Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine whether reading with a partner coupled with active reading based communication would increase the engagement and achievement of seventh grade READ 180 students. READ 180 was a reading intervention program which consisted of four main components: whole and small group instruction, software, and independent reading. Many students struggled with the independent reading portion of the program, failing to finish books and/or pass comprehension quizzes. During the study, students were assigned a partner. Communication impairment is a defining characteristic of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (American Psychiatric Association, 2013); therefore, the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) has become an essential part of language intervention for children with autism that experience significant difficulties with communication (Flores et al., 2012). Assessing children’s preferences for AAC options may be important with respect to AAC abandonment, which is a problem in the AAC field (Johnson, Inglebret, Jones, & Ray, 2006). This research study investigated the use of coaching strategies to foster engagement and build the capacity of caregivers of very young children receiving early intervention services. This study was conducted as a result of concerns regarding low caregiver engagement and unanswered questions about acquisition of caregivers’ skills. Four participants were included in this study. The researcher collected qualitative and quantitative data to examine the impact of using a coaching model with caregiver-participants. The purpose of this study was to find if students were able to follow a verbal general instruction more successfully when paired with a visual prompt versus instruction given with only a verbal prompt. This study looked at students with cognitive disabilities, specifically students who have an IQ of 70 or lower. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a correlation between oral reading fluency and reading comprehension. Specifically, the study focused on finding if a student who is a highly fluent reader is also strong is comprehension and if a student is a low fluent reader, then they are also low in comprehension.
