A Study Of Attrition In A Respiratory Care Associate Degree Program In A Northeast Tennessee Community College., Donna D. Lilly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Walters State Community College's Respiratory Care (WSCC RC) Program had a 33% attrition rate during a five-year period from 1999 through 2003. This study analyzed demographic, pre-admission, and academic variables to identify reasons for attrition within the WSCC RC program. The population size was 90 students; this was the entire population of five consecutive classes graduating during a five-year period from 1999 through 2003. The criterion variables included high school attended, gender, age, college-level GPA, college-level credit hours, and developmental requirements.

Statistical tests revealed that college-level GPA, college-level credit hours, and developmental requirements influenced persistence within the population. The …

Teachers As Advocates For Student: Why Some Choose To Go The Extra Mile, Linda Cohen Aug 2005

Teachers As Advocates For Student: Why Some Choose To Go The Extra Mile, Linda Cohen

Theses and Graduate Projects

Teachers have the opportunity to become leaders who shape, alter and foster their students' social and academic life. The student population of late has emerged as diverse in culture, needs and learning ability. It has become increasingly more important for a teacher to understand the student as "a whole," since it often pertains to the student's learning capability and growth as a person. Identifying the factors that encourage student advocacy could be a huge step in continuing progress or a positive change toward establishing advocacy environments. This qualitative action research study investigates the factors that formulate a teacher as an …

Freshmen Interest Group (Fig) Report, James Inverarity, Kathleen Kennedy, Jeff Newcomer, Lorrie Brilla, Lauren Balisky

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

SUMMARY Over the past six years the Freshman Interest Group (FIG) has attracted a number of participants who find sufficient intrinsic value in the program to invest considerable time and talent in sustaining and improving the program. At the same time, many faculty have voiced concerns over the content of some offerings and the general lack of faculty oversight in its development. Initially FIGs was established to address a perceived imbalance of resources between the upper and lower division program that had a negative effect on the experience and engagement of entering students. On several other campuses FIGs was heralded …

Looking Back Without Anger: Reflections On The Boston School Crisis, Robert Wood Mar 2005

Looking Back Without Anger: Reflections On The Boston School Crisis, Robert Wood

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article is taken from the unpublished autobiography of Robert Wood who served as Superintendent of Boston Public Schools from 1978 to 1980 during the difficult period when U.S. District Court Judge W. Arthur Garrity was overseeing court ordered desegregation of schools. After leaving the University of Massachusetts in January 1978, Robert Wood spent six months at the Harvard Graduate School of Education working on a book and considering a possible run for the United States Senate. Suggestion as to his next assignment, however, came from an unexpected source, as he describes below.

Toward Art-Making As Liberatory Pedagogy And Practice: Artists And Students In An Anti-Bullying School Reform Initiative, Sharon Verner Chappell

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

I sit at my desk for the last thirty minutes before driving to school where I will teach a painting lesson on abstract art. I am an after school visual arts intervention teacher who travels among ten K-6 urban schools in the Bay Area of California. When I am not on campus, I am working at the district office coordinating visiting artist programs and developing integrated arts curriculum. Yet each day, I notice an increasing disconnect between my duties as a teacher and my own arts practice. My painting, collage, and drawing lessons look just like the ones in the …
