Technology Attitudes In The Classroom, Sherry A. Fleming

The Corinthian

The purpose of this study was to examine student attitudes toward technology in the economics classroom in a magnet high school in Augusta, Georgia over a period of a semester. A survey was used to measure attitudes towards computer use, any changes at the end of the semester, and any differences by gender. Structured observations were notated in a teacher log once a week to note any differences in aggressiveness towards computer use by gender. The results indicate that although males scored higher on attitude surveys, there were no significant differences between gender.

(2002) Philosophy For Children In China: A Late Preliminary Anti-Report, David K. Kennedy, Walter Omar Kohan Jan 2002

(2002) Philosophy For Children In China: A Late Preliminary Anti-Report, David K. Kennedy, Walter Omar Kohan

Collected Papers of David Kennedy

We were part of a group of five academics visiting China in July 2000, in order to conduct two workshops in Philosophy for Children in two widely disparate cities - Kunming, in the ethnically diverse, far-from-Beijing southeastern province of Yunnan; and Shanghai, long known as the city where East meets West. Although we could not even read street signs, much less speak at all except through the kindness of interpreters, yet we sensed that Kunming and Shanghai were two different realities of contemporary China. The workshop in Kunming was conducted at the Southern Railway School, where P4C is being spearheaded …

Integrating Science In Agricultural Education: Attitudes Of Indiana Agricultural Science And Business Teachers, Mark Balschweid, Gregory W. Thompson

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to determine how Indiana Agricultural Science and Business (ASB) teachers perceived the impact of integrating science on agricultural education programs. The population consisted of all Indiana ASB teachers employed during the fall 1999 semester (N = 243). The Integrating Science Survey Instrument developed by Thompson (1996) was used to identify the perceptions of the ASB instructors. From the data it was concluded that many of Indiana’s Agricultural Science and Business instructors have responded positively to the call for the integration of science into the agricultural education curriculum. As a result of their efforts, over …

Writing In The Contact Zone: Three Portraits Of Reflexivity And Transformation, Laurene L. Christensen Jan 2002

Writing In The Contact Zone: Three Portraits Of Reflexivity And Transformation, Laurene L. Christensen

Dissertations and Theses

Culture is at the core of language teaching. Because classrooms are contact zones (Pratt 1991), teachers must have a well-developed sense of their own intercultural competence so that they may better facilitate the cross-cultural discovery inherent in language teaching. Teacher preparation programs need to provide opportunities for new teachers to increase their intercultural awareness. The purpose of this research was to qualitatively understand the experiences of pre-service teachers in a required culture-learning class at a large urban university. Specifically, the focus of this study was the completion of a mini-ethnography project designed to give the students a cross-cultural exchange. Since …

Preservice Teachers' Perceptions Of Service-Learning, Kim Flottemesch, Tuula Heide, Melvin Pedras Jan 2002

Preservice Teachers' Perceptions Of Service-Learning, Kim Flottemesch, Tuula Heide, Melvin Pedras

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

The study explored preservice teachers' experiences and perceptions of implementation of service-learning into the teacher preparation progrcun and its use as a teaching methodology in their own teaching. Through quantitative data generated from a survey instrument, the concept of a service-learning as a viable teaching method was well received. After an initial introduction to the concept of service-learning methhodology, a moderate percentage of preservice teachers stated they would likely use it in their own teaching. Data suggests no systematic relationship between certainty of teaching as a career choice and perceptions of service-learning. However, the data does suggest significant differences in …

Oh, What A Tangled Web-Site We Weave When First We Practice, Elizabeth Reynolds, James Reynolds Jan 2002

Oh, What A Tangled Web-Site We Weave When First We Practice, Elizabeth Reynolds, James Reynolds

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

Current emphases on computer technology have prompted a naive desire to use whatever is new regardless of its appropriateness to educational outcomes. Use of College level Web-based instruction has unearthed a variety of problems: misapplication of software, misplaced attempts to adapt traditional instruction to the Web, lack of teacher support, access and time difficulties, financial barriers, spatial/gender differences, and counterproductive approaches to learning that are unsystematic and independent versus organized, social, and cultural. The present study examined technological barriers to college student's achievement as well as student preferences regarding an optional Web-based ancillary designed to promote student achievement in an …

Student Teachers' Perception Of Their Exposure To Special Population, Henry S. Williams, Osman Alawiye, Don Woodcock Jan 2002

Student Teachers' Perception Of Their Exposure To Special Population, Henry S. Williams, Osman Alawiye, Don Woodcock

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

The preparation of pre-service teachers to be culturally responsive is becoming more critical as America's minority student population continues to rapidly increase. It is generally acknowledged that the public school classroom is the place where pre-service teachers experience and acquire culturally responsive behaviors such as interdependency with in-service teachers and students, parents, administrators and stake holding associations. The most critical among these is the experience the pre-service candidates receive with culturally diverse students. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which a Pacific Northwest undergraduate teacher preparation program provided its pre-service candidates work opportunities with …

Summarizing Concepts About Teacher Education, Learning And Neuroscience, Terry Armstrong, Teresa J. Kennedy, Porter Coggins Jan 2002

Summarizing Concepts About Teacher Education, Learning And Neuroscience, Terry Armstrong, Teresa J. Kennedy, Porter Coggins

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

Despite on-going reform. teacher education today is virtually unchanged from models used in the 1920s. The achievements of the past century however have been remarkable in every way. Neuroscience records and the human genome project hold the prospect of truly expanded conceptualizations for teacher educators. This article summarizes concepts relating to the human cerebrum that speak to individual uniqueness derived from neuroscience research of the past several decades. Five areas of investigation are noted that could provide the theoretical underpinning for teacher education collaboration with neuroscientists. Neuroscience theorists are identified in anticipation that their work may provide insights to teacher …

A Physical Activity Intervention Program, Jackie Ní Mhuircheartaigh Jan 2002

A Physical Activity Intervention Program, Jackie Ní Mhuircheartaigh

Theses

Physical activity levels decline dramatically during adolescence, particularly among adolescent girls. Data is lacking on ways to tailor physical activity interventions to the needs and interests of young girls to prevent this rapid decline. This study aimed to design and implement a physical activity intervention program aimed at promoting increased participation in physical activity among adolescent girls.

Forty-five transition year female students (mean age 15.65yrs) from two girls secondary schools participated in this study. Schools were assigned to intervention and control conditions. All students participated in focus groups, two questionnaires were utilised in the study and a random sample of …

ABOUT THE TEST REPORT AND USE OF THE DATA

The test data contained in this report are a tabulation of the results of a series of tests. Due to the restricted format of these pages, only a limited amount of data and not all of the tractor specifications are included. The full OECD report contains usually about 30 pages of data and specifications. The test data were obtained for each tractor under similar conditions and therefore, provide a means of comparison of performance based on a limited set of reported data.
