and teachers’ regarding implementing mandated active shooter drills while supporting the student’s psychological, social, emotional, and physical health. Through semi-structured interviews, one administrator …
Effectiveness Of Response To Intervention In Third Grade Reading Outcomes, Amanda Wentz
Effectiveness Of Response To Intervention In Third Grade Reading Outcomes, Amanda Wentz
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Reading continues to be a struggle for many students beyond primary ages. Response to Intervention (RTI) is a common approach in practice to improve reading outcomes, but it has not been researched with all populations. Studies on 3rd grade struggling readers are needed to ensure they receive appropriate support to become more successful readers. The theoretical foundations for this quantitative study included Vygotsky’s social constructivist theory and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The research questions examined whether participating in RTI had a significant influence on 3rd grade students’ reading outcomes from the beginning compared to the end of the school year. …

Adults' Use Of Mobile Learning Environments While Enrolled In General Educational Development Classes, Tia Wilkinson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Mobile learning environments (MLEs) offer ubiquitous learning opportunities for adults in General Educational Development (GED) programs. However, MLEs have not been integrated into most adult GED programs; therefore, little is known about the experiences of adult learners who use MLEs as part of their education. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore how adult learners described making connections within MLEs, how they perceived learning with MLEs, and how they expanded their use of MLEs. The principles of connectivism provided the conceptual framework for the study. Participants were 11 adult learners in GED programs in a Southern urban …

Performing Identities Of The Auditory-Verbal Deaf Students In The Classrooms: A Teacher's Performative Memoir, Tracy Edenfield
Performing Identities Of The Auditory-Verbal Deaf Students In The Classrooms: A Teacher's Performative Memoir, Tracy Edenfield
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
My dissertation, that incorporated performative storytelling and dance, is a memoir reflecting over fifty years of my lived experiences related to deafness as a multidimensional illustration that spans from my experience as a young child with a family member affected by Usher’s Syndrome; as an educational sign language interpreter; as a teacher of the deaf (TOD); and as an early intervention auditory-verbal therapist. Theoretically, my dissertation builds upon critical pedagogy (e.g., Baglieri & Shapiro, 2012; Freire, 1970/2009; McLaren & Crawford, 1998) and disability studies (e.g., Davis, 2002; Goodley, 2011; Siebers, 2008; Kitchens, 1998). The physical disability of deafness continues to …
The Rose Who Grew From Concrete: A Black Female Administrator's Perspective Of The Public School Experience For Black Girls Who Attend A Predominantly White Middle School In Southeast Georgia, Latashia S. Thomas
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This study explores the educational experiences of Black girls who attended a predominantly White school in Southeast Georgia from the perspective of a Black female administrator. Using Critical Race Theory (e.g. Bell, 1987, 1992, 1995; Delgado & Stefancic, 2001; Solorzano & Yosso, 2001) and Black Feminist Thought (e.g. Hill Collins, 2000; hooks, 1984/2000) as theoretical frameworks and memoir (Angelou, 1969/2009; Hurston, 1996) and fiction (Bell, 1992; Morrison, 1970/1993) as methodology, I explore ways in which Black girls are oppressed when they attend majority White public schools.
Six meanings emerged from this inquiry: (1) Writing my memoir has allowed me to …
Schools For Profit Or Schools For Education? A Christian School Principal’S Perspectives, Michael A. Crosby
Schools For Profit Or Schools For Education? A Christian School Principal’S Perspectives, Michael A. Crosby
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation is a series of speculative essays (Schubert, 1991) that address the forces of neoliberalism on schools today– both public and private. While there have been studies on the detrimental effects of high-stakes testing on public schools (e.g., Au, 2015; Giroux, 2014; Wacquant, 2000) as well as the associated harmful effects of school to prison pipeline (e.g., Saltman, 2016; Taubman, 2009), there remains little research associated with the damaging impacts of neoliberalism on Christian schools. Building upon the theoretical framework of critical pedagogy (e.g., Friere, 1970; Kincheloe, 2008; McLaren, 2015), I undertake a critical examination of neoliberalism’s calculated efforts …
Looking Through A Culturally Proficient Lens: Georgia Elementary Esol Teachers' Perceptions Of School Leaders, Mary C. Houser
Looking Through A Culturally Proficient Lens: Georgia Elementary Esol Teachers' Perceptions Of School Leaders, Mary C. Houser
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This study examines the perceptions of ESOL teachers in Georgia regarding their school leaders’ cultural proficiency in working with diverse learners. The hypothesis is that school leaders must embrace diversity within the school they supervise by promoting language learning and academic success through engagement and discourse, establishing a relationship with diverse students and their families, and show a vested interest in language learning programs. The issue surrounding this research is the lack of knowledge, interaction, respect, inclusion, and understanding that some school leaders demonstrate regarding ESOL students and their parents. Using Dewey’s Theory of Experience as a theoretical framework, narrative …
The Impact Of School Tasks On The Leadership Self-Efficacy Of Principals And Assistant Principals, Torri M. Jackson
The Impact Of School Tasks On The Leadership Self-Efficacy Of Principals And Assistant Principals, Torri M. Jackson
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
State and federal accountability standards for student achievement and school improvement have increased the focus on school leadership, specifically the leadership of school principals and assistant principals. The pressure to lead schools effectively while fulfilling instructional leadership and school management tasks could impact school administrators’ perceptions of their leadership capabilities. The purpose of this quantitative, cross-sectional study was to identify the relationship between the instructional leadership tasks and school management tasks of school administrators and their leadership self-efficacy across multiple demographics. Survey data were collected from 73 school administrators, which quantified the leadership self-efficacy of principals and assistant principals based …
Between And Behind The Lines: The Life Of High School Coaches, Mary Davis
Between And Behind The Lines: The Life Of High School Coaches, Mary Davis
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
In this study, I write about the emotional journey of high school athletic coaches’ experiences as they move through their day as teachers, coaches, and spouses/parents. The examination of the emotions and transitions high school coaches experience has been largely unresearched. There have been examinations of teachers, the impact coaches have on athletes, and a coach as a parent, but there is not extensive research on all three roles experienced by one person. High school athletics is a tremendous part of high school, and coaches have a tremendous impact not only on their players, but on the students they teach …
Exploring Health Attitudes And Academic-Community Engagement Of Faculty At Accredited Schools And Colleges Of Public Health In The U.S., Maria I. Olivas
Exploring Health Attitudes And Academic-Community Engagement Of Faculty At Accredited Schools And Colleges Of Public Health In The U.S., Maria I. Olivas
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Academic-community collaborations (ACCs) help communities identify health problems/priorities, improve social determinants of health, engage in the design and implementation of projects, and provide students with opportunities to learn outside the classrooms. Extensive research has focused on exploring challenges, facilitators, lessons learned, and best practices for conducting ACCs and engaging in partnerships. Nevertheless, no studies have evaluated the intra-organizational health attitudes of faculty in schools and colleges of public health and their impact on academic-community engagement. Organizational health attitudes matter because these are basic underlying assumptions that can shape the culture of academic-community engagement at schools and colleges of public health. …
Sport Coaches As Policy Actors: An Investigation Of The Interpretation And Enactment Of Disability And Inclusion Policy In Swimming In Victoria Australia, Andrew M. Hammond, Dawn Penney, Ruth Jeanes
Sport Coaches As Policy Actors: An Investigation Of The Interpretation And Enactment Of Disability And Inclusion Policy In Swimming In Victoria Australia, Andrew M. Hammond, Dawn Penney, Ruth Jeanes
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This paper draws upon education policy sociology, and sport coaching literature, in critically examining sport coaches as policy actors. Stephen Ball and colleagues’ conceptualisation of different policy actor positions and roles provided the framework for research that investigated how eight professional swimming coaches in Victoria, Australia, interpreted and enacted disability and inclusion policy. A discourse analysis of semi-structured interviews with the eight coaches reveals the complexities associated with how and why different coaches interpret and enact disability and inclusion policy imperatives in different ways in their specific club contexts. Data are presented that shows coaches adopting multiple and hybrid policy …
The ‘Obvious’ Stuff: Exploring The Mundane Realities Of Students’ Digital Technology Use In School, Neil Selwyn, Selena Nemorin, Scott Bulfin, Nicola F. Johnson
The ‘Obvious’ Stuff: Exploring The Mundane Realities Of Students’ Digital Technology Use In School, Neil Selwyn, Selena Nemorin, Scott Bulfin, Nicola F. Johnson
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This paper explores the ways in which students perceive digital technology as being helpful and/or useful to their schooling. Drawing upon survey data from students (n=1174) across three Australian high schools, the paper highlights seventeen distinct digital ‘benefits’ in domains such as information seeking, writing and composition, accessing prescribed work, scheduling and managing study tasks. While these data confirm the centrality of such technologies to students’ experiences of school, they also suggest that digital technology is not substantially changing or ‘transforming’ the nature of schools and schooling per se. Instead, students were most likely to associate digital technologies with managing …
A Measure Of Classroom Management: Validation Of A Pre-Service Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale, Eileen Slater, Susan Main
A Measure Of Classroom Management: Validation Of A Pre-Service Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale, Eileen Slater, Susan Main
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Classroom management skills are essential for effective teaching and consequently form an integral part of undergraduate teaching degrees. Self-efficacy in classroom management influences an individual’s willingness to undertake specific actions and their perseverance in the face of difficulties in executing these actions. In order to track the progress of pre-service teachers’ self-efficacy in classroom management, an easy to administer Classroom Management Self Efficacy Instrument (CMSEI) was developed and piloted with a third year cohort of pre-service teachers. This article reports on the psychometric properties of the CMSEI as determined through a Rasch analysis. The analysis supports the Classroom Management Self …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This article describes the needs analysis, implementation and outcomes of a pilot program aimed at creating books with families in ways that represent their language and culture. Creating Books in Communities is part of Better Beginnings, a state-wide program, developed by the State Library of Western Australia, for children and their families, that aims to develop literacy skills through fostering a love of books and language. Literature about the importance of recognising and valuing home languages and culture in supporting early literacy learning and the impact of family literacy programs is explored to provide a background to the program. The …
School Librarians As Literacy Educators Within A Complex Role, Margaret K. Merga
School Librarians As Literacy Educators Within A Complex Role, Margaret K. Merga
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Librarians in schools are expected to play an important role as literacy educators, and have a positive impact on young people’s literacy learning. However in the context of their diverse workload, relatively little is known about how this aspect of their role sits within its competing demands, and the exact scope of the literacy educator requirements. Using a hybrid approach to content analysis, this article analyses 40 recent job description documents to identify the nature and prevalence of different aspects of the role, and to explore the literacy educator aspect of this profession. Findings suggest that while the literacy educator …
Teachers’ Views On Effective Classroom Management: A Mixed-Methods Investigation In Western Australian High Schools, Helen Egeberg, Andrew Mcconney, Anne Price
Teachers’ Views On Effective Classroom Management: A Mixed-Methods Investigation In Western Australian High Schools, Helen Egeberg, Andrew Mcconney, Anne Price
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
© 2020, The Author(s). Teachers’ views about teaching, learning and school experiences are important considerations in education. As the central participants in classroom interactions, students and teachers naturally have strong views about what it takes to manage learning and surrounding behaviours effectively. With this in mind and because we believe that ignoring the thinking of either of these stakeholders would be to the detriment of teaching and teacher education, we focused on hearing and understanding teachers’ voices about teaching, learning and classroom management. Our aim was to further clarify teachers’ perspectives on how educators create quality learning environments as well …
