Writers have criticized the literature on college student involvement as being biased, starting from the premise that the residential experience is the normative one, and have called for a reexamination of the concept of student involvement. Thus in response to that need, this study explored the concept of student involvement from commuter college students' perspectives.;Focused on both Astin's theory of student involvement and Pace's work on quality of effort, it was hypothesized that there were differences between highly involved commuter college students and commuter college students who were minimally involved in the college experience. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of an Banduraian-based group social skills training in the prevention of stress, depression, and social anxiety of Taiwanese graduate students in the U.S.;The subjects of this study were 60 Taiwanese students recruited at four seminars sponsored by the Taiwan Ministry of Education, which aimed to prepare students for future overseas study. Thirty subjects were randomly assigned to the experimental condition and were trained with social skills before they left for U.S. The other thirty subjects were assigned to the control group without any treatment.;It was hypothesized that: (1) There would …

The purpose of this study was to examine personality factors related to adult divorce adjustment with a particular focus on anxiety, self esteem and locus of control.;Bowen Theory, with particular emphasis on the concept of differentiation of self, provided the theoretical rationale for this study. While Bowen related his concepts to marital and family functioning, the theory did not address the process of divorce. The present study attempted to fill a gap in the divorce literature by expanding Bowen Theory, with a primary investigative focus on adult post divorce adjustment and level of differentiation.;All 62 research subjects completed instrument packets …

The purpose of this study was to test the Bean and Metzner Model of Nontraditional Student Attrition (1985) in a small, rural community college environment. The influence of selected sets of background, environmental, and academic variables from the model were tested, in addition to, the individual variables contained within each set. The differences between the persister and nonpersister groups were examined by variables.;Data was collected via the Student Entry Questionnaire and the Student Questionnaire. Everyone who came in for placement testing at Paul D. Camp Community College during the fall of 1991 (n = 148) completed the Student Entry Questionnaire. …

The purpose of this study was to examine theories of organizational culture typically applied to the university level of organization and their applicability to the academic department. Chaffee and Tierney's (1988) theory of organizational culture, dimensions of culture, and leadership strategies became the basis for a qualitative case study of a Department of Biological Sciences in a metropolitan university.;Interviews of current faculty members, current and former deans, and other administrators were conducted. Observations were made of faculty meetings and retreats and of departmental governance committee meetings. Extensive review of documents and correspondence covering more that twenty years provided additional data.;Interview …

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between ex-spousal interactions following remarriage and the behavioral and emotional adjustment of stepchildren. The subjects for the study were volunteers and were recruited for the study either through The PACES Family Counseling Center at The College of William and Mary or through a networking sampling procedure. The study participants included stepchildren between the ages of 8 and 16, and their residential biological parents.;Thirty-one stepchild/biological-parent pairs participated in the study by completing a series of questionnaires relevant to ex-spousal interactions and children's adjustment. Recent instances of campus crime, government intervention, increased media attention, and significant public concern has caused widespread institutional reaction to the issue of campus crime. The purpose of this study was to measure the effectiveness of two types of educational, proactive, crime prevention programs implemented in the residential setting. The two programs evaluated were crime prevention seminars conducted by campus safety and residential life personnel and the periodic distribution of crime prevention literature within the residential environment. This study described spousal reactions to loss following a cancer related death. Anticipatory grieving behaviors and variables unique to cancer were examined using Lazarus' cognitive appraisal paradigm. An interview which focused on self-reported changes in thoughts and feelings from time of diagnosis to the time of the death was administered by the researcher to thirty men and/or women whose spouses had died from cancer over the past two and a half years.;Individual responses to the interview questions were categorized according to type of response. This study was undertaken for the purpose of determining if the siblings of gifted elementary students differ significantly from siblings of non-gifted elementary students in sibling affection, self-concept, or observable classroom behavior; and to investigate the relationship between sibling affection and self-concept, sibling affection and observable classroom behavior, and self-concept and observable classroom behavior.;The sample was selected from a large, urban school district located in the Mid-South. Thirty-eight pairs of siblings were selected from two-sibling families in which both children were enrolled in grades 3 through 6. Twenty-four facial pain patients and their spouses were videotaped answering questions concerning their relationships. This study was designed to more objectively support the clinical impressions of the MCV/VCU TMJ and Facial Pain Research Center's treatment team's view of the interactional characteristics of these couples. Prior to the team offering brief couples psychotherapy for assistance in the resolution of the pain problem, the team needed to assess the pain couples' relationship variables. Adherence to health care providers' recommendations is typically minimal unless all participants agree that specific treatment is warranted. This experimental study examined the effects of different methods of training and verbal cognitive ability on second-grader's acquisition of social problem-solving skills and teacher-rated behavioral adjustment. Subjects were assigned by classroom to either classroom training only, classroom training with parent training, classroom training without parent training (those parents who were offered training but did not participate) or control. The 25-lesson Rochester Social Problem-Solving curriculum was taught three times per week for nine weeks by classroom teachers and a four session parent training component was taught by mental health prevention staff members and this researcher.
