Freshmen First Quarter Credit Load Assessment, Richard Bulcroft, Linda D. (Linda Darlene) Clark, Joseph E. Trimble
Office of Institutional Effectiveness
Focus group formed to obtain student perceptions of reasons for taking fewer than 15 credits during their first quarter, to explore potential solutions to low credit loads in the first year of college at Western and to ascertain the impacts of taking low vs. high credit loads.

Summerstart Advisors: Credit Load Assessment, Western Washington University. Office Of Survey Research
Office of Institutional Effectiveness
In Spring 2008 The Office of Survey Research informed former Summerstart Advisors that we had conducted focus groups with freshmen during Winter Quarter to find out why students are not registering for full course loads during their first quarter and first year at Western. As a part of this project, we sent Summerstart advisors a questionnaire which asked them to comment on students’ comments and to provide a context for understanding why not all students take a full 15 credit load in their first quarter. We asked advisors to provide detailed comments about why they think students perceive the process …

The Assessment Of Mathematics And Science Teacher Quality, Patricia S. Moyer-Packenham, Johnna J. Bolyard, Anastasia Kitsantas, Hana Oh
Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to examine the types of instruments being used to document mathematics and science teacher quality characteristics in 48 nationally funded mathematics and science education awards. Each of the 48 projects operationalized teacher quality and determined how to assess it. The main research questions examined the instruments awardees used to gather data on mathematics and science teacher quality, and the main characteristics of teachers examined by awardees. Results showed that awardees most frequently used surveys or questionnaires to assess characteristics of mathematics and science teacher quality. The most common teacher characteristics examined by awardees' included …

This paper explores the fate of 168 students who failed the Level 4 test at the American University Alumni (AUA) Language Center in Bangkok, Thailand. It examines enrollment trends of all Level 4 students during a one-year study period spanning 2006 and 2007, and reveals what happened to the students – who dropped out (and when), and who continued to study. It also examines why students might have dropped out. It then takes a critical look at certain aspects of the Level 4 test, explores what makes a test a “good” test, and recommends a series of improvements to AUA’s …
An Appraisal Of The Criticisms Of Educational Research In Recent Years, Sherwin Rodrigues
An Appraisal Of The Criticisms Of Educational Research In Recent Years, Sherwin Rodrigues
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
According to Hodkinson (2001) educational research in the UK has been passing through "a crisis of confidence" in the last decade as a result of several attacks upon its quality. The scope of this paper is to briefly highlight these „attacks‟ on educational research and then focus on one of its primary criticisms for an in-depth analysis. I mainly draw upon the work of Hargreaves (1996), Hammersley (1997) and Hillage, Pearson, Anderson and Tamkin (1998) but allude to other sources as well.
An Examination Of Principal Leadership Practices And School-Level Variables In Connecticut Schools With Achievement Gains Above And Below The State's Average Performance Gain On State Assessments, David R. Cormier
Dissertations
Problem
Effective-schools research has demonstrated that a building level administrator’s leadership practices contribute to the success or failure of change efforts and impact school culture and student achievement. Research in this area has focused primarily on comparing high and low performing schools and the various antecedent/context variables of such schools. This study examined schools with annual achievement gains above and below the state’s average gain in student performance and sought to determine if there were significant differences in school antecedent/context variables, leadership practices, and mediating variables between these schools.
Method
Research participants represented a sample of Connecticut elementary schools with …

In response to the need for faculty training, the American Society of Civil Engineers developed and funded the ExCEEd (Excellence in Civil Engineering Education) Teaching Workshop that is today - the summer of 2008 - celebrating its tenth year of existence. For the past decade, nineteen ExCEEd Teaching Workshops (ETW) have been held at the United States Military Academy, the University of Arkansas, and Northern Arizona University, with two more workshops scheduled for this summer for a total of 21 offerings. ETW has realized 449 graduates from 203 different U.S. and international colleges and universities. This paper summarizes the content …

This paper uses control charts and trend lines to suggest that Indiana teachers may be doing a better job educating Indiana students than policy makers think.
