Gender equity has been a prominent aspect of equity concerns in public policy. The gender dimension has led to widespread advocacy and focused attention on equity in other than economic areas, such as education, health, decision-making, violence against women and political participation. The human development approach offers a capability-based approach to gender equity in development that is a departure from traditions focused on income and growth. Gender concerns have given the approach the power and flexibility to encompass aspects of inequality that would otherwise go unremarked. Social networks and communities are rapidly expanding and changing due to the accelerating pace of globalization. In this article, we examine new possibilities for the reform of curriculum and educational research in a way that is responsive to increasingly multicultural and global communities. Drawing on literatures in the areas of multicultural, global, and civic education, we conducted a critical qualitative case study of four elementary school teachers. Desertification describes circumstances of land degradation in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid regions resulting from the climatic variation and human activities. The Effects Of A Family-Based Educational Intervention On The Prevention Of Lead Poisoning In Children, Loraine Wasserman

Parents completed a survey measuring their knowledge of lead poisoning. Children, 24 to 36 months old received two blood lead level screens. Parents in the treatment group showed significantly higher scores on the posttest, and their children showed greater decreased blood lead levels than participants in the control group.

The authors report on their qualitative study of eight students in a class on writing for publication and the nature of the writing process in academia. While the participants found value and purpose in writing and scholarly writing, they had great difficulty with criticism and using feedback in constructive ways.

This is a qualitative study with eighth-grade students assessing their views of bias within the evolution chapters of two Florida state-adopted texts. The students determined that a significant degree of bias exists. The texts fail to develop the scientific "habits-of-mind" as stated in the school district's "science as inquiry" competencies.

The Mismatch Of The Language Of Textbooks And Language Of Esl Students In Content Classrooms, Claudia G. Grigorescu, Eric Dwyer

Debate concerning bilingual education effectiveness may focus around the definition of academic language. Two aspects of such-vocabulary and grammar-were examined in 4th and 8th grade textbooks. Results showed substantial increases in the number of abstract words and complex sentences, suggesting more daunting language demands for older non-English-speaking students.

A stratified sample of teachers was surveyed to determine their opinion about a Pre-k Program for Children with Disabilities. The results revealed that the teachers were satisfied with their students' progress, the support received from their administrators and district, and their ability to implement the curriculum to meet students' needs.

The effect of sportspersonship instruction on the behaviors of second grade physical education students was examined. Instruction consisted of defining sportspersonship focus words, modifying the words into target behaviors, modeling the behaviors, and reinforcing the behaviors. Results revealed that students from two intact classes improved their behaviors.

The effect of embedding math skills into physical education lessons on math achievement of second grade students in two classes was investigated. There were no statistical differences between the experimental (PE/Math) group and the control group. However, practical observations indicated more research is needed in this area.

This study investigated the effects of Reading While Listening narration rates on elementary students' comprehension. Slow, normal and sentence interval narration rates were used. Results showed higher comprehension scores with the slow narration rate for students with low reading levels, and normal rate for high and medium level readers

Research studies repeatedly emphasize the importance of vocabulary capabilities to a large variety of academic activities. This study compared a learning strategy that exclusively involved the visual review of vocabulary word-definition pairs to a strategy that, in addition, prompted participants to attempt free-recall retrieval of words to match specific definitions. This comparison attempted to identify which of the two strategies best produces longer-term attainment of vocabulary knowledge. A group of participants (N = 20) used a web-based system to take a pre-test over 21 relatively difficult SAT-review vocabulary words using a drag and drop graphical user interface. The Convergence Of Two Algorithms For Compressed Sensing Based Tomography, Xiezhang Li, Jiehua Zhu

The constrained total variation minimization has been developed successfully for image reconstruction in computed tomography. In this paper, the block component averaging and diagonally-relaxed orthogonal projection methods are proposed to incorporate with the total variation minimization in the compressed sensing framework. The convergence of the algorithms under a certain condition is derived. Examples are given to illustrate their convergence behavior and noise performance.
