Library Service In Iowa Juvenile Correctional Institutions Compared With National Standards Prepared By The American Correctional Association, Ellen Youds

Graduate Research Papers

This study was done to determine the extent to which the two juvenile correctional institution libraries in Iowa met selected standards from Library Standards for Juvenile Correctional Institutions, prepared by the American Correctional Association. The hypothesis of the study was that neither of the institutions would meet 50% or more of the selected standards.

The two librarians completed a questionnaire and were also interviewed. The library at Eldora met over 50% of the selected standards. The librarian is a member of the educational and planning team. This facilitates the meeting of many of the standards. The library at Toledo met …

Facilitating Science Understanding Through Children's Literature, Michelle A. Sand Jan 1987

Facilitating Science Understanding Through Children's Literature, Michelle A. Sand

Graduate Research Papers

Americans have been enamored with the achievements of industry until recently considered successful. In fulfilling the goal that all citizens should be literate, assembly line techniques associated with industry have been extrapolated to educational programs for children. The development of the total product has been broken into small segments. Reading instruction, too, frequently has been oversimplified and associated with a scope and sequence of skills for children to master. Students have been subjected to pretest, teach, posttest with mastery of language fragments measured by a percentage level assuming that learning has taken place.

The Attitudes Toward Computers Of The Selected Upper-Elementary/Middle School Students, Lih-Jiun Tsuei

Graduate Research Papers

The use of computer technology as a learning tool is becoming increasingly important in education (Russell, 1982). The Office of Technology Assessment (1982) predicts that by 1994 over four million microcomputers will be found in schools. The National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics has listed computer literacy as one of the ten basic skill areas in mathematics instruction (1978). The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, in its Agenda for Action, has recommended that ''a computer literacy course, familiarizing the student with the role and impact of the computer, should be a part of the education of every student (1980, …

Microteaching: Selected Research And Experience, Vickie Trent-Wilson Jan 1987

Microteaching: Selected Research And Experience, Vickie Trent-Wilson

Graduate Research Papers

A group of educators at Stanford University, under the direction of Dwight w. Allen, developed microteaching and the technical skills approach to teacher education as they attempted to analyze teaching into well-defined components that could be practiced, taught, evaluated, and controlled (Gardner and Bartholomew, 1969, p. 45). Microteaching has since been experimentally incorporated into the teacher education program at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.

Writing In The Content Areas: A Review Of Current Literature, Thomas H. Wiegand Jan 1987

Writing In The Content Areas: A Review Of Current Literature, Thomas H. Wiegand

Graduate Research Papers

For many years experts in the field of education have emphasized the importance of writing in the content areas. As early as 1919 a manual was published which called for more composition work by teachers of history, science, and other content areas (Harwood, 1985). In the 1960's a book was published in which it was argued that only when teachers in all disciplines emphasize the importance of writing will students, in turn, recognize its value (Fader, 1968). It was during the 1970's that the major call went out for "writing across the curriculum" (Britton, 1975).

Developing A Literature-Based Reading Program In The Third Grade, Janelle A. Bastian Jan 1987

Developing A Literature-Based Reading Program In The Third Grade, Janelle A. Bastian

Graduate Research Papers

The late William Gray said, "Children differ so widely in interests, capacity to learn, and motives that it is impossible to provide adequate stimulation and guidance through the use of the same materials and group instruction." (West, 1964). The aim of reading instruction should be to develop readers who are independent learners. They need to learn how to rely on themselves to help them discern what is important from print and how to go about obtaining that information (Moore & Moore, 1987).

The Relationship Between Black Student Racial Identity Attitudes, Self-Expectancy, And Academic Performance At The College Level, Primrose Simphiwe Mngadi Jan 1987

The Relationship Between Black Student Racial Identity Attitudes, Self-Expectancy, And Academic Performance At The College Level, Primrose Simphiwe Mngadi

Graduate Research Papers

The fact that black student academic performance has persistently fallen short of white student performance has been a matter of concern among educational practitioners and has been documented in countless educational and sociological literature. Not only has this trend been reflected in lower SAT scores and lower GPA's, but also in lower retention and higher attrition rates (Garibaldi, 1986; Wilson, 1981). The results of numerous studies have suggested various factors that might contribute to this unfortunate state of affairs. These range from factors that are internal to the student such as self-esteem, achievement motivation, and self-expectancy, to factors that are …

The Study Of Book Design To Extend The Understanding Of A Story, Natalie S. Passow Jan 1987

The Study Of Book Design To Extend The Understanding Of A Story, Natalie S. Passow

Graduate Research Papers

What is book design? Why do some books have colored or illustrated endpapers, illuminated letters and decorative borders? Is it necessary for children to know what book design is and how it is used in order to comprehend fully the stories they read? Is an awareness of book design something that parents should have when choosing a book for their child? If book design is not an important aspect in determining which books children and adults choose to read, and also to their understanding of the story, why do publishers spend so much time and money on this aspect? Why …

Gifted Early Readers: A Profile, Rebecca Sue Peterson Jan 1987

Gifted Early Readers: A Profile, Rebecca Sue Peterson

Graduate Research Papers

Gifted children possess many unique qualities, among which is the ability to read prior to direct instruction; this usually occurs in first grade at approximately six years of age. There are many more such children in the population than ordinarily assumed (Salzer, 1984). The incidence of early readers within the gifted population has been demonstrated in many studies. Perhaps the foremost study on gifted children was done by Terman (1925). His findings show that approximately 50% of the children in the group were early readers. This information has also been documented by others. Hollingsworth (1942) found 80% read before school. …

Fostering Higher Level Comprehension Abilities Among Fifth-Grade Students, Douglas H. Brightman Jan 1987

Fostering Higher Level Comprehension Abilities Among Fifth-Grade Students, Douglas H. Brightman

Graduate Research Papers

The redefining of functional literacy has been advocated by recent studies of reading achievement. The National Commission on Excellence in Education, A Nation at Risk, (1983) reports the need to implement programs that will foster the development of higher thinking-language abilities. It states that these abilities are essential for meeting the challenges of an everchanging complex world. Students need to interpret, evaluate, and apply what they read. The National Assessment of Educational Progress Report (LaPointe, 1984) concurs with this view: Findings of this project reveal most students are competent in literal comprehension but lacking in higher thinking-language tasks in all …

Adult Children Of Alcoholics: Review Of The Literature, Helen Karamitros Deets Jan 1987

Adult Children Of Alcoholics: Review Of The Literature, Helen Karamitros Deets

Graduate Research Papers

Many adults who experience the trauma of growing up in an alcoholic family system develop a condition of similar symptoms and behaviors, called the Adult Children of Alcoholics Syndrome (Kritzberg, 1985). It is estimated that over half of the twenty-eight to thirty-four million children of alcoholics are adults (Black, 1981). Cermak ( 1985), Bowden and Gravitz (1984) noted that although children of alcoholics compromise one of the largest identifiable groups in America, recognition of the issues these individuals face has been very recent.

Assessing Teacher Qualities And The Teacher Interview, John J. Stephens Jan 1987

Assessing Teacher Qualities And The Teacher Interview, John J. Stephens

Graduate Research Papers

The teaching profession has not established what qualities should be sought or measured in a teacher application to distinguish one applicant from another. Nor has it implemented a valid, reliable selection system (Smith, 1980). During the past 15 years public schools have moved from a position of recruitment of enough teachers to fill the classrooms, to one in which limited vacancies provide an opportunity to use quality procedures. Teacher vacancies which occur in every educational organization due to turnovers, promotion, and the creation of new positions, present important organizational decision situations. Teacher selection is one of the most important administrative …

Using The Fused Approach Of Computer-Based Instruction And Distance Learning As A Pre-Inservice Technique In The Job-Related Education Of Teachers, Tina Marie Anne Sherrill-Range Jan 1987

Using The Fused Approach Of Computer-Based Instruction And Distance Learning As A Pre-Inservice Technique In The Job-Related Education Of Teachers, Tina Marie Anne Sherrill-Range

Graduate Research Papers

Recent information, summarized by Seal and Casler (1984), appears to stress certain educational issues which include the rapid growth of a technology-based society. They maintained an argument for properly administered technology by skilled professionals. Training in the area of technology-based instruction for teachers can help to ensure its proper application in instructional situations. Because of the enhancement of learning which can take place through technology-based instruction, there is a long-term need to address teacher preservice to the profession on the topic. Likewise, inservice teacher education programs need to be updated if technology implementation in schools is to be successful.

Reasons For A Lack Of Understanding Of Geometric Measurement Concepts By The Sixth Grade Student, Marylin Witt Jan 1987

Reasons For A Lack Of Understanding Of Geometric Measurement Concepts By The Sixth Grade Student, Marylin Witt

Graduate Research Papers

In the past, it has been assumed by middle grade teachers that their students come to them with an adequate knowledge of geometric measurement concepts, since linear measurement has been taught beginning in first grade. However, the researcher has noticed that sixth-grade students seem overwhelmed by, and display a lack of understanding of, many of the geometric measurement concepts. Other educators have also found this to be true of students in the middle grades. This paper will be an investigation into the causes for this problem.

The push for excellence in education has accelerated during the 1980's. As a result, there is renewed emphasis on using standardized achievement tests in American schools. Every school district in the United States requires some sort of standardized achievement test (Sproull & Zubrow, 1981). In a report to the 1980 National Invitational Conference, Jennie Yeh, Joan Herman, and Lawrence M. Rudner stated that every child will complete at least six full batteries of standardized achievement tests before graduating from high school. The results and use of these results has become a national concern to parents, teachers and others involved in …

Many groups of people have come to the United States of America with high hopes - - hopes of religious freedom, educational opportunities, and the hopes of freedom from government oppression. All had dreams of better lives for themselves and their families. They were seeking a country whose government held political and religious freedom in high regard. (Banks, 1982) These attitudes were the very foundation upon which the Constitution of the United States was built.

Considerations And Preplanning In The Initial Establishment Of Telemarketing Training, Diana Johnson Jan 1987

Considerations And Preplanning In The Initial Establishment Of Telemarketing Training, Diana Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

According to McGraw Hill Inc., the average cost of an industrial sales call has now reached $150. For direct mail, over the past five years, postage rates alone have increased 80% for first class postage and 70% for bulk mail. Add to this the substantial increase in type, print, paper and labor cost, and it is easy to see that direct mail is becoming less and less affordable.

Characteristics Of The American Middle School, Md. Idris Hamdan Jan 1987

Characteristics Of The American Middle School, Md. Idris Hamdan

Graduate Research Papers

If we look back on the history of education in the United States, we find many patterns of school organization. Prior to the establishment of middle schools, the middle level of schooling was commonly known as junior high school. According to Van Til, et al., (1967), the first junior high school was established at Columbus, Ohio in 1909. Since then, both the 8-4 plan and 8-5 plan, the standard organizational patterns used for public schooling in the United States after the Civil War, have been gradually changed to the newer form--the 6-3-3 plan. The first prompting to establish a junior …
