International students experience adaptation difficulties that have the potential to affect their psychological well-being. Qatar has a growing yet understudied population of international students. The problem addressed in this study is that little is known about the role that cultural distance, psychological well-being, and selected demographic variables play for the international student population in Qatar. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to measure the effect of the predictors—cultural distance, age, gender, and length of residency—on the psychological well-being of international students in Qatar. The framework used to guide this study was cross-cultural adaptation theory by Ward and Searle. …

The research questions focused on principals’ perceived challenges to support elementary science teachers, as well as recommendations for improved training and resources to support teachers. A basic qualitative study consisted of semistructured interviews with 12 elementary principals and assistant principals. The …

Comparison Of Kindergarten Readiness Outcomes For Two Preschool Accreditation Systems, Amanda Krause Discala Jul 2024

Comparison Of Kindergarten Readiness Outcomes For Two Preschool Accreditation Systems, Amanda Krause Discala

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There is little evidence about whether enrollment in one of the two most used quality rating systems for preschool programs in New Jersey leads to a significant difference in student outcomes. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine whether meaningful differences exist in the kindergarten readiness scores of preschool children at centers using different quality improvement systems. The theoretical framework, Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems model, posits that human development is influenced by many varying social systems working together. The research question examined if there were significant differences in scores from the beginning to the end of the year on …

Exploring Pre-Service Elementary Teachers’ After Student-Teaching Content Knowledge And Teaching Knowledge Of Fraction Operations, Elizabeth Salgado

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

With the changes in Common Core State Standards, it was essential to explore how elementary pre-service teachers’ sense of fractions is developing and their thoughts about how to teach fractions. A gap in practice exists because it is unknown how pre-service elementary teachers, after student-teaching, perceive their level of in-practice knowledge in (a) knowledge of content and (b) knowledge of pedagogy in fraction operations. The three research questions centered on content knowledge, pedagogy knowledge, and knowledge of students, and the study was guided by the concepts of Lee Shulman’s categories of teacher knowledge. The purpose of this study was to …

Effect Of Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Program On Fourth Graders’ Foundational Reading Skills, Kathleen Michelle Fox

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem is that fourth-grade students in the United States are not meeting reading proficiency benchmarks. Phonemic awareness is a strong predictor of reading success; however, few studies have investigated its effectiveness for intermediate elementary students who are at risk or struggling readers. The purpose of this quantitative quasi-experimental causal-comparative study was to find whether fourth-grade students who are identified as at-risk or struggling readers will show improvement in phonemic awareness and word recognition skills when taught with the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Program as a supplement to regular reading instruction as compared to students who received traditional core reading instruction. …

Early Childhood Educators’ Perceptions Of Practicum And Its Relationship To Self-Efficacy In Teaching, Terri Gray Johnson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Limited research exists on the factors that contribute to community college students’ development of self-efficacy (SE) while serving as preservice teachers (PSTs) during their early childhood education (ECE) practicum. This lack of research is concerning because educators who have high SE enhance the educational well-being of all children. The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences in practicum that early childhood educators perceive contribute to the development of SE among PSTs. The conceptual framework was derived from Bandura’s theory of SE. The focus of the research questions was on understanding the development of SE during practicum experiences and …
