This presentation is designed for anyone who has desired to teach their community about physical accessibility issues. It will be present within the framework of the "Accessibility Scavenger Hunt", an activity developed by myself in conjunction with Northern Arizona University staff and faculty. The goal of the scavenger hunt was to teach the community about campus accessibility issues without resorting to using simulation exercises. We will discuss the framework of the activity as well as the role that the activity had in improving the accessibility of the campus.

This session will highlight my experience teaching a sophomore seminar course about the rhetoric of disability. Each seminar had to have a focus in multiculturalism in the United States, and many of the established courses focused on issues of race, gender, ethnic, and religious identity. Mine was the first course in the offerings that treated ability level as a component of multiculturalism or diversity. Managing college requires organizing, prioritizing, ongoing learning and timely work completion. These are the executive functioning skills for young adults that when under-utilized, can limit access to effective learning. In this workshop, the presenters will provide an overview of how the Academic Coach program, at Bridgewater College, helps students adjust and develop necessary skills for ongoing learning and work completion. Development of the program, training and certification standards and leadership opportunities for coaches to become team leaders will be discussed.

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville transitioned from a volunteer/stipend note taking system to a paid note taking system. This allowed us to increased our fill rate for approximately 30% to 98%. In sharing our experiences during the transition, we discuss lessons learned and the basic process in establishing a paid system. This presentation will be of interest for all.

Dancers are artistic athletes that use their bodies as their instrument. Dance is a sport that requires significant skill and higher levels of fitness. Unfortunately, dancers are not as physically fit as sport athletes. This may not only increase their risk of injury, but also limit their maximum dance performance. Resistance training offers significant physical and psychological health benefits. But, there is very limited research regarding dancers’ resistance training habits. Both the number of recreational and competitive runners and the number of injuries have increased over the past decade. Track and field includes a variety of events, which differ in volume and intensity. The variability of the sport causes both chronic and acute injuries. Although chronic injuries are most prevalent, muscular strains are the most frequent acute injury (Jacobsson et al., 2011). Muscular strains have accounted for approximately 17% of all track and field injuries (Kluitenberg et al., 2014). A variety of predisposing factors for muscular strains have been described. This review of literature explores the varying amount of evidence available for different stretching protocols included in the warm-up period. The objective of a comprehensive warm-up is to increase core temperature and improve muscle elasticity to prepare muscles for the demands of activity. Static (held) stretching and dynamic (slow moving) stretching seem to be utilized more often, and they are most studied in the bulk of stretching research. There has been less research published on the effect of ballistic (rapid bouncing movement) stretching. Virtual And Authentic Tennis: Similarities And Differences Of Three Common Tennis Strokes, Kristy M. Noble

The purpose of this mixed-methods multi-phase study was to compare the similarities and differences of three common tennis strokes performed by National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I tennis players in an authentic and motion-based video game (MBVG) environment. Moreover, the perceived effectiveness of using MBVGs as a pedagogical tool was also examined. Statistical analyses revealed that the forehand, backhand, and serve were performed significantly different in the authentic and MBVG environments. However, the participants perceived that the MBVG forehand and serve were similar to the authentic environment. Throwing athletes of all sports have similarities, even if the sport itself is very different. Throwing an object creates a great amount of stress on the body, particularly at the shoulder and the elbow. A baseball pitcher should train and compete in all three planes of movement-sagittal, frontal and transverse. Training for throwing athletes has two main goals: to increase throwing power and to reduce throwing injuries. Analyzing training habits of a throwing athlete includes an understanding of the modalities they perform in order to prevent potential injuries from occurring.
