Interesting conversations take place when teachers are presented with a chart displaying the number of As and Bs compared to the number Ds and Fs. What does a snapshot of your classroom, school, or district reveal about both student and teacher academic success? This presentation allows participants to identify resolutions to barriers, as well as receive tools that enhance student/teacher engagement - as Academic Success Is the Only Option.

Prospective students across Illinois work excessively towards the achievement of getting accepted to the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. Though the selection process of applicants is meant to be fair and only admit the most qualified students, it has been found that this process has its flaws. While GPA and SAT scores are factored into these decisions, additional factors such as geographic, gender, and ethnic criteria are involved. Participants in this workshop will engage in ensemble building drama activities. These activities will lead to the creation of multiple pieces of drama. The participants will also develop a list of interview questions they can use if they choose to implement the project at their schools or organizations. One of our concerns when approaching education, is the need to better recognise the impact that general curriculum and pedagogy have on student wellbeing. In addition to effective and explicit wellbeing programs, we believe that embedding authentic opportunities for local and global citizneship into the curriculum positively affects wellbeing. We believe that adopting the New Pedagogies for Deep Learning framework addresses student wellbeing and we unpack aspects of the model that do so, emphasising the role of global citizenship development.

This project utilized past research data from Hand-in-Hand to create an educational toolkit that will help the students in Hand-in-Hand’s after school program accomplish their SCL goals. SCL goals, or supports for community living, help the students at Hand-in-Hand become more comfortable in society and help develop their independence in the future by working on everyday tasks. The phenomenon of learning abroad will not diminish in an increasingly globalized economy and it is important to better understand the interconnectedness of relationships, benefits, and potential detriments in this growing area of education. This study is an exploration of conceptualizations of nationality in educational spaces from a transnational perspective. I create a co-constructed narrative with a transnational student that traverses the borders of two nations, while considering the relations and practices of her experiences in association to my own in order to better understand national identity formation as it is interconnected with formal and implicit curriculum.

The Honors College (HC) was asked by the FIU Provost to take the lead in creating an innovative culture for undergraduate research at FIU. Our presentation is about how two of the elements of HC’s successful research program have been expanded university-wide: our Conference for Undergraduate Research (CURFIU) and our research opportunity database, the FIU Undergraduate Research Portal. The creation of this database provides an interactive site with information about research opportunities, conferences, scholarships, and a subscription system for students. We also discuss the challenges we face as we try to promote undergraduate research in an environment of limited resources.

Flipped model of instruction for online instruction is effectively being used by faculty in higher education. What is the flipped classroom? The flipped classroom is a pedagogical model in which the typical lecture elements of a course are reversed. Short video or recorded lectures are viewed by students before the online session. The online session is devoted to facilitating the knowledge, understanding, and discussion of the content. During online class sessions, instructors function as facilitators, encouraging students in individual inquiry. The online session time is focused on exercises, projects, and/or discussion.

This is the report of a year-long blended learning project designed for advanced Chinese newspaper reading and news video watching. In advanced Chinese learning, newspaper reading and news video watching are considered quite challenging for Chinese language learners for their formal style, large and time-sensitive vocabulary, and limited exposure through traditional ways of learning/teaching. To meet these challenges, we incorporated three blended learning components into the traditional language teaching/learning, including: online video news subtitling, the digital exercises and assessment system, and computerized vocabulary-learning modules tailored to the course materials used for two advanced Chinese classes.
