In Florida, there is the anomaly of a student successfully completing a prescribed curriculum leading to the associate in arts degree and having the degree and access to the upper division delayed or denied because of an inability to pass a four-hour exam. The exam is called the College-Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST), and recent studies postulating biases within the Competency standards of the test et concern about statistically significant score differences between certain populations have raised issues about the test performance of nontraditional students. Many Chapter I first grade students, at the practicum site, were not meeting pupil progression standards in reading and had already been retained in kindergarten or first grade. As a result, they would be administratively placed in second grade while still below the beginning second grade reading level. This statement was confirmed by the scores on a reading assessment test. In order to enhance the mastery of these required reading skills, a tutorial program was designed to train parents in methods which helped the children to improve their basic reading skills. The purpose of this study was to identify the common educational objectives of Empire state College students. Understanding the goals of adult learners, the student body of Empire state, is important, since adult students tend to be highly purposive. Objectives were examined by type and for differences that may result from area of residence and gender. Four hundred and thirty-seven entering students were asked to indicate the importance of 19 goal statements as reflecting their educational objectives.
