Csi Literacy: The Forensic Application Of Basic Skills Testing, Ralf St. Clair
Csi Literacy: The Forensic Application Of Basic Skills Testing, Ralf St. Clair
Adult Education Research Conference
This presentation is a reflection on the application of literacy testing in a criminal case in the UK. A woman of retirement age was charged with fraud on the basis of a repeated false statement on a benefit form. The author was asked by defense lawyers to provide an expert opinion on whether the defendant’s claim to have misunderstood the question due to limited literacy skills was credible. The presentation reviews the procedures developed by the author to come to an informed opinion, and discusses some of the limits of literacy testing the process revealed.
Developing Engaged Scholars: The Graduate Advisor-Advisee Relationship, Lorilee R. Sandmann, Audrey J. Jaeger, Jihyun Kim
Developing Engaged Scholars: The Graduate Advisor-Advisee Relationship, Lorilee R. Sandmann, Audrey J. Jaeger, Jihyun Kim
Adult Education Research Conference
A critical dimension in the development of emerging engaged scholars is the advisor-advisee relationship. A multiyear, multiuniversity study of doctoral students interested in community-engaged scholarship and their advisors found that advisors influenced their advisees’ specific approach to community engagement; advisees built extensively on their own community-based experiences and even pushed their advisors in co-learning about communityengaged scholarship; and advisors and advisees shared recognition of lack of support for community engagement but pursued it anyway.

Critical Philosophical Concept Analysis A Search For Meaning Of The Concept Criticality In Adult Education, Bernadine W. Raiskums
Adult Education Research Conference
This study applied philosophical concept analysis as a qualitative research method to study meanings of the concept “criticality” in adult education. The research design combined elements of two previously applied approaches emphasizing comprehensive and rigorous analysis of the literature. Results of this study provide a clear conceptual foundation and working definition for the concept “criticality” that will serve as a heuristic for further research, theory building, and practice.

Facilitating Cross-Cultural Mentoring, Glenn A. Palmer, Dionne Rosser-Mims
Adult Education Research Conference
Researchers have recognized several factors that are formidable forces preventing African Americans and other minorities to achieve their fullest potentials in organizations (Thomas, 1989; Hackett & Byers 1996). Studies have revealed that African American women are more disadvantaged than African American men in the career development process (Cox & Blake 1991; Cox, 1993; Palmer, 2001). While racism remains a defiant career barrier for both, African American women must deal with the added layer of sexism. Experts and scholars believe that various barriers (discrimination, prejudice, structural variables, lack of mentoring, etc.) have prevented African Americans from achieving their full potentials in …

Multicultural/Multiethnic Education: A Critical Approach To The Educational Doctorate In Leadership, Carlos Nevarez, Lori Johnson Santamaria
Adult Education Research Conference
In the coming years, the community college will experience unprecedented turnover in its leadership, especially among its senior ranks (Shults, 2001; Weisman & Vaughan, 2001; 2006). Weisman & Vaughan (2006) note that 84 percent of community college Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) plan to retire by 2016. Primarily, the ‘impending’ leadership void is being created by educators who entered the community college in the 1960s and 1970s, and have served in these institutions for decades (Phillippe & Sullivan, 2005; Schults, 2001). On the verge of retirement, the presidential ranks are becoming progressively older. In 1996, the average age of a community …

Culturally Relevant Information Literacy, Rob Morrison
Culturally Relevant Information Literacy, Rob Morrison
Adult Education Research Conference
This paper is a qualitative case study of the role of culture in the information-seeking process. This study revealed that culture does affect how we locate, evaluate and value information and thus specific kinds of knowledge. Librarians and educators must engage in discussions on “Critical Information Literacy” where information is tied to knowledge creation that does not limit learners to a specific cultural worldview. Information and information-seeking processes cannot be separated from knowledge production.

Social Networking: Revitalizing Adult Education As A Field Of Social Practice, Joyce S. Mcknight
Adult Education Research Conference
For many years it has been my dream to discover ways to create and sustain online social networks using twenty-first century tools to provide the inspiration and on-going mutual support that twentieth century social activists and community educators found by physically journeying to Highlander. At the 2009 AERC I shared this idea with adult education colleagues in an interactive session in which we identified key characteristics of the Highlander experience including the development of supportive friendships, reflection on practice, creative strategies that could be adapted to particular settings, and the buoyancy of being part of a social movement. I went …

Interaction and interdependence between stakeholders results in emergence of the four Es of social value creation: Expertise development, Economic development, Engagement and Empowerment.
Immigration, Racial Profiling, And White Privilege: Community-Based Challenges And Practices For Adult Educators, Luis Kong
