Molecular Organic Compounds Of Picryl Chloride, Kenneth C. Hart Aug 1931

Molecular Organic Compounds Of Picryl Chloride, Kenneth C. Hart

Masters Theses

It has been known for a long period of time that two saturated organic compounds are capable of uniting to form a molecular or addition compound. This being true, the idea of the present valence theory must be modified. Of the newer theories advanced by numerous investigators none seems to entirely solve the problem. It remains for someone to present a theory which will explain the linkage of all addition compounds. With this as the ultimate aim, a series of investigations is being conducted in this laboratory in an endeavor to give more accurate information concerning the formation of addition …

Development Of Public School Music, Keith B. Deswarte

Bachelors’ Theses

The object of this thesis is to show to what extent music is recognized in the public schools. Its growth, in other words, from the singing school to the well rounded and organized music course of the present day public school. There is a slowly developing conviction that m ch of the old teaching of art in. the schools is attended by great waste, if not real injury to children on account of false pedagogical principles and lack of understanding of. child development. In the development of this thesis, I will try to show the new methods of music in …

Extra-Curricular Activities In The Junior High School, Irma Crotty May 1931

Extra-Curricular Activities In The Junior High School, Irma Crotty

Bachelors’ Theses

The value of extra-curricular activities in the junior high school is no longer questioned. The amount of space given to them in recent educational publications proves that there is an intense interest in them at the present.

This contribution is an attempt to set forth the basic principles underlying the administration and supervision of extra-curricular activities. A description of the common types of extra-curricular activities together with their aims and values, is presented. No attempt at detailed discussions has been made, as the problems of each activity are so vast that each one merits a volume in itself. A few …

Junior High School Reading, Grace E. Burdick

Bachelors’ Theses

The Essential Objectives in Reading in the primary grades the mechanics of reading demand the attention and are quite thoroughly mastered. The intermediate grades stress rate and comprehension and bring them to a high degree of efficiency. By the time a child leaves the sixth grade his reading habits are quite well established. The later grades must continue the work done in the middle grades, extend it and broaden it.

Juvenile Delinquency And Education, Mary J. Carrigan May 1931

Juvenile Delinquency And Education, Mary J. Carrigan

Bachelors’ Theses

The problem of juvenile delinquency is as old as humanity. Ever since there have been children there has been the problem of their misdemeanors and punishment. In the beginning the treatment of the problem was relatively simple since it was purely a family affair and entirely under the jurisdiction of the father as the head of the family. As civilization became more complex so did the problem of delinquency. The factors which caused it increased in number and importance, bringing about greater complexity in its punishment and treatment. At first little or no attention was given to any means of …

The Value Of Grammar As An Aid In Learning To Use The Correct Forms In English, Dorothy F. Pennington

Graduate Thesis Collection

The problem involved in this study is to determine, as far as possible, what value the knowledge of grammar has in the process of learning to use correct English. The term "grammar" as used in this dissertation means the knowledge of a limited number of the more important rules and definitions as applied to English, such as: the classification of verbs and pronouns; the classification of sentences according to form, with a limited amount of the analysis of sentences.

A Comparative Study Of All State Relief And All Non-State Relief School Units In Indiana, John B. Troncin Jan 1931

A Comparative Study Of All State Relief And All Non-State Relief School Units In Indiana, John B. Troncin

Graduate Thesis Collection

The stimulation for this study lies in the fact that many of the State Relief School Units in Indiana are in financial distress. This distress is evidenced by numerous articles in the Indiana newspapers stating that many of the teachers in the State Relief Units were not receiving their salaries at the time they were due. The salaries of some of the teachers for the school year 1928-29 were still unpaid in 1930. The money given by the state was insufficient to meet the needs of these State Relief School Units.

The Choice Of Studies Of Ninth Year Pupils As Affected By Parental Occupation, Cultural Standards Of The Home, And Ability, Aptitudes, And Interests, Frances Longshore

The modern high school with its complex curriculum seems to present to the average pupil a maze through which he cannot well work his way without careful educational guidance. It is the purpose of this study to discover the relationship which exists between the choice of courses which beginning pupils make, the social and cultural standards of their homes and their own abilities, aptitudes, and interests. It is also the purpose here to show how great is the need for effective guidance.

Stammerers And Their Social Adjustment As Shown By Means Of Eight Case Studies, Ida C. Green

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to observe intensively, by means of complete case-histories, the general and specific conditions, past and present, causing a lack of social adjustment in eight stammers. The subjects were stammerers from the Stockton High School who showed by examination that they were socially maladjusted.

The study aimed to discover whether traits and abilities present in the stammerers, as represented by their interests and achievements, contributed to their lack of social adjustment; and whether, by a process of reeducation in the light of their history and present condition, their social adjustment could be made.

Assuming oral …

A Study In Child Thought, Language And Logic : Observations Of A Six-Year-Old Child, Individually At Home, And Together With His Play And School Groups : Experimental Tests And Analysis Of Observations, In Accordance With The Theories Of Piaget, Gertrude Allen Farley

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It must be made clear in the very beginning that the basis for this thesis is the two volumes by Dr. Jean Piaget, Institut J. J. Rousseau, Geneva, Switzerland, The Language and Thought of the Child and Judgement and Reasoning in the Child; hence the very small bibliography, the material used being observations and experimental tests based on these volumes.1

Much has been written heretofore on the vocabulary and phonetics of child language, piling up statistics on the number of words various children have acquired at different ages and on the sentence structure (number of adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, etc.) …

Changing Tendencies In The Teaching Of Formal Grammar, Helen Tichenor

Graduate Thesis Collection

The question as to whether any appreciable improvement in the speech and writing of children is realized by means of a knowledge of formal grammar is debatable. The belief is more or less common among educators that formal grammar does not function to a degree which justifies the time spent upon it.

Secret Societies In The Secondary Schools Of The United States, Harold E. Chastain

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The problem of secret societies in secondary schools has long been a vexing question to educators in the field of secondary education. Because of this situation high schools have been torn apart, school principals and super- intendents have lost their positions, fraternity boys have been expelled from school, educators and parents have taken their differences to court, and the law-making bodies of nearly half the states in the union have taken it under consideration for legislation. A vast amount of periodical literature has been written on the subject of secret societies and not a few chapters in books dealing with …

The Rise And Development Of Safety Education In The Public Schools Of The United States, John Metzger Jan 1931

The Rise And Development Of Safety Education In The Public Schools Of The United States, John Metzger

Graduate Thesis Collection

It has not been the purpose of the author of this thesis to present a history of safety in general, for such a treatise would obviously be an account of the history of man himself and, as such, would be worthy of the fullest development within itself.
