Narrative is a fundamentally human way of making meaning. In this study we explore how narrative can be used to foster learning in higher education and how it provides a way to conceptualize the learning process itself. To do this we examine the use of autobiographical learning portfolios in a nontraditional undergraduate program and the use of learning journals in a graduate course in adult education.

Literature on critical thinking discussing the experiences of African American students is limited. This study examined the experiences of African American undergraduate business students, as they became stronger critical thinkers. The study concludes by suggesting educators in higher education settings embrace the cultural diversity of the students in their classroom to inform culturally relevant course content development.

This paper describes adult learners' lived experiences as participants in world affairs educational programs; how they make meaning of content and delivery; and how past experience, culture, and meaning making affect program choice. Findings suggest that looking at individuals’ past and present experiences provide insight into participants’ cultural lenses.
