Episcopal Church Home For Children Records - Accession 31, Episcopal Church Home For Children
Episcopal Church Home For Children Records - Accession 31, Episcopal Church Home For Children
Manuscript Collection
This collection is a valuable source on the Church’s historical effort to extend its services for the social improvement of South Carolina (in this case the Episcopal Diocese’s program for destitute children.) While there is information on the Episcopal Home for Children from its beginning in 1850 to 1967, the actual records do not start until 1866. A centennial history of the Episcopal Home will serve as an aid and general guideline to the researcher. (See box 1, folder 1). The collection consists of minutes, reports of the annual meeting, general correspondence, superintendent’s records, health records, attendance registers, financial records, …

The Relationship Between Nature Connectedness And Physical Activity Patterns In A Sample Of Collegiate Students, Faculty, And Staff, Destinee Waddy
The Relationship Between Nature Connectedness And Physical Activity Patterns In A Sample Of Collegiate Students, Faculty, And Staff, Destinee Waddy
The Winthrop McNair Research Bulletin
PURPOSE: A strong relationship exists between physical activity (PA) and nature connectedness (NC); the most physically active individuals may also be the most nature connected. Designing PA programs and modifying college campuses through the lens of biophilia can provide a more logical, evidence-based approach to improve overall health and wellness. The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between physical activity and nature connectedness in a sample of collegiate faculty and students. METHODS: Participants completed two previously validated surveys: The International Physical Activity Questionnaire and the Connectedness to Nature Survey. Demographic data (age, race, campus affiliation) were also …

A Look At Mentorship In A Structured Undergraduate Program, Ta'niss Robinson
The Winthrop McNair Research Bulletin
From the great deal of research previously done in the area of mentorship, we know that it can be very valuable to individuals across all ages and fields. However, there has not been much research done on how mentorship affects undergraduate students while in a structured program. In this study, we examine aspects of mentorship in a structured undergraduate program from the perspectives of the undergraduate protégés. We aimed to look at what specific mentorship interaction protégés had with their mentors and what aspect of satisfaction protégés had with their mentors. The structured program was the Ronald E. McNair Scholars …
Invisible Barriers: Experiences Of First-Generation College Students Navigating Academia, Frances "Ana" Barkley
Invisible Barriers: Experiences Of First-Generation College Students Navigating Academia, Frances "Ana" Barkley
The Winthrop McNair Research Bulletin
Twenty-four percent of undergraduates in the US are considered first-generation and low-income (Engle & Tinto, 2008), while TRiO student support services serve less than 5% of these students (Mortenson, 2011). Previous research reveals that these students are less prepared for collegiate-level academic rigor, have fewer financial resources, and have less cultural and social capital compared to their non-first-generation and non-low-income peers (Engle & Tinto, 2008; Chen & Carroll, 2005; Engle, 2007, Willet 1989). Based on their testimonies, are there specific challenges that first-generation, low-income students are currently experiencing while navigating higher education in 2018? How can these testimonies inform the …
One Stop Along The Corridor Of Shame: A Portrait Of Public Education In Marlboro County In The Post-No Child Left Behind Years, Jackson Branch
One Stop Along The Corridor Of Shame: A Portrait Of Public Education In Marlboro County In The Post-No Child Left Behind Years, Jackson Branch
Graduate Theses
In the years following the passage of the historic No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation, South Carolina has dropped to having one of the lowest ranked public education systems in the United States. As many schools in South Carolina are rural and in high poverty areas, this should have been a state where the federal legislation made great strides towards closing the education gap. One of the greatest struggling counties in the state, Marlboro, has seen its share of troubles since the passage of NCLB. This thesis will look at Marlboro County in the post-NCLB years and will examine (1) …

Assessing Stress In College Students After Breathing Meditation With And Without Music, Joshua L. Le Clerg
Graduate Theses
College students face increased levels of stress due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which can adversely affect their academic performance. Therefore, it is critical for students to have access to practices that reduce stress, such as breathing meditations and listening to calming music, which are cost effective and require minimal time commitment. This study aimed to examine the efficacy of combining breathing meditation and listening to music for five minutes a day, five days a week, for two weeks. Fifteen undergraduate students completed the study and were randomly assigned to a control group who completed the breathing meditation without music (n=8) …
Knee Pain And Injury In Volleyball Athletes, Tori Dube
Knee Pain And Injury In Volleyball Athletes, Tori Dube
Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)
Today, athletic programs in schools are becoming increasingly popular. Volleyball is one of these popular athletic programs, along with basketball, soccer, and football. Because of the increased popularity of these sports, there have been increased rates and occurrences of injuries. Among the most common injuries recorded are knee injuries, including ACL tears and overuse injuries like patellar tendinitis. Overuse injuries can be quite painful and are linked to increased risk of osteoarthritis. Athletes tend to set aside this pain to avoid missing playing time. However, it is crucial for overall health to implement intervention strategies and programs to treat these …

The Political Intervention And Public Policy Influencing High Tuition Rates At South Carolina Colleges And Universities, Zuri Anderson
Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)
Winthrop University students often ask why the institution’s tuition rates are so high. This is an important question for students, who wonder why they pay higher tuition and fees to Winthrop compared to other universities with similar services. This investigative journalism project informs people, especially curious Winthrop students, about the complex reasons for Winthrop’s tuition rates. Open records, government documents, primary and secondary sources, public sources, news articles, in-depth interviews, and statistical research were utilized and analyzed for the research. Following the 2007 recession, which changed the financial landscape for colleges and universities, postsecondary and higher education faced funding issues. …

All Talk, But No Action: A Reexamination Of Education In South Carolina’S Corridor Of Shame, Laraven Temoney, Laura D. Ullrich
The Winthrop McNair Research Bulletin
South Carolina’s “Corridor of Shame” is an area of rural and poverty-stricken communities that stretch along Interstate 95. This area has received large amounts of media attention since the release of a documentary, entitled Corridor of Shame – The Neglect of South Carolina’s Rural Schools. In addition, the area attracted more attention during a visit from former President Barack Obama, then a U.S. Senator and Democratic Presidential Candidate, to J.V. Martin Junior High School in Dillon, South Carolina. Many of the schools in the “Corridor of Shame” do not have the resources they need to provide their students with a …

The Effects Of Physical Activity Classes On Stress In College Students, Kellie Cooper, Janet Wojcik
The Winthrop McNair Research Bulletin
Background: While stress is unavoidable, many college students face overwhelming levels of stress and lack proper stress management skills. Increased levels of stress can lead to poor mental and physical health as well as poor academic performance. Objective: To examine the differences in stress levels of students of different racial backgrounds who participate in for-credit vs. recreational physical activity (PA) classes. Methods: Participants (n=53) completed a survey composed of open-ended questions about stress and stress management, as well as the short-version International Physical Activity Questionnaires (IPAQ). Results: Because of limited sample size, no significant differences were found between students who …
Encouraging A "Kaleidoscope Of Views": Graphic Literature As A Tool For Informative Text Comprehension In The Secondary English Classroom, Chelsea Ellen Bergmann
Encouraging A "Kaleidoscope Of Views": Graphic Literature As A Tool For Informative Text Comprehension In The Secondary English Classroom, Chelsea Ellen Bergmann
Graduate Theses
Over the past decade, graphic literature has fueled the conversations of theory and criticism among scholars and educators alike. With the critical need to teach informative texts and college-ready skills in secondary schools, the debate arises on how these mediums can be further used to extend the capabilities of young readers in a 21st century global community. Thus far, the scholarship on graphic literature in the secondary English classroom proves to be helpful in certain areas, while revealing a gap in others. Missing wholly are discussions about targeted reading comprehension skills particularly related to informative texts and their writer’s purpose, …

This study examines interdisciplinary teaching, which provides students the opportunity to work with and apply knowledge from multiple disciplines organized around an overall theme or problem. The purpose of this research is to explore ways to integrate two subjects effectively for an interdisciplinary lesson. Teaching interdisciplinary lessons helps encourage students to go beyond the typical restrictions of just one content area, and it helps them to become more creative, focus on critical thinking, and work on communication skills. My research will include teacher-written blogs, scholarly articles, and interviews with several middle school educators about the impact of interdisciplinary teaching in …

If you “google” the phrase, the first two or three trillion hits that come up are in favor of the status quo and against the current Federal Communications Commission’s chairman, Ajit Pai, and the FCC’s plans to scuttle the Obama-era rules on net neutrality: no blocking, no throttling, and no paid prioritization.

Higher Education, Adaptive Change, And The Adult Learner: Moving From Academic Access To Transformative Excellence, Patrick Guilbaud, Heather Tillberg-Webb
Winthrop Faculty and Staff Publications
As the profile of postbaccalaureate students across the country continues to become older and more diverse, colleges and universities of all sizes and types — state, private, technical, and community — are repositioning themselves to effectively serve a broader mix of learners. However, due to the unique background, professional goals, and academic interests of adult learners, higher education institutions (HEIs) must be adaptive across all of their program development, education delivery, administrative service, and student support units to meet the challenge of serving all of their learner constituencies effectively.
We propose implementing the supporting transformative excellence (STE) framework, which focuses …

Abruptly, from a nearby spot a voice speaks...
“Studies into effective note-taking strategies all concur that students should independently CAPTURE, ORGANIZE, and TRANSFORM their notes.
“This research is not to be taken lightly! Support professionals: ask yourself whether they cast doubt on the value of traditional forms of note-taking support! Shouldn’t ALL students be given the POWER! to take notes for themselves?”
Moments later… strange diagrams on a projector screen highlight the connection between effective note-taking strategies and the mysterious science of memory.
The voice again.
