Cloud Computing: Strategies For Cloud Computing Adoption, Faith J. Shimba
Cloud Computing: Strategies For Cloud Computing Adoption, Faith J. Shimba
Faith Joel Shimba
The advent of cloud computing in recent years has sparked an interest from different IT stakeholders. This is a result of the new economic model for the IT department that cloud computing promises. The model promises to remove the need for heavy investment for limited IT resources towards renting IT resources and paying based on usage. Although, the adoption of cloud computing promises various benefits to organizations, a successful adoption requires an understanding of different dynamics and expertise in diverse domains. Currently there are inadequate guidelines for adoption and this book proposes a roadmap for cloud computing adoption called ROCCA. …

Leaching Mechanism Of Semiconducting Minerals, Fathi Habashi
Fathi Habashi
The mechanism of leaching of semiconducting minerals such as PbS, ZnS, UO2, etc., has been the subject of intensive speculation by hydrometallurgists in the early 1950s. The electrochemical mechanism proposed in 1970 by the author in volume 2 of his Principles of Extractive Metallurgy avoids the assumption of forming intermediate complexes that cannot be isolated or identified.

Use Of Mobile Phone Computing For Development Of Student 21st Century Skills, Susan M. Merritt, R. Lara Lee
Cornerstone 2 Reports : Community Outreach and Empowerment Through Service Learning and Volunteerism
Mobile phone computing enables immediate capture and transfer of data, images, notes and experiences from the field to a repository where retrieval, analysis, edits, aggregation, and further development are possible. Immediate findings and later results can be shared on the Web with local and global communities, and development of integrated service learning projects in concert with underserved communities is possible using this mode of information gathering and sharing.
Mobile phone computing incorporates moments when participants build tomorrow's skills while addressing today's learning goals. Use of digital tools and supporting resources bring real world problems into focus. Mobile phone computing enables …

College Of Engineering Senior Design Competition Fall 2010, University Of Nevada, Las Vegas
Senior Projects (COE)
Part of every UNLV engineering student’s academic experience, the senior design project stimulates engineering innovation and entrepreneurship. Each student in their senior year chooses, plans, designs, and prototypes a product in this required element of the curriculum. A capstone to the student’s educational career, the senior design project encourages the student to use everything learned in the engineering program to create a practical, real world solution to an engineering challenge.
The senior design competition helps to focus the senior students in increasing the quality and potential for commercial application for their design projects. Judges from local industry evaluate the projects …

Bridging The Gap Between The Industrial Environment And The Classroom Via Project-Based Learning, Michael W. Martin
Bridging The Gap Between The Industrial Environment And The Classroom Via Project-Based Learning, Michael W. Martin
Presentation
Recent engineering education research has concluded that most engineering curricula do not promote attainment of many characteristics desired in practicing engineers. Methods to attain these characteristics include both project-based learning (PBL) and simulation of workplace situations in the educational environment. The presenter will outline the use of both PBL and workplace simulation through the implementation of a semester-long project in a senior-level Data Acquisition course taught out of the Department of Engineering Technology at Northern Michigan University. A typical undergraduate experimental analysis or data acquisition course will review topics including; sensoring, hardware requirements, testing techniques, computer integration, software use, and …

Beyond Ning: Rolling Your Own Social Network, Aaron Sumner
SIDLIT Conference
Ning has recently announced plans to discontinue its free service, requiring network creators to pay for service or leave Ning altogether. In this session we'll look at how this decision affects educational users of Ning, as well as alternative, DIY social networking software packages such as Elgg, Buddypress, and Community Engine.

Absolute Ground-State Nitrogen Atom Density In A N2/Ch4 Late Afterglow: Talif Experiments And Modelling Studies, Et. Es-Sebbar, M.-C. Gazeau, Y. Benilan, A. Jolly, C D. Pintassilgo
Dr. Et-touhami Es-sebbar
Following a first study on a late afterglow in flowing pure nitrogen post discharge, we report new two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence (TALIF) measurements of the absolute ground-state atomic nitrogen density N(4S) and investigate the influence of methane introduced downstream from the discharge by varying the CH4 mixing ratio from 0% up to 50%. The N (4S) maximum density is about 2.2 × 1015 cm−3 in pure N2 for a residence time of 22 ms and does not change significantly for methane mixing ratio up to ~15%, while above, a drastic decrease is observed. The influence of the residence time has …

High School Student Interests In Architecture, Construction, And Engineering Education, Krishna P. Kisi
High School Student Interests In Architecture, Construction, And Engineering Education, Krishna P. Kisi
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
It is a common and widely held belief that the greatest influencing factor for high school students to enter an architecture-, construction-, or engineering-education program is because either their parents, relatives or friends work or have worked in the industry. However, there is little research that supports this belief. The focus of this research was to analyze characteristics and academic interests of Clark County School District (CCSD) Career and Technical Academies (CATA) students enrolled in architecture, construction and engineering (ACE) curricula.
This research analyzed data collected from a survey conducted by CCSD of their students enrolled in ACE courses. Comprehensive …
Quality Assurance In Engineering Education: A Systems Perspective, Mildred Genevieve Louidor
Quality Assurance In Engineering Education: A Systems Perspective, Mildred Genevieve Louidor
Masters Theses
Engineering education reform has been a topic of discussion for the last twenty years. The concern has only intensified in recent years as stakeholders strive to improve quality in engineering education. Today, stakeholders are recognizing that one of the keys to successful engineering education reform is in taking a systems view of higher education. Academic departments within the higher education system are organized around academic disciplines for the purpose of creating, transferring, and applying knowledge in three principal areas: teaching, research and service. This study addresses the need for quality improvement in the engineering higher education system by first completing …
Global Competence: Determination Of Its Importance For Engineers Working In A Global Environment, Gregg M. Warnick
Global Competence: Determination Of Its Importance For Engineers Working In A Global Environment, Gregg M. Warnick
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
We live and work in a world that is even more interconnected and interdependent than ever before. Engineers must now not only develop technical engineering competence, but must also develop additional skills and competencies including global competence to obtain success within a global engineering environment.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether multinational companies considered global competence an important skill in mechanical engineering graduates when making hiring decisions. The study was an exploratory study that utilized an extensive literature review to identify eight global competencies for engineering success within a global environment and also included a survey instrument …
