A Comparative Study Of The Morale Levels Of Lower And Upper Elementary Public School Teachers, Marcellina Hummer Anderson
A Comparative Study Of The Morale Levels Of Lower And Upper Elementary Public School Teachers, Marcellina Hummer Anderson
Student Work
This study involved the development of a new instrument, the Teacher Outlook and Perceptions Survey, to explore the nature of teacher morale, what predicts teacher morale, and the influence of the anticipated outlook of the job situation on teacher morale. The instrument consisted of 47 items, including a global item in which teachers assessed their morale levels. The scores of the instrument produced an alpha reliability coefficient of .91. Elementary teachers from a large urban district participated in the study (N = 308). The instrument was based on a morale model developed by the researcher. Morale was defined as a …

Learning Communities: A Selective Overview Of Academic Library Involvement, Jean-Paul Orgeron
Learning Communities: A Selective Overview Of Academic Library Involvement, Jean-Paul Orgeron
E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)
In 1932, Alexander Meiklejohn published a book that addressed the implementation of learning communities at the University of Wisconsin in 1927. The book, The Experimental College, serves as proof of the existence of such communities well over sixty years ago. It is clear that in the mid to late 1990s learning communities have piqued the curiosities of students and teaching faculty alike. Though they go by different names at various colleges and universities, and have somewhat different components, the common idea of learning communities is to have from two to four courses linked so that the courses have the same …

A Test Of Three Sociological Explanations Of High School Completion, Edward B. Reeves, Edward F. Breschel
A Test Of Three Sociological Explanations Of High School Completion, Edward B. Reeves, Edward F. Breschel
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Data from the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988-1994 are analyzed with logistic regression to test three sociological explanations of high school completion. The first explanation, derived from meritocracy theory, holds that educational credentials are won by academically deserving students. Thus, students who demonstrate better cognitive skills and make better grades are more likely to receive a high school diploma. The second explanation, derived from social reproduction theory, hypothesizes that high school graduation depends on the resources within the student’s family, such as family income and parent’s education level. Students from more advantaged families are more likely to graduate. The …

An Examination Of Multi-Institutional Networks, Nancy L. Thomas
New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications
The purpose of this paper is to identify techniques for designing and maintaining effective multi-institutional collaborative projects that will also encourage the success of each individual institution. It contains recommendations regarding the formation and management of the networks. First, it reviews project goals and desired outcomes, with consideration of whether collaboration should be a means or an end. Next, the paper turns to strategies for forming and managing networks, with particular attention to the selection and role of a “project leader.” It then considers the role and responsibility of institutional participants, reviewing criteria for network participation and arguing in favor …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
In this article the authors describe Reading Express, a collaborative program which brings together the expertise of first-grade teachers and Reading Recovery teachers to support all first-grade children in literacy development. In the Reading Express program, the Reading Recovery teachers spend one hour per day in each of the first grade classrooms. This time is spent in both whole class as well as small group instruction. The results of Reading Express have been positive for both first-grade children as well as teachers. End-of-year text-level scores and other data indicate that the program is having a positive impact on students' literacy …

Applications Of Cloze Procedure To Reading Assessment In Special Circumstances Of Literacy Development, Norbert Francis
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This study forms part of an on-going investigation of second language reading development of elementary school children from a bilingual, indigenous, community where high levels of proficiency in both languages are common among all age groups. Modifications were applied to the standard rational deletion cloze procedure to adapt assessment to the special sociolinguistic circumstances of reading in an indigenous language, and for the purpose of exploring practical classroom applications of the cloze procedure for instruction.
