Educating Educators In The Selection, Design, And Utilization Of Educational Media, Sara B. Baumhover Jan 1991

Educating Educators In The Selection, Design, And Utilization Of Educational Media, Sara B. Baumhover

Graduate Research Papers

Today, as in the past, there are various factors affecting education and calling for changes. Firstly, there is a constant influx of technology and materials into educational and training systems. Secondly, the characteristics and needs of learners are changing. Finally, the problems affecting both learners and educators are increasing. Rather than passively accepting change, Ways (1964) has suggested that humans become active participants. For educators, this means altering instructional strategies to incorporate new mediums (Romizowsky, 1988). Educators need to have a voice and exercise control over the way in which messages are presented. In order to do so, educators need …

The Effects Of Sustained Silent Reading On The Reading Attitude Of Primary Students, Dena Marie Higginbotham

Graduate Research Papers

The effect of sustained silent reading on the reading attitude of primary grade school students was investigated. Data were compiled for 87 primary grade students and their eight teachers. The Elementary Heading Attitude Survey by McKenna & Kear (1990) showed no significant difference in students' reading attitude after beginning a sustained silent reading program. Parent Surveys indicated students increased the amount of time spent reading outside of school by over 25%. A relation between teachers' opinions and students' opinions about sustained silent reading was not established due to the small size of the teacher group. Results of the Teacher Questionnaire …

Reading Comprehension: Strategies For Intermediate Whole Language Teachers, Elaine Madsen Jan 1991

Reading Comprehension: Strategies For Intermediate Whole Language Teachers, Elaine Madsen

Graduate Research Papers

The term "whole language" appears in journal articles, in textbook ads, in workshops, and in school district adoptions. Many teachers are being required to apply whole language approaches in their classroom. The Council Bluffs Community School District, for example, recently adopted a whole language approach to teaching language arts K-6. The intermediate educators in this district want to know more about whole language and are concerned about the effect of using a whole language approach on the ability of the reader to comprehend what ls read.

The Whole Language Approach To Reading Instruction: Strategies That Enhance Comprehension, Frances J. Pleak

Graduate Research Papers

The report of the National Commission on Excellence in Education,~ Nation at Risk (1983) focused the nation's attention on problems in our educational system. One of the reactions from the publication was a concern to improve literacy in the United States by improving current practices in reading instruction. Becoming~ Nation of Readers, a widely publicized report issued in 1985 by the Commission on Reading, was an outcome of this concern about current reading practices. An important finding of this two year study was that much is already known about how children learn to read, but this knowledge is not being …

Classroom Implementation Of Cooperative Learning: Qualitative Case Studies Of Three Early Elementary Teachers, W. Philip Bassett Jan 1991

Classroom Implementation Of Cooperative Learning: Qualitative Case Studies Of Three Early Elementary Teachers, W. Philip Bassett

Dissertations

This study uses qualitative methodology to look at the implementation of cooperative learning in three early elementary classrooms. The questions of interest were "What, from a teacher's point of view, happens when cooperative learning methods are implemented?" and "What happens to a cooperative learning model when it is implemented by trained teachers?"

A review of the literature related to cooperative learning identifies three genres of cooperative learning and proposes a theoretical framework. A review of the literature related to qualitative research defines qualitative research in terms of philosophy, perspectives, applications to educational research, and data gathering and analysis techniques. A …

The Empirical Development Of An Instructional Product For The Training Of Seventh-Day Adventist Literature Evangelists, Randy C. Horning

Dissertations

Problem. This study addressed the training needs of SDA literature evangelists through an empirically developed curriculum.

Method. The instructional product development method of Baker and Schutz (1971) served as the basis for this research. After the need for the product was established, a series of behavioral objectives was written. The criteria for evaluation of the behavioral objectives were obtained from current sales literature as it applied to the work of literature evangelists. Additionally, a study of training literature was reviewed for methods to increase the effectiveness of the training seminar. The curriculum was presented in the form of a …

A Study Of Issues And Problems Women Face In Attempting To Pursue Careers In Educational Administration In Kenya, Bertha Kirigo Mutai Jan 1991

A Study Of Issues And Problems Women Face In Attempting To Pursue Careers In Educational Administration In Kenya, Bertha Kirigo Mutai

Dissertations

Problem

In Kenya, the majority of women in education occupy classroom teaching positions. Educational officers, in their hiring practices, appear to overlook women as resources, thereby depriving the schools of the skills and talents of potentially capable leaders. Students are also denied the role models of female leaders. This study investigates how difficult it is for women to secure professional careers in educational administration in Kenya.

Method

The population consisted of all the female teachers employed by the Ministry of Education in Kenya, and female Kenyan students in North American universities. A questionnaire was used to collect data from the …

Teacher Change And A Direct Instruction Reading Approach : A Multiple-Case Study, Shirley Ann Freed Jan 1991

Teacher Change And A Direct Instruction Reading Approach : A Multiple-Case Study, Shirley Ann Freed

Dissertations

Problem. Using a qualitative research design this study documented the process of change experienced by four elementary teachers as they learned a direct instruction reading approach. The literature reveals that teacher implementation is affected by psychological state, school climate, and conceptual level; however, the goal of this study was to examine the effects of cognition and working conditions.

Method. The author was involved as a participant-observer with 20 volunteer teachers as they attended a three-week intensive training session which involved presentation of theory, demonstrations, practice, and feedback. In the school year immediately following the training, nine teachers implemented the ECRI …

A Descriptive Study Of Teacher, School, And Training Characteristics In The Implementation Of The Cooperative And Inductive Teaching Models, Samuel M. Gaikwad Jan 1991

A Descriptive Study Of Teacher, School, And Training Characteristics In The Implementation Of The Cooperative And Inductive Teaching Models, Samuel M. Gaikwad

Dissertations

Problem

Much of what is known concerning implementation of innovation in schools is dependent on personal characteristics of teachers and principals, and school characteristics. Few studies have focused on study group (groups of 3-6 teachers and principals) activities and principals' active participation in the implementation processes. The purpose of this study was to describe the training session and bring to light some factors that would help teachers, who have gone through an intensive and well organized training session in the cooperative and inductive models of teaching, to implement the innovation in spite of personal and school characteristics.

Method

Integrated Thematic Instruction : A Descriptive Case Study Of Its Adaptation And Implementation, Premalatha Gaikwad

Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to describe the operational form of the innovation--Integrated Thematic Instruction within the context of its implementation.

An embedded single case study design was used to carry out this qualitative study, with Integrated Thematic Instruction (ITI) as the unit of the case study. The questions that guided the study were: What does ITI look like when implemented by the teacher? What are the contextual elements of implementation of this program? What variations are found in the implementation of this innovation by different teachers?

A review of related literature revealed the historical, philosophical, and theoretical underpinnings …

Patterns Of Rhetoric/Patterns Of Culture : A Look At The English Writing Of Japanese Students, Suzanne Raschke Jan 1991

Patterns Of Rhetoric/Patterns Of Culture : A Look At The English Writing Of Japanese Students, Suzanne Raschke

Dissertations and Theses

That a link exists between language and culture has long been accepted; however, not only the extent, but also the exact nature of that link remains unclear. In recent years, rhetoricians have raised questions about how culture affects the patterns of organization and other rhetorical features of writing. At present, the search for answers to these questions is made difficult by the cultural bias imposed by the language of any analysis of writing that may be undertaken and by a lack of criteria that can be used in performing such an analysis.

Portfolios As Developmentally Appropriate Assessment In Early Childhood Education, Deborah Thompson Jan 1991

Portfolios As Developmentally Appropriate Assessment In Early Childhood Education, Deborah Thompson

Dissertations and Theses

Traditional use of formal assessment techniques in early childhood education is not congruent with the knowledge and philosophies that have begun to guide curriculum and practice. The discontent with current assessment approaches has created a need to develop alternate assessment methods. The practice of portfolio assessment is posed as a developmentally appropriate alternative in this thesis. Current literature on portfolio assessment related to kindergarten/first grade setting supports portfolio assessment in both theory and practice in early childhood education.

Section Iii: Promoting Diversity: Gender And Multicultural Issues In Academe Jan 1991

Section Iii: Promoting Diversity: Gender And Multicultural Issues In Academe

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Few issues of the past decade have provoked as much interest, print, and passion in Academe as those of gender equality and multicultural diversity. This should come as no surprise. These vital concerns touch the personal and professional lives of all involved in the higher education enterprise: students, faculty, staff, and administrative officers. And if there are to be satisfactory resolutions to the problems we currently face in these areas, each of us must do his or her utmost, including, of course, the faculty development professional. The four articles in this section boldly, but judiciously, address the issues of gender …

Section Iv: Meeting The Challenge Of The Adult Learner

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Those who till the fields of Academe know that while the basic topography may remain essentially the same over the years, there are always enough changes-in climate, in availability of resources, in supply and demand, in technology-to make the enterprise interesting. Indeed, each decade seems to bring with it a virtual cornucopia of challenges. Certainly the 1980's delivered its fair share of issues and concerns, including that of dealing with the emergence of the adult learner as one of the major forces in higher education.
