Factors Related To School Involvement By Parents Of Students With Learning Disabilities, Kristen White
Theses & Honors Papers
The purpose of this study was to determine the factors related to a parent's involvement in their child's education. More specifically it addressed the factors related to the involvement by parents of children with learning disabilities. The subjects (n=52) were all parents of children with learning disabilities. All parents attending a convention sponsored by the Learning Disabilities Association of North Carolina were surveyed. A self-developed questionnaire was used for this research. 37% of the questionnaires were returned. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a Pearson r. A significant correlation was found between teacher involvement and parental involvement (r= …

Metacognitive Theories, Gregory Schraw, David Moshman
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
This paper proposes a framework for understanding people’s theories about their own cognition. Metacognitive theories are defined broadly as systematic frameworks used to explain and direct cognition, metacognitive knowledge, and regulatory skills. We distinguish tacit, informal, and formal metacognitive theories and discuss critical differences among them using criteria borrowed from the developmental literature. We also consider the origin and development of these theories, as well as implications for educational research and practice.

The Analysis Of Methods Of Instruction In College Algebra And Trigonometry Courses In The Langston University Department Of Mathematics, Cristie L. Bostic
McCabe Thesis Collection
In 1978, a recurring effort was made to remedy the constant decline of test scores in the area of mathematics around the country (Milhalko, 1978). At this time educational methods of "back-to-basics" and "competency-based" programs were seen as the solutions to the drastic decline in test scores and the decrease in interest among students in mathematics courses. Seventeen years later, teachers of mathematics in both the secondary schools and universities (entry level courses) are confronted daily with students who possess a fear of mathematics, students who are unwilling, uninterested, and unable to learn the concepts in mathematics, and students who …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
As a teacher educator in reading, I am interested in how well classroom practices which preservice students observe during fieldwork coincide with what they learn in my courses. Through discussions with my students, as well as my own classroom observations, it appears that there is not always a fit between current theory and the actual classroom practice. For example, round robin reading, the practice of one student at a time reading a portion of text aloud while other students listen, became the center of a class discussion recently.

Teacher-Mediated Learning For Young Readers: Successful Strategies With Predictable Book Reading, Janice Porterfield Stewart
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Young children's emergent literacy development can be enhanced by storybook reading, discussing the books, paying attention to the print and illustrations, and by involving parents (Heath, 1983; Snow and Ninio, 1986; Mason, Peterman,Dunning, and Stewart, 1992; Keer and Mason, 1993). Often children from high risk backgrounds have limited experiences handling books, being read to, asking questions and at tending to visual stimuli found in books. Consequently, in the beginning of kindergarten many children are not reading and some do not know the letters of the alphabet. However, predictable books provide interactions with prints and pictures which can be a powerful …

Several Bellingham residents and Western students were among 30,000 delegates who traveled to China this summer for a parallel forum in Huairou. As the feature by David Lynch on page 26 discovers, the forum served as an energy booster and supportive venture. And although the conference ended two months ago, these women remain enthusiastic. They’ve continued the struggle for change. Here is a look at the outcome — the fledgling results. This is what Lynch, who lived in China for six years, tried to focus on.
A global networking took place in China, with women exchanging ad dresses and phone …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Whole language instruction and an emphasis on the writing process have had a significant impact on the teaching of writing. Many whole language teachers are already in practice, and more educators are moving toward this kind of teaching. However, comparative research on the value of whole language curriculum is limited. It is important to study children's interpretations (Erickson and Shultz, 1992) as they are reflected in the written products they generate in different kinds of classrooms. We need to know more about the sense children make of their instruction, what they are learning about written language, and the kinds of …
