The purpose of this paper is to explore how context and culture affected the nutrient intakes and complementary feeding (process of feeding solid foods in addition to breast milk) practices of 6 to 12 month old infants in sub-Saharan Africa to generate appropriate nutrition education approaches.

Researchers have recognized several factors that are formidable forces preventing African Americans and other minorities to achieve their fullest potentials in organizations (Thomas, 1989; Hackett & Byers 1996). Studies have revealed that African American women are more disadvantaged than African American men in the career development process (Cox & Blake 1991; Cox, 1993; Palmer, 2001). Transformative Learning Intervention: Effect On Functional Health Literacy And Diabetes Knowledge In Older African Americans, Daphne W. Ntiri, Merry Stewart

This study evaluated the effect of a transformative learning intervention on functional health literacy and diabetes knowledge in older African Americans. Twenty participants from senior community centers completed a six session intervention and three health literacy tests. Participants’ verbal responses affirmed the positive influence of the TL principles.

This paper introduces a model of arts-based research using performance to center a sub-altern perspective utilizing a feminist process of data analysis and representation. Stories are collected from narrative interviews and then analyzed and expressed as performance text in the communities where they originated. Research becomes accessible beyond the academy while purposely centering previously marginalized voices.

In the coming years, the community college will experience unprecedented turnover in its leadership, especially among its senior ranks (Shults, 2001; Weisman & Vaughan, 2001; 2006). Weisman & Vaughan (2006) note that 84 percent of community college Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) plan to retire by 2016. Primarily, the ‘impending’ leadership void is being created by educators who entered the community college in the 1960s and 1970s, and have served in these institutions for decades (Phillippe & Sullivan, 2005; Schults, 2001). This basic interpretive qualitative study explored docents’ perceptions of their interpretive role and sought to determine how those perceptions shape docents’ practice. The conceptual frameworks of hermeneutics and symbolic interactionism inform the study. The study offers a view into the world of volunteer adult educators in non-formal education settings.

This paper is a qualitative case study of the role of culture in the information-seeking process. This study revealed that culture does affect how we locate, evaluate and value information and thus specific kinds of knowledge. Librarians and educators must engage in discussions on “Critical Information Literacy” where information is tied to knowledge creation that does not limit learners to a specific cultural worldview. Information and information-seeking processes cannot be separated from knowledge production.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the role of adult education faculty in the preparation of anti-racist adult education scholars. We examine this issue through a brief discussion of adult education literature and relevant literature from other disciplines. We recommend a call to action which promotes the deliberate and strategic development of anti-racist adult education scholars and prepares faculty for their roles toward this end.

The objectives of this action research are to examine how a transformative learning approach in a university-level ESL setting improved the English language skills of two classes of 32 learners, and how this approach influenced their perspectives on a number of issues. Findings indicate that many learners experience significant gains in their English language abilities, increased self-confidence in English, and perspective shifts regarding the language learning process, other cultures, and a number of social issues.

Here, we present a conceptual model for a holistic approach to workforce literacy development. In this model we argue that the adult literacy development process is influenced by multiple stakeholders – literacy providers, government agencies, businesses, and communities. This study explores the significance of race from a social constructionist perspective. Examples of legal cases set the stage for current definitions of whiteness and racial identification. A community-based transformational organizing model is explained by describing the challenges and educational strategies used by an immigrant rights organization. Reciprocity and mutuality are fundamental values and inherent goals of community-engaged partnerships. However, achieving reciprocal relationships demands an understanding of forms of power and differentials in power.
