The Causes, Impact, And Cost Of Teacher Turnover, Jenny M. Young

This literature review examines research studies regarding the causes, impact, and cost of teacher turnover in U.S. schools. Results indicate a strong association between schools with high teacher turnover rates and high rates of students of color. Teachers also report more dissatisfaction with the working conditions and school leadership in schools with high teacher turnover rates. Studies indicate high rates of teacher turnover can have a negative impact on both student achievement and school culture. Overwhelmingly, schools serving a high percentage of students of color bear the majority of this impact. Additionally, schools and districts consume valuable financial resources replacing …

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate and evaluate best practices in a co-teaching setting between two licensed educators, one being the content teacher and the other an English Language Learner (ELL) specialist. This thesis investigated the use and acquisition of slang by ELL/EFL learners. Additionally, it sought to better understand if slang is being taught in ELL/EFL classrooms, what are effective methods to teach slang, and if learning environment is a factor in the acquisition. Thirty-five scientifically-based research studies were reviewed to help answer these questions. This study examined three hypothesized math-self efficacy (MSE) sources that inhibit adult basic education male prisoner mathematics achievement. Previous correctional studies indicated that United States prisoners tend to have low self-efficacy and therefore lower academic achievement (Greve & Enzmann, 2003). Adult education studies also indicated lower self-efficacy in adults older than age 20 who take coursework to complete their high school diploma (Jameson & Fusco, 2014). Survey studies of MSE factors from analysis showed that students who self-reported lower self-confidence, negative self-beliefs, increased math anxieties, and greater devaluation of math’s usefulness to their future employment have significant barriers to math …

For various reasons, social anxiety is linked to excessive drinking and binge eating/exercising. A comorbid relationship exists between anxiety, depression and sleep disturbance. The present study reviews the current literature related to culturally relevant nutrition education and its applicability to student learning within a secondary school setting. Specifically, this study examines how a youth participatory action research (YPAR) framework can be used to introduce students to the Diet Decolonization concept. In tandem, these ideals seek to improve student nutrition through evidence-based instruction, while also remaining sensitive to students’ diverse backgrounds. A tentative YPAR research design is offered, as well as recommendations for researchers to avoid bias and promote reflective thought prior to embarking on this type of research.

The objective of this study was to determine how personality traits affect burnout likelihood among special education teachers. This involved investigating whether personality traits matched individuals’ choice of profession and their probability of experiencing burnout. Burned-out individuals often experience physical fatigue, long-term exhaustion, feelings of hopelessness, negative attitude towards others, and depersonalization. This study examined the relationship of work stressors and perceived organizational support on work engagement for nurse managers in geriatric care practice settings. A non-experimental descriptive, cross sectional design examined the relationship in nurse managers working for member organizations of two Minnesota aging services trade associations: LeadingAge and Care Providers. The National History Day program has been utilized in a Southeastern Minnesota school on and off since Minnesota began participating in the program in the 1980s. This secondary data analysis sought to determine the impact that embedding National History Day programming would have on the achievement of students on two standardized tests, the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment III and the Northwest Evaluation Association Measures of Academic Progress. This paper identifies the risk factors shared by students who receive special education services under the category of emotional and behavioral disorders and gang affiliated youth. It also recognizes the role an educator can play in the identification of these risk factors and the prevention of gang involvement. The connection between both focus groups is profound and often a result of an environment not chosen by the student. Adverse childhood experiences are complex traumatic events that can produce a powerful stress response in a child’s brain and body, which has the potential to influence their development.
