Fostering The Development Of Vocabulary Knowledge And Reading Comprehension Though Contextually-Based Multiple Meaning Vocabulary Instruction, J. Ron Nelson, Scott A. Stage

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

The primary purpose of this study was to assess the effects of contextually-based multiple meaning (i.e., words with multiple meanings) vocabulary instruction on the vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension of students. Third and 5th grade students received either contextually-based multiple meaning vocabulary instruction embedded in the standard language arts instruction offered to all students over a three-month period or the standard language arts instruction alone (i.e., non-specific treatment). Students who received the contextually-based multiple meaning instruction generally showed statistically and educationally significant gains in their vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension relative to students who did not. Developing Critical Thinking Skills In The Intermediate Accounting Class: Using Simulations With Rubrics, Karen Cascini, Anne Rich

WCBT Faculty Publications

A challenge of paramount importance facing college professors today is the development of students’ capacity for critical thinking skills. While this has long been an area of focused activity for educators, since the early 1980s in particular, it has become clear that critical thinking skills are essential to the ability of our students to compete globally. As teachers and professors at all levels have begun to focus greater attention on ways to develop critical thinking skills, we see the same trend reflected within the accounting profession. Research by Kealy (2005), Bonk (1998), Wolcott (1997), Kimmel (1995), and Doney (1993) demonstrates …

Marvin S. Pittman: A Historical Inquiry Of His Life, Legacy And Leadership, Pamela Frost Altman Jan 2007

Marvin S. Pittman: A Historical Inquiry Of His Life, Legacy And Leadership, Pamela Frost Altman

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation is an inquiry into the educational leadership style of Marvin Summers Pittman, April 12, 1882-February 27, 1954. Pittman was a transformational leader with a vision to set goals that sometimes appeared to be outside the box during his time as an educational leader. Pittman introduced new and innovative programs in education, including his zone plan for teacher training, and theories for the consolidation of schools. Pittman understood that education was the tool needed to give power back to the people, and to enable them to be productive citizens. Education was Pittman's tool to bring the poor farm boy …

The Case For Including Study Of Arts In Management Development Curricula, Humayun S. Ansari Jan 2007

The Case For Including Study Of Arts In Management Development Curricula, Humayun S. Ansari

Business Review

Proliferation of business schools and institutes providing business education have resulted in the creation of a vast pool of trained manpower which has little avenues to explore for getting gainful employment. Therefore, we have to discover new avenues, which do not require direct foreign investment for creating employment and adding value to our indigenous intellectual property owners. The thesis of this paper is that the induction of the study of fine arts in business education curricula can help forge a common ground between the two cultures (Arts and Business) and to develop projects that are cooperative and mutually beneficial. This …

This intensive single-site case study has taken the entering cohort of Year 11 students in the year 2000 and has used: Point-of-entry and post-experience interviews of students admitted to the course, Parallel entry and on-course surveys, On-course administration of the well-credentialed Adolescent Coping Scale (Frydenberg and Lewis, 1993), and Staff interviews to identify and describe the environmental, personal and contextual factors that are associated with a student’s completion/non-completion of the two year Course and thereby help the College Administration address the on-going unacceptably high numbers of students not completing the Course. Academic Advising: Differences Between Freshmen And Sophomores, Abby L. Cochren Jan 2007

Academic Advising: Differences Between Freshmen And Sophomores, Abby L. Cochren

Honors Program Theses

Freshman and sophomore years in college are a transitional period in a student's academic life, both externally and internally. Initially, one sees more external transitions such as . going from high school to colle.ge and going to class fifteen hours a week. However, alongside those external transitions, and eventually superseding them, the internal transitions begin to strongly influence the student's life: defining their identity; determining the best academic route; and questioning former beliefs about their interests and future. These internal transitions start a four-year journey of shifting needs and outlook. This journey determines how the student develops, what kind of …
