This event will take place in The Cave on the first level of the D.P. Culp Student Center from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. It is sponsored by the Mary V. Jordan Multicultural Center and Native American Student Organization at ETSU.
November is Native American Heritage Month, and its observance is important for educating people on the history and contributions of the Indigenous peoples.

Local college students who are aspiring podcasters can compete for their podcast to be showcased nationally in the third annual “College Podcast Challenge,” hosted by NPR.
The competition is open for submissions until Jan 5, 2024. As in years past, the challenge is the same: produce a podcast between three and eight minutes on a topic, issue or story of your choosing. The winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship and $500 will be awarded to finalists. The grand prize winner and finalists will be notified in February 2024.

August had lots of milestones, including welcoming our Class of 2027 during Gatton Ready and our White Coat Ceremony.
We celebrated the accomplishments of Dr. Jessica Burchette, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice, who was honored with the prestigious Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching at our university's Faculty Convocation. During its quarterly meeting held earlier today, East Tennessee State University’s Board of Trustees approved the largest pay increase for employees in the university’s modern history. This includes raising the university’s starting hourly wage for full-time, benefits-eligible employees to at least $13.65, a 19.3 percent increase over the current starting rate of $11.44.
The starting wages for employees of ETSU’s Quillen College of Medicine and Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy will be at least $15 per hour. Additionally, full-time, benefits-eligible employees will receive a 4.5 percent increase, capped at $7,500 per person. The $7,500 maximum does not apply to employees …

A top natural products research scientist from Colombia visited East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy recently to meet with student pharmacists and help demonstrate the drug discovery process.
Dr. Ruben Torrenegra, who was recognized in 2018 by the government of Colombia as one of its top scientists, has helped progress the college’s drug discovery program since 2008 when he partnered with Dr. Victoria Palau, professor emerita of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Palau started her cancer research with plants when she came to ETSU in 2007.

East Tennessee State University’s Center for Cardiovascular Risk Research (CCRR) will host a quarterly meeting of the SmokeFree Tennessee Coalition this month as part of their work to help guide and develop a statewide strategic plan for tobacco control.
In 2022, the Tennessee Department of Health enlisted the ETSU College of Public Health to provide strategic planning services and expert guidance to create a five-year comprehensive tobacco control plan. After drawing hundreds of visitors to campus during the last holiday season, East Tennessee State University is preparing to once again open its synthetic ice-skating rink to the community.
The rink is located on the ETSU University Commons, adjacent to the D.P Culp Student Center.
Following ETSU’s annual holiday lights celebration on Monday, Nov. 13, the rink will be open for visitors. That evening, ETSU faculty, staff and students may skate for free with an ETSU ID. Members of the community are welcome to skate; rental rates are available on the skating website.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee recently appointed East Tennessee State University Coordinator for Leadership and Civic Engagement Nathan Farnor to serve on the Volunteer Tennessee Commission for the State of Tennessee.

Moderate-to-extreme levels of drought are gripping much of Tennessee, according to East Tennessee State University’s Dr. Andrew Joyner.
A member of the Department of Geosciences, Joyner is the state’s official climatologist.

“Mental Health First Aid” is a public education program that introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental illnesses, builds understanding of their impact and gives an overview of common support frameworks.
