Pairing And Sharing: A Technique To Increase Engagement And Achievement With Struggling Middle School Readers, Patricia Cameron

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine whether reading with a partner coupled with active reading based communication would increase the engagement and achievement of seventh grade READ 180 students. READ 180 was a reading intervention program which consisted of four main components: whole and small group instruction, software, and independent reading. Many students struggled with the independent reading portion of the program, failing to finish books and/or pass comprehension quizzes. During the study, students were assigned a partner. They read together instead of separately during independent reading times. Three primary types of data were collected to monitor …

Factors Related To Successful Implementation Of An Aac Device For An Individual With Autism, Michaela Worms May 2018

Factors Related To Successful Implementation Of An Aac Device For An Individual With Autism, Michaela Worms

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

Communication impairment is a defining characteristic of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (American Psychiatric Association, 2013); therefore, the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) has become an essential part of language intervention for children with autism that experience significant difficulties with communication (Flores et al., 2012). Assessing children’s preferences for AAC options may be important with respect to AAC abandonment, which is a problem in the AAC field (Johnson, Inglebret, Jones, & Ray, 2006). This single-subject study identified factors related to successful implementation, acquisition, and usage of an AAC system. The clinician collected baseline data on the client’s spontaneous production …

Using Coaching Strategies To Build Caregiver Capacity, Beth Hadrava

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

The researcher collected qualitative and quantitative data to examine the impact of using a coaching model with caregiver-participants. Interview data, engagement ratings and a research journal were used to collect engagement and caregiver capacity data. As a result of data collection and analysis, the author reported …

The Effect Of General Instruction Paired With A Pictorial Prompt For Everyday Tasks With Students With Disabilities, Leah Sparks May 2018

The Effect Of General Instruction Paired With A Pictorial Prompt For Everyday Tasks With Students With Disabilities, Leah Sparks

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

The purpose of this study was to find if students were able to follow a verbal general instruction more successfully when paired with a visual prompt versus instruction given with only a verbal prompt. This study looked at students with cognitive disabilities, specifically students who have an IQ of 70 or lower. The study looks to see if pairing a visual with a verbal prompt will increase the understanding of the request from staff. With the research that was conducted, the researcher wanted to obtain a better understanding of students with disabilities’ aptitude when given a simple direction verbally versus …

Grade Retention: Knowledge And Attitudes Of Teacher Educators And Preservice Teachers, Jenny Pearson May 2018

Grade Retention: Knowledge And Attitudes Of Teacher Educators And Preservice Teachers, Jenny Pearson

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

Grade retention, otherwise known as “failing” or “being held back”, is a common practice for schools when they feel a student is not performing at or meeting school standards. While grade retention is a popular practice, very little research supports the use of it as an effective intervention over other interventions (Jimerson, 2001). A survey, structured around Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1985) was distributed to preservice teachers and teacher educators at a Midwestern university to examine their knowledge and beliefs about grade retention, as well as the prevalence of the topic of grade retention in teacher training. Results from …

Assistive Listening Devices In Primary And Secondary Educational Settings: A Systematic Review, Paige Wagner-Skinner May 2018

Assistive Listening Devices In Primary And Secondary Educational Settings: A Systematic Review, Paige Wagner-Skinner

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

The purpose of this study was to identify the scientific evidence available to support the use of assistive listening devices in primary and secondary educational settings. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) makes it clear that it is the role of the speech-language pathologist (SLP) to modify the classroom environment, as needed, to enhance communicative abilities for this population (ASHA, 2016; Carney, 1998). Each journal article included in this study was published in a peer reviewed journal between the years of 2000 and 2018, written in the English language, and comprised of scientific information relevant to the research question proposed. Experimental …

How Oral Reading Fluency And Reading Comprehension Are Intertwined, Ivy Rath May 2018

How Oral Reading Fluency And Reading Comprehension Are Intertwined, Ivy Rath

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a correlation between oral reading fluency and reading comprehension. Specifically, the study focused on finding if a student who is a highly fluent reader is also strong is comprehension and if a student is a low fluent reader, then they are also low in comprehension. Students were baseline tested at the beginning of the second semester to see where their oral reading fluency and reading comprehension scores were. Throughout the second semester of school, students were progressed monitored based on their baseline scores. Through careful analysis of the data …
