Distress Under Duress: The Relationship Between Campus Climate And Depression In Asian American College Students, Christine M. Cress, Elaine Kimiko Ikeda Jan 2003

Distress Under Duress: The Relationship Between Campus Climate And Depression In Asian American College Students, Christine M. Cress, Elaine Kimiko Ikeda

Educational Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Student perceptions of negative campus climate were predictive of Asian American students’ depression levels in spite of students’ entering proclivities toward depression and in spite of varying institutional types. In addition, these findings were consistent whether individual Asian American perceptions of campus climate were entered into the equation or whether institutional levels of campus perceptions (which included all racial and ethnic groups) were entered into the equation. Therefore, higher education institutions that are perceived by students to discriminate against individuals based on race or ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or disability may put their Asian American students at risk for severe …

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

People with developmental disabilities often display deficiencies in self-management and social skills in community based settings. Difficulties with self-management and social skills tend to pose particular difficulties for performing valued adult roles. Tools from behavior therapy have the potential to assist rehabilitation counselors in their work with consumers with developmental disabilities to overcome the negative impacts of functional limitations on expressing behaviors needed for success in community-based settings. This article presents a review of the behavior therapy literature regarding self-management and social skills training techniques rehabilitation counselors can use in their work with consumers with developmental disabilities in areas including …

Implications Of Face-To-Face And Web-Based Asynchronous Staff Development Approaches, John D. Solis Jan 2003

Implications Of Face-To-Face And Web-Based Asynchronous Staff Development Approaches, John D. Solis

Graduate Research Papers

As more institutions of higher education invest in technology, an increased number of educators have to keep up with those technologies. Technology opens new opportunities to teach and to learn. However, if technology is to be used to support learning, educators must first be comfortable using technology. In order for educators to become comfortable and to effectively use technology in their own teaching, staff development opportunities must be set in place. Staff development programs need to be relevant to the specific needs of educators of higher education. Because technology is rapidly changing, it is impossible for educators to know all …

Following The Students' Lead: Exploring The Value Of Incentives, Greta Davis Jan 2003

Following The Students' Lead: Exploring The Value Of Incentives, Greta Davis

Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research

Recently, I decided to focus on how children perceive the learning activities I give them. I believed this would not only help improve my students' metacognitive skills by encouraging them to identify what strategies best helped them to learn but it would also help my practice by understanding how my goals for activities might differ from their goals. I shared this interest with the students at the beginning of the year and asked for their assistance in exploring these issues. I planned to use a means of data collection that my DICEP colleagues had proposed. It involved pausing or "freezing" …

Reflection In Teacher Education: It Starts With Me!, Clare Kosnik

Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research

In the Mid-Town teacher education program at OISE/UT our broad goals for ourselves and our students are inquiry, integration and community. However, student teachers often enter the program believing they will be systematically taught how to teach mathematics, language arts, science, and so on; acquire fool-proof strategies for classroom management; and be given the names of prescribed curriculum textbooks (Britzman, 1986). As Louisa, a student teacher in this study noted, "I thought teacher education would be sitting in front of a lot of instructors, and you don't have anything to say, because you're going to be told everything that you …

Co-Researching The Researchers: Dicep's Ongoing Self-Reflection, Monica Mcglynn-Stewart

Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research

The self-appointed chronicler of DICEP strikes again! In 1997 I prepared, distributed and analyzed an anonymously completed survey of our collaborative action research group (McGlynn-Stewart, 1998). I felt that there were a lot of issues that needed to be discussed regarding how we functioned as a group, and I wanted to provide a forum for that to happen. In 1999, I facilitated an interactive email conversation among our members for an update on how we were doing with respect to the issues that arose in the earlier survey (McGlynn-Stewart, 2001).

The Use And Productivity Of Verb Morphology In Specific Language Impairment: An Examination Of Swedish, Kristina Hansson, Laurence B. Leonard Jan 2003

The Use And Productivity Of Verb Morphology In Specific Language Impairment: An Examination Of Swedish, Kristina Hansson, Laurence B. Leonard

Purdue Center for Early Learning Faculty and Staff Publications

In an earlier study, we found that Swedish-speaking children with specificlanguage impairment (SLI) differ from younger normally developing com-patriots on only a subset of verb morphemes characteristically problematicfor children with this type of disorder. In the present study, this finding wasreplicated, using a carefully devised set of tasks to elicit attempts at thetarget morphemes. The children with SLI used present copula forms andregular past-tense inflections with lower percentages than both younger andsame-age control children. However, the children with SLI were as proficientas the younger controls in the use of present-tense inflections and irregularpast forms. Given the pattern of the children’s …

A Vision To Lead Elementary School : A Reflective Research Paper, Chad D. Hageman Jan 2003

A Vision To Lead Elementary School : A Reflective Research Paper, Chad D. Hageman

Graduate Research Papers

Leadership is a characteristic in which I believe strongly. I would rather initiate an idea than just be a follower of one. I have shown this with my current role as a teacher, and feel that I can make a smooth transition into the position of administrator. I have identified personal characteristics that I believe will make me an effective leader. Through my experiences and my character I will be able to lead an elementary school effectively and efficiently. I will lead and instruct the teachers into a direction of great achievement. Together we will create a safe and fun …

A Philosophical Explanation Of Education Today : A Reflective Essay, Brant J. Bemus Jan 2003

A Philosophical Explanation Of Education Today : A Reflective Essay, Brant J. Bemus

Graduate Research Papers

"In one sense it is not so much the capacity for education as the necessity of education that differentiates man from the lower animals" (p. 8). This quote by Bagley (1905) summarizes his beliefs on what the foundation of education is built. Despite many changes in education since Bagley's time, the purpose of education remains constant - to provide the best opportunities for students to achieve their highest attainment and become well-rounded individuals in an ever changing society. It is the necessity of education that makes the duty of public and private education so crucial. It is our job, as …

Bridging The Gap : The Role Of Student Development In Preparing Students For The Job Market, Matthew D. Nuese Jan 2003

Bridging The Gap : The Role Of Student Development In Preparing Students For The Job Market, Matthew D. Nuese

Graduate Research Papers

Student development is an amazing progression, but many students are ill-prepared when they enter post-graduate life, particularly in the realm of their career, where the industry of business has a mission that is clearly dualistic. The transition for recent graduates often creates feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt because the campus culture is significantly different from that of corporate America. Businesses want students who are able to fill into positions quickly and easily: this means people who can think critically, work well with teams, and have defined self-vision. Corporate America typically values the same ideals of student development, but somewhere between …

The Men And Women Of Gettysburg College: Class Of 1903, Daryl Grenz

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

On Thursday September 7, 1899 a new school year (its sixty-eighth) began at Pennsylvania College in Gettysburg.1 Many students had arrived as early as that Sunday to begin settling into their rooms. Many of the forty-three new students2 had been accepted the previous June by passing a series of entrance exams in all of the applicable subject areas, especially the Classics. A number of others had waited and taken the exams as the school year started. Eighteen individuals were exempt from entrance exams because of their satisfactory work during the previous year at the attached preparatory school in Stevens Hall. …

Factors Influencing Grade Six Students' Perceptions Of Teachers, Susan Smith Laplante Jan 2003

Factors Influencing Grade Six Students' Perceptions Of Teachers, Susan Smith Laplante

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Less than one percent of U.S. school districts have invited student feedback in the school improvement process (Matthews, 2000). Students have valuable perceptions of how teachers interact with them and these perceptions can be a usefbl tool to improve schools (Tyack & Cuban). The purpose of this study was to examine sixth grade students' perceptions of teachers and the relationship of these perceptions to achievement, gender, socioeconomic status and grade configurations. This study utilized sixth graders' responses to sixteen items selected fiom the Students Speak: My Education and My Future Aspirations survey developed at the National Center for Student Aspirations …
