Quality Assurance In Engineering Education: A Systems Perspective, Mildred Genevieve Louidor Aug 2010

Quality Assurance In Engineering Education: A Systems Perspective, Mildred Genevieve Louidor

Masters Theses

Engineering education reform has been a topic of discussion for the last twenty years. The concern has only intensified in recent years as stakeholders strive to improve quality in engineering education. Today, stakeholders are recognizing that one of the keys to successful engineering education reform is in taking a systems view of higher education. Academic departments within the higher education system are organized around academic disciplines for the purpose of creating, transferring, and applying knowledge in three principal areas: teaching, research and service. This study addresses the need for quality improvement in the engineering higher education system by first completing …

High School Student Interests In Architecture, Construction, And Engineering Education, Krishna P. Kisi Aug 2010

High School Student Interests In Architecture, Construction, And Engineering Education, Krishna P. Kisi

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

It is a common and widely held belief that the greatest influencing factor for high school students to enter an architecture-, construction-, or engineering-education program is because either their parents, relatives or friends work or have worked in the industry. However, there is little research that supports this belief. The focus of this research was to analyze characteristics and academic interests of Clark County School District (CCSD) Career and Technical Academies (CATA) students enrolled in architecture, construction and engineering (ACE) curricula.

This research analyzed data collected from a survey conducted by CCSD of their students enrolled in ACE courses. Comprehensive …

Determining The Utility Of Technology For Education, Brian Spencer Dillon Apr 2010

Determining The Utility Of Technology For Education, Brian Spencer Dillon

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

There is a substantial debate concerning the place of technology in education. This debate has been going on over every technology introduced through at least three millennia although the modern version takes place in journal articles. Technology, in the general sense, is already in the educational arena 1n ways which have become so commonplace that we hardly question them today. More modern technologies, however, meet perpetual resistance in achieving their potential. This paper calls into question the most recent trend in research and suggests a new research paradigm which focuses not only on student achievement, but on a variety of …

Elementary Electronic Kits & Interactive Web Database, Anne Racquel Bacani Mar 2010

Elementary Electronic Kits & Interactive Web Database, Anne Racquel Bacani

Computer Engineering

The Elementary Electronic Kit and Interactive Web Database (E-Kit) project will focus on bridging the gap between Cal Poly students and local elementary schools to raise interests in engineering. Its main purpose is to expose local elementary school students to basic engineering concepts through simple interactive engineering experiments and lessons. The initial idea and proposal for this project was introduced by John Oliver, senior project advisor, whose main goal is to provide a service that would allow local elementary school teachers to bring in Cal Poly student volunteers to teach basic engineering lessons to their class. Lessons will focus on …

E-Quality: Using Dimensional Index Values Towards Improving Classification Accuracy, Prashanth Devaram Jan 2010

E-Quality: Using Dimensional Index Values Towards Improving Classification Accuracy, Prashanth Devaram

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

E-quality is a process through which inspection of the process and quality of the part produced is done online resulting in the improvement of the process and reduction in the amount of time consumed for the overall process. Automated quality control involves using a methodology to classify the parts based on the dimensions of the features on a part. However, achieving 100% classification accuracy is not an easy task, especially in area of quality control where small differences in dimensions result in part fall into a different category. In this study, a novel approach for modifying the data before being …

Engineering Design Educational Model: From Skills To Objectives, Jose Gabriel Davila Rangel Jan 2010

Engineering Design Educational Model: From Skills To Objectives, Jose Gabriel Davila Rangel

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The objective of this thesis is to develop an engineering design educational pedagogy on how to improve the engineering design learning experience. The design engineering activity is a complex mix of skills and knowledge that has been taught over decades by directly delivering to the students the design methodologies developed by design researchers and by exposing the students to open ended projects that could develop their design skills. Understanding this we can conclude that the three main pedagogical components of a successful educational design experience are: the design skills, the design methods and the design projects. On one hand, the …
