The Home-Based Family-Centered Counselor: Selected Demographic Characteristics, Working Conditions And Perceived Job Satisfaction, Debra Weaver Shoopman Jan 1984

The Home-Based Family-Centered Counselor: Selected Demographic Characteristics, Working Conditions And Perceived Job Satisfaction, Debra Weaver Shoopman

Graduate Research Papers

In the 1880 1 s, with increased urbanization and industrialization in the United States, came the problem of growing numbers of children who could not be adequately cared for by their families. Public assistance was non-existent. Charity was administered privately at the discretion of the benefactor (Jones, Neuman & Shyne, 1976). Until recently, society's response to the problem of inadequately cared for children was to remove the child from the situation, thus 11 protecting11 their rights. Child welfare agencies are now discovering that this is often not the best way to meet these children's needs, but rather that the most …

Private School Teacher Perceptions Of Elementary School Childrens' Needs: A Clarion Call For Elementary School Counselors, Karen I. Kerr Jan 1984

Private School Teacher Perceptions Of Elementary School Childrens' Needs: A Clarion Call For Elementary School Counselors, Karen I. Kerr

Graduate Research Papers

Recent research has confirmed that divorce contributes to a major crisis in the lives of most children, with stress engendered by that crisis often entering into the academic learning of school-age children. Between 1960 and 1975, the number of one-person households doubled. Jenkins (1976) reported 9,000,000 children under the age of eighteen live in single-parented families. The United States Bureau of Census reported, "more than 18% of the nation's school age children live with a lone parent" (1982, p. 536) and projected that 48% of all children born in 1980 will live a considerable part of their life with a …

Alcoholism Treatment Services And Rehabilitation Facilities Available To The Chemically Dependent Client, Susan Leann Lang Jan 1984

Alcoholism Treatment Services And Rehabilitation Facilities Available To The Chemically Dependent Client, Susan Leann Lang

Graduate Research Papers

Alcoholism is recognized as one of the most devastating social and health problems facing contemporary society today (Krirnrnel, 1971). Alcoholism is also a major force which intensifies many of the other problems which face each individual and has become a target of much concentrated concern. Yet, alcoholism treatment has been the focus of few professional organizations and remains under the direction of law enforcement officials.

Sexual Attitudes, Beliefs, And Opinions Of Single, Custodial Parents, Lois J. Staff Jan 1984

Sexual Attitudes, Beliefs, And Opinions Of Single, Custodial Parents, Lois J. Staff

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to examine the beliefs, attitudes, and opinions of single, custodial parents toward sexual behavior and whether these beliefs, attitudes, and opinions are affected by their roles as single parents. Data for this study were collected by use of the questionnaire survey method. The sample consisted of 103 single, custodial parents receiving services for at least one minor child from a non-profit social service agency. An item analysis was performed on the data collected from the nine-item questionnaire, Sexual Attitudes of Single Parents, relating demographic information and specific attitudes regarding sexual activity. Because of the …

The Role Of Empathetic Communication In Nursing Education, Colleen Marie Jarosh Jan 1984

The Role Of Empathetic Communication In Nursing Education, Colleen Marie Jarosh

Graduate Research Papers

Machines, tubes, wires, alarms, closed circuit TV, and intercoms are gradually filling in the spaces around patients' hospital beds. These are spaces that ten years ago were filled by nurses hand-monitoring the progress of patients one at a time. While high technology now allows a nurse to monitor the progress of several patients simultaneously, interpersonal communication through the intercom has varied effectiveness.

A Study Of Video Services In Iowa Public Libraries, Robert Philip Moore Jan 1984

A Study Of Video Services In Iowa Public Libraries, Robert Philip Moore

Graduate Research Papers

One of the ongoing concerns of public libraries today has been the selection of materials and services that best meets the diverse needs and interests of their communities. Library boards have established selection policies and committees, and interlibrary loan networks to fulfill the needs of their customers. Nevertheless, the problems of audiovisual selection and services have been amplified due to incompatible formats. Careless selection has resulted in obsolete equipment and idle software.

Adolescent Suicide: An Investigation Of Causes And Prevention Measures, Pamela J. Wehrkamp Jan 1984

Adolescent Suicide: An Investigation Of Causes And Prevention Measures, Pamela J. Wehrkamp

Graduate Research Papers

Suicide is not a recent phenomenon among adolescents. Young people have taken their own lives for as long as history has been recorded. It is not coincidence, or by accident, that literature, too, is full of reports of adolescent suicides (Konopka, 198J). Ophelia drowns herself after she is rejected by Hamlet. Romeo kills himself when he believes his beloved to be dead, who in turn kills herself when realizing Romeo had committed suicide.

Self-Concept Enhancement For The Gifted, Connie L. Gaumon Jan 1984

Self-Concept Enhancement For The Gifted, Connie L. Gaumon

Graduate Research Papers

The field of gifted education is still a new one. The main concerns in the research literature and curricula in gifted education have been the academic and intellectual accomplishments of gifted individuals. But little investigation or program development has evolved with respect to the affective factors and their influences for the gifted. The self-concepts of such individuals have often been neglected or overlooked.

A Review Of Evidence On The Effect Of Teaching Content Area Reading On Student Achievement, Debra Takatsuka Jan 1984

A Review Of Evidence On The Effect Of Teaching Content Area Reading On Student Achievement, Debra Takatsuka

Graduate Research Papers

Quality of education is an issue of primary concern in the United States today. Accusations that children are graduating with inadequate academic skills have been frequent. Concern has been expressed regarding declining SAT scores, and there has been a general outcry for the establishment of minimum standards for both high school and college graduation. The necessity for students to acquire a solid education currently ranks as a high individual and social priority (Criscuolo, Vacca, & LaVorgna, 1980).

Instructional Usage Of Microcomputers In Elementary Mathematics Curriculum, Stephen J. Bloom Jan 1984

Instructional Usage Of Microcomputers In Elementary Mathematics Curriculum, Stephen J. Bloom

Graduate Research Papers

It has been observed, by the researcher, that during the last five years schools have increasingly used microcomputers in their elementary curricula. In a recent study, Chambers and Bork (1980) selected a sample of 974 school districts, which closely approximated the total U. S. public schools, and conducted a survey in order to assess the current and projected use of the computer in the U. S. public secondary and elementary schools. It was found that nearly 90% of the responding school districts were using the computer in support of the instructional process; this is a dramatic change from the past. …

Enrollment Of Girls In Industrial Arts Courses From 1977-82 In Iowa High Schools, Ronald A, Wunderlich Jun 1983

Enrollment Of Girls In Industrial Arts Courses From 1977-82 In Iowa High Schools, Ronald A, Wunderlich

Graduate Research Papers

Girls have enrolled in high school industrial arts classes for many years. In a thesis completed in 1958 (Haynes, 1958), it was recorded that 16 percent of Iowa's high schools enrolled girls in industrial arts courses. Today, it is a rare exception to find a high school industrial arts program that does not enroll girls. From district to district and year to year the numbers vary. It is the intention of this study to determine if the enrollment of girls is decreasing, increasing, or remaining constant. This information is needed to provide a further understanding of the enrollment of girls …

Seven Variables Influencing Life Satisfaction Of The Aged, Pamela A. Galbraith Jan 1983

Seven Variables Influencing Life Satisfaction Of The Aged, Pamela A. Galbraith

Graduate Research Papers

This paper deals with the topic of life satisfaction of the aged, a rapidly growing segment of the population of the United States. The aged are persons found in many groups which constitute our society--racial, economic, education, geographic, political, and sexual. Persons who are considered aged are those who are sixty-five years of age or older. The age of sixty-five can be considered an arbitrary point, since a person does not suddenly become aged. Some persons of sixty-five years are retired, others are not; some may be healthy and active, while others are sickly and inactive; some may be involved, …

A Review Of The Literature On Stress And The School Administrator, Judy Green Jan 1983

A Review Of The Literature On Stress And The School Administrator, Judy Green

Graduate Research Papers

One of the most common maladies facing American society today is that of stress and its concomitant physiological and psychological effects. Too often it is actually the work environment that fosters a great deal of this tension and anxiety. Researchers estimate that half of all working people are unhappy with their careers, and that as many as 90 percent may be spending much of their time and energy at jobs that do not help them get any closer to their 'goals in life' (Hunt, 1983, p. 38).

Standardized Achievement Tests And Their Implications For Guidance Counselors, John William Hansen Jan 1983

Standardized Achievement Tests And Their Implications For Guidance Counselors, John William Hansen

Graduate Research Papers

In the last twenty years the general public has challenged the judgment of professional educators regarding the quality of education provided in public schools (Feldt and Forsyth, 1973). At present, the public is demonstrating an interest in knowing how well students are mastering important academic content and skills. Reassurances that educational expenditures are worthwhile are no longer being accepted in the absence of factual evidence. As a result, there has been increased attention given to the problem of the evaluation of student performance in educational programs.

A Post-Secondary Curriculum Guide For Teaching Word Processing With Microcomputers, Charles Bruce Houlton Jan 1983

A Post-Secondary Curriculum Guide For Teaching Word Processing With Microcomputers, Charles Bruce Houlton

Graduate Research Papers

In an attempt to deal with the paperwork explosion occurring in business offices, administrative management has developed the concept of word processing as a means of increasing office efficiency. In business education departments of educational institutions "word processing" has become a confusing term. Too often it is use solely as a synonym for certain types of electronic equipment. According to Frank (10:22) it is the responsibility of educators to instill into the students the idea of a process and a procedure. Word processing is the application of it to the office. Modern technology has been applied to every other facet …

Volunteerism In The Elementary Schools, Katherine Hill Meaney Jan 1983

Volunteerism In The Elementary Schools, Katherine Hill Meaney

Graduate Research Papers

Schools have turned to the oldest tradition of America by looking at the use of volunteers in our schools. Some anthropologists have suggested that voluntary associations have become more common and significant as society has advanced, but we can trace volunteerism back to 8000 B.C. Soaring cost of education at all levels both state and local is climbing. The cost of educating our young is rising daily. There is a rise in salaries for teachers; believed to be rightfully claimed. There is also increasing pressure to upgrade the duties of certified teachers. Demands are greater on the teacher. Demands are …

Inventory: Willingness Of Adolescents To Discuss Personal Concerns With Adults And With Peers, Phyllis Ver Ploeg Jan 1983

Inventory: Willingness Of Adolescents To Discuss Personal Concerns With Adults And With Peers, Phyllis Ver Ploeg

Graduate Research Papers

Personal problems continue to be of overwhelming concern to high school students (Olson, 1979). Every year more students below age 18 run away from home. Millions of students abuse alcohol and other drugs. The Department of Health reports one teen in 20 has a drinking problem. Suicide is the second leading cause of death of people ages 15 to 24. Olson (1979) further states that unwanted pregnancies among teenagers have increased, and that about 25 percent of all babies born today are born to teenagers. Child abuse has become a major social problem.

Computer Assisted Instruction In The Elementary School, John William Stevens Jan 1983

Computer Assisted Instruction In The Elementary School, John William Stevens

Graduate Research Papers

Computers as we know them today had their infancy in the late 1940's. Since that time computer technology and its concomitant applications in everyday life have expanded at nearly geometric proportions. Today the technology is advanced to about the same state that black and white television had reached in the late 1950's. Concurrent to the early development of the computer were two major trends in education: an awareness among educators for the need of individualized instruction and renewed interest in programmed learning. Thus a natural confluence of a budding technology and educational objectives occurred, resulting in computer assisted instruction. Introduction …

Some Attitudes Of Minority College Students With Some Attitudes Of Selected Educational Opportunity Staff Toward Instruction And Student Personnel Services, Michael Gordon Thomas Jan 1983

Some Attitudes Of Minority College Students With Some Attitudes Of Selected Educational Opportunity Staff Toward Instruction And Student Personnel Services, Michael Gordon Thomas

Graduate Research Papers

Student affairs professionals, in collaboration with teachers and students, can effectively improve the quality of college life; in fact, it is their responsibility to do so. Unfortunately, however, the profession has tended to react instead of take positive action. If student affairs workers are to influence what is to come, they must anticipate change, not merely adjust to it. An essential element in attitude toward professional development is that educators feel professional; that they are regarded as such, and have a direct and guiding influence on programs and activities which have an impact upon them (Holly & Blackman, 1981).

The Newly Unemployed And The Role Of The Comprehensive Employment And Training Program Manpower Specialist I (Msi), Kathleen Cohea Harper Jan 1983

The Newly Unemployed And The Role Of The Comprehensive Employment And Training Program Manpower Specialist I (Msi), Kathleen Cohea Harper

Graduate Research Papers

Unemployment has become an increasing national and local concern. Many people are having to face the prospect of never returning to their old jobs. What employment means and the extent and effects of unemployment were researched in the literature. This research focused on the "newly unemployed"--e.g. white, older (45 years or more of age), married males who have never before experienced the problems and frustrations of long-term unemployment. This specific group was chosen for research because they are a departure from those traditionally seen in the Black Hawk County Comprehensive Employment and Training Program (CETP). The problems relating to their …

Trends In Major Field Of Study For Women In Higher Education: A Comparison Of Iowa And National Data From 1972 To 1981, Rena Gayle Daly

Graduate Research Papers

In the last decade, significant changes have occurred in the makeup of the college student population. Prior to the 19701s middle to upper class white males predominated and the student population tended to be academically homogeneous because colleges determined and limited their enrollments on the basis of academic records and test scores. During the 19701s there was an influx of student admissions from all races and socioeconomic groupings. College student populations changed along sexual parameters, too, with women constituting an increasingly larger percentage of the enrollment in higher education. Indeed, women account for most of the enrollment growth in recent …

The Future Role Of The Vocational Counselor, David M. Goswick Jan 1983

The Future Role Of The Vocational Counselor, David M. Goswick

Graduate Research Papers

Future society may demand flexibility in many aspects of a person's life. One certainty is that there will be change throughout life, and proliferation of choices will likely characterize many aspects of a person's life space. Walz, {1975) emphasizes that an individual will continually be required to make critical life decisions under short time limits with little information.

Roles And Duties Of Activity/Athletic Directors In The 115 Largest High Schools In Iowa, James Irvin Boyd Jan 1983

Roles And Duties Of Activity/Athletic Directors In The 115 Largest High Schools In Iowa, James Irvin Boyd

Graduate Research Papers

The student activity program in today's high school is complex. Some high schools have activities ranging from boys' and girls' interscholastic athletical events, to school clubs, to dramatics and musicals, and bake sales. Other high schools have a well-tuned student activity program reflecting their school district's philosophy of the educational value of the program to the student. Other school district's activity programs are financially in trouble and lack community, faculty, and student support; the school programs reflect this lack of support.

A Model Of Transcendence For Counselors And Clients In The Process Of Counseling, Neal R. Mcmann Jan 1983

A Model Of Transcendence For Counselors And Clients In The Process Of Counseling, Neal R. Mcmann

Graduate Research Papers

Developing a model of transcendence for clients in counseling involves a number of necessary organizational steps. Without a solid foundation in counseling theory, there can be no basis upon which to build. Establishing a theoretical background in counseling provides a structure for the process. This structure aids in the development of a model of transcendence which utilizes counseling theory to help clients deal more effectively with their problems.

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of the paper was to review the literature regarding Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Vietnam veterans for a clearer understanding of the continuing readjustment problems that are affecting thousands of men and women in the United States. Because the Vietnam War was unique in so many aspects, it created unique postwar problems for its veterans.

Employee Fitness Programs: A Study Of The Benefits For Corporate Industry, Jeanne Carlson Duffy Jan 1983

Employee Fitness Programs: A Study Of The Benefits For Corporate Industry, Jeanne Carlson Duffy

Graduate Research Papers

Historically great amounts of energy have been channeled into the education of minds to perform with maximum effort and efficiency. Often these energy expenditures concentrated on singular cognitive processes in order to develop the intellect, and, in doing so, neglected other parts of the whole self. As the concept of the whole or total self became more accepted, educational programs expanded to include a wider variety of curricula: humanities, arts, career education, psychological education, and physical education as well as the traditional "3 r's". Perhaps because of American society's emphasis on graduation (regardless of level) as an end (rather than …

A Rationale For The Implementation Of A Student Employment Grievance System, Judith Decker Jan 1983

A Rationale For The Implementation Of A Student Employment Grievance System, Judith Decker

Graduate Research Papers

The reason for the study of the student employment grievance system was to develop a supported rationale for implementing a student employment grivance [sic] system. Factors needing to be considered were the passage of pertinent student rights legislation, the paralleled development of organized labor-management relations, and the increased job dissatisfaction experienced by student employees. The study will include becoming familiar with the uniqueness of student employees as a population, identifying the more common causes of grievances, becoming more knowledgeable of the necessary counseling skills to effectively facilitate a grievance system, examining the evolution of the existing University of Northern Iowa's …
