This paper summarizes the results of a qualitative study where the purpose was to explore the lived experiences of adjusting to U.S. culture among Black African international non-traditional age adult students while attending predominantly White higher academic institutions. Implications for faculty and higher education administration working with Black African adult international students on American university campuses are suggested.

This qualitative study utilized narrative analysis to explore the counter-learning of an oppressed Kurdish woman from Turkey. Critical constructivism was used to analyze counter-learning and Frankfurt School-based Marcusian critical theory was used to analyze the socio-political context and its impact on the oppressed.

Black Graduate Students’ Social Relationships With White Professors And Students In A Predominantly White Public University, Juanita Johnson-Bailey, Thomas Valentine, Ronald M. Cervero

This study employs a mixed method approach to understanding the cross-racial relationships experienced by Black graduate students at a major Southern research university. Data were collected using a multifaceted mailed survey. Cluster analysis was employed to construct a four-part typology of cross-racial social relationships. Qualitative comments were examined to better understand the identified types. The study reveals the variety of perceived social relationships experienced within a single university.

The purpose of this study was to investigate how women who create custom content for The Sims2 acquire IT-related skills and knowledge. Interviews with twenty-six women suggest the importance of interest-driven learning, opportunities for horizontal as well as vertical learning, and the opportunity to develop “loose ties” with an extensive online social network of other Sims fans.

Both museum and adult learning researchers seek to understand how to best educate adults. Despite a plethora of common areas where the two fields intersect this review found limited evidence of shared epistemological, theoretical and empirical research or “roots”. Given the mutual interests of these fields it is argued that sharing of epistemological, theoretical and empirical research would benefit both. Implications and future research opportunities are discussed.
