Motivational Profiles And Their Associations With Achievement Outcomes, Bo Shen, Nate Mccaughtry, Jeffrey J. Martin, Mariane Fahlman
Motivational Profiles And Their Associations With Achievement Outcomes, Bo Shen, Nate Mccaughtry, Jeffrey J. Martin, Mariane Fahlman
Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies
With the belief that theoretical integration in motivation may help us better understand motivational behavior, we designed this study to explore adolescents’ motivational profiles and their associations with knowledge acquisition, leisure-time exercise behaviors, and cardiorespiratory fitness. Middle school students from a large urban inner-city school district (N = 603, ages 12–14) completed questionnaires assessing motivational constructs and leisure-time exercise behavior. Knowledge and cardiorespiratory fitness were also assessed with a knowledge test and the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run (PACER) test, respectively. Using hierarchical cluster analysis, we found that students’ motivation in physical education could be explained from a multi-theoretical …

Special Educators And Mathematics Phobia: An Initial Qualitative Investigation, Michael Humphrey, Jack J. Hourcade
Early and Special Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
Special educators are uniquely challenged to be content experts in all curricular areas, including mathematics, since students in their case loads may require academic instruction in any area. However, special educators with math phobia may be limited in their ability to provide effective instruction to their students with mathematical deficits and/or needs, and may experience additional challenges in their professional and personal lives. This qualitative study sought to better understand the nature of math phobia in two special educators through extensive interviews, journaling, and observations in math experiences, with a number of primary themes identified. Several potential resolutions for the …

When I was a kid, I always wished I was older. My friends and I would play games pretending we were ‘grown-ups.’ I was sure I would be an actress, living in a mansion in Malibu, with a wonderful husband—all because the game ‘M.A.S.H’ told me so. My mother used to say, “Trust me, Jen. When you’re older, you’ll wish you were young again.”
The games I played as a child were full of imagination and innocence. There were no dating games or addictions to games, and playing ‘make-believe’ did not automatically stereotype you as a nerd. It seems to …

Other resources
This paper will be in two parts; the first section will examine the current tertiary education situation in Ireland amid the global economic crisis and will review what should education’s contribution be to help alleviate the crisis. Through doing this both the state and the market, who have interests in the academy and their graduates produced, will become part of the review, as building stronger links with the academy and the economy to help raise skills, efficiency and productivity is becoming more important in ensuring global competitiveness and retaining equality and accessibility in the academy (see Gaffikin and Morrissey, 2003: …

The Relationship Of Self-Efficacy With Gpa, Attendance, And College Student Retention, Stephen P. Becker, Robert K. Gable
The Relationship Of Self-Efficacy With Gpa, Attendance, And College Student Retention, Stephen P. Becker, Robert K. Gable
Higher Education
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between self-efficacy or belief in one’s capability (Bandura 1977b, 1986, 1993, 1997) and first-term GPA, attendance, and retention using a modified version of the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE) (Schwarzer, 1992, 1993, 2005; Schwarzer & Jerusalem, 1993).
The study “College” is part of one of the world’s largest for-profit career education organizations. At the College, 100% of the students commute to classes and live in the metropolitan area. A large percentage of students live in difficult urban neighborhoods and grow up with low family income, abuse, gang violence, drugs, health problems, …
Meeting The Need For K-8 Teachers For Classrooms With Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students: The Promise And Challenge Of Early Field Experiences, Amy Strage, Susan Gomez, Kari Knutson-Miller, Ana Garcia-Nevarez
Faculty Publications
The writers present the findings of their study focused on teacher learning through early fieldwork experiences to address the problem of teachers working with a culturally and linguistically diverse student population. Data were analyzed from an archive collected from approximately 500 students enrolled in six undergraduate child development courses at three state university campuses located in urban areas of California. Findings suggest that early field experiences provide participants with opportunities for career goal clarification, and the context of field experience is significant and may lead to outcomes beyond the initial goal of the experience.

A Listening Pedagogy: Insights Of Pre-Service Elementary Teachers In Multi-Cultural Classrooms, Karen Paciotti, Margaret Bolick
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Although Texas schools are under the pedagogical constraints of both the Texas Assessment of Knowledge Skills (TAKS) and the national No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, it is morally incumbent upon Texas legislators and educators to listen to students’ voices to engage them with the “teaching and learning” technical core of schools (Hoy & Miskel, 2000, p. 75). Ironically, while Texas teacher certification standards mandate student-centered pedagogical practices, the current state and national pressure of a high-stakes accountability climate often lead to a teacher-centered pedagogy in which student voices are routinely excluded from the classroom (Kordalewski, 1999). This atmosphere …

Coaching Educational Leaders, Jothany Blackwood
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
As institutions of higher learning respond to the rapidly changing demographics of its administrators, they must continuously find processes that improve the performance and effectiveness of these individuals. They must also begin to understand how the integration of coaching and/or mentoring shapes educational leaders and their institutions. From developing administrator’s potential to work well with others and strengthen communication, coaching also access to mobility, career advancements, promotions and pay increases. Of interest is the presence of female administrators in the California community colleges and the role that coaching plays in their ability to be effective educational leaders.

Disparities In Tuition: A Study Of Tuitions Assessed By Hispanic Serving Community Colleges Versus Non-Hispanic Serving Community Colleges In Texas, Lee Waller, Louis Glover, Lynn Simpson
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
With the shift of higher education funding from federal and state to the local level, community colleges’ choices to off set this funding deficit become few and difficult. One regrettable choice that is frequently made is to increase tuition. This choice has largest finical impact on students of lower income with many of these students coming from minority backgrounds.

Eclecticism: The Main Stay Of Social Studies, S. Adewale
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
The genesis of eclecticism can be traced to the time of certain Greek thinkers who were generally grouped as eclectics. The name was later transferred to Leibniz and Cousin. All this was in the Second and First centuries B.C. Eclecticism, according to Chambers English Dictionary is “selecting or borrowing; choosing the best out of everything; broad, the opposite of exclusive”. The emphasis of Social Studies is getting the best out of other disciplines which will enhance the tack of Social Studies in understanding man and his environments which can be Social, economic, cultural, political, historical, religious, geographic, scientific and technological.

Framing Academic Leadership Positioning For The Global University, Kamaruzaman Jusoff
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
“Putting the right person at the right place at the right time” may be an old adage. However, for an organization to sustain on, the statement may remain significant and relevant. When deciding the leadership to play its role and to execute its function effectively and efficiently, this maxim remains a tag line to help make the organization, particularly educational institutions, to move towards the right track. Hence, the notion of leadership and its positioning in higher education arena refers not only to the strategic moves and tracks in meeting the unceasing demand for and a great diversification in this …
