A Comparative Study Of The Morale Levels Of Lower And Upper Elementary Public School Teachers, Marcellina Hummer Anderson

Student Work

This study involved the development of a new instrument, the Teacher Outlook and Perceptions Survey, to explore the nature of teacher morale, what predicts teacher morale, and the influence of the anticipated outlook of the job situation on teacher morale. The instrument consisted of 47 items, including a global item in which teachers assessed their morale levels. The scores of the instrument produced an alpha reliability coefficient of .91. Elementary teachers from a large urban district participated in the study (N = 308). The instrument was based on a morale model developed by the researcher. Morale was defined as a …

Learning Communities: A Selective Overview Of Academic Library Involvement, Jean-Paul Orgeron Oct 1999

Learning Communities: A Selective Overview Of Academic Library Involvement, Jean-Paul Orgeron

E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)

In 1932, Alexander Meiklejohn published a book that addressed the implementation of learning communities at the University of Wisconsin in 1927. The book, The Experimental College, serves as proof of the existence of such communities well over sixty years ago. It is clear that in the mid to late 1990s learning communities have piqued the curiosities of students and teaching faculty alike. Though they go by different names at various colleges and universities, and have somewhat different components, the common idea of learning communities is to have from two to four courses linked so that the courses have the same …

A Test Of Three Sociological Explanations Of High School Completion, Edward B. Reeves, Edward F. Breschel Oct 1999

A Test Of Three Sociological Explanations Of High School Completion, Edward B. Reeves, Edward F. Breschel

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Data from the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988-1994 are analyzed with logistic regression to test three sociological explanations of high school completion. The first explanation, derived from meritocracy theory, holds that educational credentials are won by academically deserving students. Thus, students who demonstrate better cognitive skills and make better grades are more likely to receive a high school diploma. The second explanation, derived from social reproduction theory, hypothesizes that high school graduation depends on the resources within the student’s family, such as family income and parent’s education level. Students from more advantaged families are more likely to graduate. The …
