Diagnosing Disorderly Children: A Critique Of Behaviour Disorder Discourses, Valerie Harwood

Valerie Harwood

Based on the author's in-depth research with children diagnosed with behavioural difficulties, this book provides a thorough critique of today's practices, examining:

*The traditional analyses of behavioural disorders and the making of disorderly children *The influence of the 'expert knowledge' on behavioural disorders and its influence on schools, communities and new generations of teachers *The effect of discourses of mental disorder on children and young people *The increasing medicalisation of young children with drugs such as Ritalin.

Embedding Evidence-Based Practice In A Nursing Curriculum: A Benchmarking Project, Wendy Chaboyer, Ania Willman, Patricia Johnson, Lynette Stockhausen

Patricia Johnson

The development of a new nursing curriculum in one Australian university provided the opportunity for academic staff to consider the best ways to integrate the requirements of evidence-based practice (EBP) into nursing education and culminated in the development and conduct of a specific benchmarking project. Data collection for the project included the use of university documents, observations and informal discussions with staff. An analysis of this information resulted in the emergence of five categories that were grouped into two major categories, namely infrastructure and processes. Within the major category of infrastructure, two minor categories, namely evidence-based nursing (EBN) Unit and …

The Highly Questionable "Highly Qualified" Label, Elaine Hampton Dec 2003

The Highly Questionable "Highly Qualified" Label, Elaine Hampton

Elaine Hampton

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 is instrumental in the national movement toward the use of one short-answer test as the gate-keeping instrument to prevent or allow university graduates trained in education to enter the teaching profession. This investigation questions the wisdom of this test-based certification by looking at the impact on recent (university education program) graduates who have had difficulty passing the tests. Four of these graduates provided information via in-depth interviews. The interview data provide evidence that raises questions about the value of taking these people out of the teaching profession. The individuals provide evidence of …

The Decline Of History, Rowan Cahill Dec 1976

The Decline Of History, Rowan Cahill

Rowan Cahill

The author addresses the contemporary (1970s) loss of confidence, and interest, in history as a subject amongst Australian secondary school students and educational administrators. He mounts a defence of the teaching of the subject in schools, and argues for its complexities. Strategies to increase the appeal of the subject and its perceived relevance are suggested.
