Introducing Universal Design In Architectural Education, Ira Verma

Papers

Architects have an important role in designing and creating buildings and outdoor environments for inclusion. Previously, the knowledge on accessibility in the architectural education has been focusing on the legislation regarding accessibility of public buildings and apartments buildings for special groups of people. The aspect of the user and the Universal Design thinking have been lacking in the education. Since 2015, in the Department of Architecture, Aalto University, Finland, a course on User Driven Space Design has been introduced. Each year approximately 15 master level students have been participating in the course. The course introduces knowledge on user-oriented space design …

Representation, Access And Participation For People With Disabilities In Local Government, Elisabeth Kokkin Koppe Jan 2018

Representation, Access And Participation For People With Disabilities In Local Government, Elisabeth Kokkin Koppe

Papers

After 1948 and the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights there was little attention to individual rights as such. The focus was mostly on anti-colonialism and collective rights for peoples, like the right to self-determination for indigenous and tribal peoples living in independent states and freedom from colonialism (Moyn, 2010b) p. 85-86. The awareness regarding individual rights was actually invoked in the 70’s. It was President Jimmy Carter who in January 1977 in his inauguration speech proclaimed: "Because we are free we can never be indifferent to the fate of freedom elsewhere…. Our commitment to human rights must …

Teaching Squares: Crossing New Borders, Bridgette Atkins, William J. Hunter, Annette Baxter, Anna Natoli Jan 2018

Teaching Squares: Crossing New Borders, Bridgette Atkins, William J. Hunter, Annette Baxter, Anna Natoli

Papers

Teaching Squares is a teaching development initiative that brings instructors together in small groups to observe one-another’s classes and reflect on their experiences in a non-judgmental, supportive environment (University of Waterloo, (n.d.). Durham College, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), and a key industry partner, Ontario Power Generation (OPG), have partnered on a Teaching Squares initiative, enabling primarily face-to-face discussions amongst instructors at all three institutions. Despite positive feedback and minimal time demands, building faculty enrollment and involvement remains challenging to engage instructors across various disciplines, fields, and delivery formats. In the fall 2017 semester, a professor teaching …

Maneuvering Area, Corridors And Lobbies For Wheeled Mobility Aid Users, Alborz Ahosseini Jan 2018

Maneuvering Area, Corridors And Lobbies For Wheeled Mobility Aid Users, Alborz Ahosseini

Papers

World is evolving rapidly, and new accessibility equipment and devices are being introduced which makes life easier for the people with disabilities. However, the rapid developments in the evolution of accessibility equipment may not always be coordinated with the existing accessibility norms and standards. The gap between accessibility provisions in built environments and developments in accessibility equipment is increasing by not taking the evolution of assistive equipment into account. By having a future orientated view on the development of accessibility equipment, some of the existing accessibility norms and provisions may thus require to change significantly. One of the important assistive …

Adopting More Diverse Models Of Organisation In Higher Education- The Implications For Institutional Strategy., Tom Doyle Jan 2018

Adopting More Diverse Models Of Organisation In Higher Education- The Implications For Institutional Strategy., Tom Doyle

Papers

A universal approach to strategy formulation in higher education implies one that is fit for the many and complex contingencies faced by that institution. Reviews of current form of strategising indicate that the present approach to strategic management falls short of meeting that criterion. The paper suggests that this deficiency might be addressed by adopting a much more fluid perception of the university as an organisation and devising a form of strategic management that that takes greater account of the paradoxical nature of the institution and the environment in which it operates. It argues that deficiencies in the present form …

Designing The Transition To Higher Education For Students From Under-Represented Groups, Trevor Vaugh, Martha Brandes, Gemma Lynch, Olivia Mcneill, Alyssa Brigham Jan 2018

Designing The Transition To Higher Education For Students From Under-Represented Groups, Trevor Vaugh, Martha Brandes, Gemma Lynch, Olivia Mcneill, Alyssa Brigham

Papers

Universities are increasingly seeking to open access routes and identify ways of encouraging under-represented groups to consider higher education as an option. This cohort of students often have distinct challenges associated with disability, maturity and socioeconomic disadvantage. Maynooth University, through the Maynooth University access programme (MAP) and the Launchpad Orientation Programme (Launchpad), has proven successful in supporting these groups, helping them transition into and through higher education. Unfortunately the challenges associated with under-represented groups can lead to increased, often unarticulated difficulties, resulting in greater reliance on services and higher dropout rates compared to the average student. We discuss here a …

Higher Education, Adaptive Change, And The Adult Learner: Moving From Academic Access To Transformative Excellence, Patrick Guilbaud, Heather Tillberg-Webb

Winthrop Faculty and Staff Publications

As the profile of postbaccalaureate students across the country continues to become older and more diverse, colleges and universities of all sizes and types — state, private, technical, and community — are repositioning themselves to effectively serve a broader mix of learners. However, due to the unique background, professional goals, and academic interests of adult learners, higher education institutions (HEIs) must be adaptive across all of their program development, education delivery, administrative service, and student support units to meet the challenge of serving all of their learner constituencies effectively.

We propose implementing the supporting transformative excellence (STE) framework, which focuses …

The Importance Of Automaticity Development In Mathematics, Austin T. Baker, Josh Cuevas Jan 2018

The Importance Of Automaticity Development In Mathematics, Austin T. Baker, Josh Cuevas

Georgia Educational Researcher

This study examined whether students were reaching automaticity with single digit multiplication facts. A fourteen question interview was used to collect data. The first three questions asked the student basic information about themselves and their current math teacher. The next seven questions were math facts. The math facts chosen for the interview were a range of difficulty, starting with a simple problem like 1 x 9 and increasing in difficulty to 6 x 9. The last four questions were open-ended with the intent of gaining insight into whether the students were using strategies to complete the problems or if they …

Alternative Seating And Students' Perceptions: Implications For The Learning Environment, Alicia Stapp Jan 2018

Alternative Seating And Students' Perceptions: Implications For The Learning Environment, Alicia Stapp

Georgia Educational Researcher

Expectations placed on educators to improve academic performance continue to increase across the United States. One reason for this rise in expectancy is the enactment of The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015. Replacing the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2002, the ESSA mandates that “all students are taught to high academic standards” (ESSA, 2015). Subsequently, educators constantly seek best practices that foster effective learning environments. A component of the learning environment oftentimes excluded from research is the physical structure of a classroom, such as the type of seating in a classroom. Research suggests that students who …

Georgia Educational Researcher

The increase in demand for college and career ready students has driven the need for education reform to ensure K–12 schools can support student learning across all content areas and grade levels. A STEM Certification process was established by the Georgia Department of Education as part of an effort to reform public school STEM education. Additionally, an international STEM Certification procedure developed by AdvancED has been implemented in several Georgia schools. As a significant component of STEM certification guidelines, problem based learning has been incorporated to stimulate student interest in science, facilitate self-regulation, and increase pedagogical and content knowledge. As …

Sources Of Science Teaching Self-Efficacy For Preservice Elementary Teachers In Science Content Courses, Deepika Menon, Troy D. Sadler

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Self-efficacy beliefs play a major role in determining teachers’ science teaching practices and have been a topic of great interest in the area of preservice science teacher education. This qualitative study investigated factors that influenced preservice elementary teachers’ science teaching self-efficacy beliefs in a physical science content course. The primary data sources included Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument-B (STEBI-B) responses, two semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and artifacts. Analysis of STEBI-B data was used to select 18 participants with varying levels of self-efficacy beliefs: low, medium, and high. Four categories representing course-related factors contributing towards participants’ science teaching self-efficacy beliefs were …

The Use Of Zingari/Nomadi/Rom In Italian Crime Discourse, Theresa Catalano Jan 2018

The Use Of Zingari/Nomadi/Rom In Italian Crime Discourse, Theresa Catalano

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This study examines the use of the metonymies zingari/nomadi/rom [Gypsies/Nomads/Roma] in Italian media discourse, in order to critically reflect on their relation to the perception of Roma. The author analyses the frequency of these terms in general discourse and crime discourse, as well as the way they are used in context. The findings reveal that nomadi and rom are used to directly and indirectly index Roma, and have a significant impact on their ethnicization and criminalization. In addition, the episodic framing of crime events, combined with the use of these metonymies, erases the Italian government’s responsibility for the conditions of …

A Study Of Late Registration At Four Community Colleges, Meredith Courtney Nourie-Manuele Jan 2018

A Study Of Late Registration At Four Community Colleges, Meredith Courtney Nourie-Manuele

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

At the community college level, a debated policy is whether to keep the option for late registration. Most colleges define late registration as registration that occurs any time after the first day of the semester (O’Banion, 2012). Some community colleges have opted to eliminate late registration, believing, based on previous studies, that late registration is a barrier to students and their success (Bolt, 2013; Hale & Bray, 2011; Jones, 2015; Smith, Street, & Olivarez, 2002; Weiss, 1999). Others assert late registration remain an option maintaining that the open access designation associated with the community college demands that students not be …

Corruption In Public Education, Cade M. Olmstead Jan 2018

Corruption In Public Education, Cade M. Olmstead

Undergraduate Student Work

Public education is a key civil institution, and its functions have important implications for the well-being and development any modern society. But as a public institution, it is not free from crime and corrupt influence, especially in areas dealing with monetary exchange. Much research has been conducted looking at corruption, but investigations and analyses specifically concerned with corruption in education are sparse. Inquiries into the state of corruption in the former Soviet bloc and China are present but research into the United States’ situation has hitherto been neglected. Reliable data must first be identified before such analyses can take place. …

The purpose of this paper is to share online resources available to students at a global level, to include healthcare administration programs and any other course of study. While somewhat daunting in nature, this editorial offers faculty of healthcare administration (and other related programs of study) the opportunity to explore what course materials (of any format) may be posted to commercial external websites by current and/or previous students for ongoing collaboration among academic cohorts. Findings include an opportunity for students in any program, at any level, to post individual and/or copyrighted course materials on public, external websites, often with an …

Listening To The Song Of Life: An Autoethnographic Account Of Teaching An Undergraduate Listening Course, E. James Baesler Jan 2018

Listening To The Song Of Life: An Autoethnographic Account Of Teaching An Undergraduate Listening Course, E. James Baesler

Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications

A new approach to teaching the listening course at the undergraduate level provides opportunities for students to experience the SONG of life. SONG is an acronym for listening to the whole of life in the contexts of Self (e.g., discerning inner wisdom), Others (e.g., connecting with feelings and needs), Nature (beholding the beauty of nature), and God (e.g., discovering and connecting with the divine). A rationale and description of the new listening course is provided followed by a chronological autoethnographic account of teaching/learning the SONG of life using the four contexts as verses of the SONG with twenty undergraduate students …

Failing Better: Scaffolding Learning With The Metaliteracy Badging System, Kelsey L. O'Brien

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

The Metaliteracy Badging System, collaboratively produced by educators from across the State University of New York (SUNY), has undergone several trials and transformations. Over the course of this iterative journey, this resource has served in often-unexpected ways as a flexible educational tool that facilitates meaningful curriculum design and collaborative teaching. This chapter provides an overview of the design and implementation of the system, along with our challenges and goals moving forward. Just as we teach our students to fail better, we too have drawn on our setbacks as opportunities for growth and improvement.
