Examining How Students Make Sense Of Slow-Motion Video, Min Yuan, Nam Ju Kim, Joel Drake, Scott Smith, Victor R. Lee
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
Slow-motion video is starting to appear in science classrooms as a source of data for students to examine. However, seeing important features in such video requires a particular kind of student engagement and supported acts of noticing. This poster reports on an exploratory study of what students noticed and talked about when viewing slow-motion video during a classroom design experiment focused on bodily activity as it relates to motion and animation.

Rapid adoption of wearable tracking devices and motion sensitive apps has led to the development of the “Quantified Self” movement (QS). Some in the learning sciences community have begun to take notice and incorporate ideas from QS into the research and design of new learning environments. Yet the QS movement is still new enough that very little is known about it, and there are many open questions about how QS might be of value to the learning sciences. This paper provides some history of the movement and through a qualitative analysis of a public video corpus of QS presentations, identifies …

This paper examines variability in teachers’ usage patterns as they interacted with an online teacher support tool, the Curriculum Customization Service (CCS), as part of their professional work. The CCS is a web application that supports teachers in planning, adapting, sequencing, and enacting differentiated instruction in Earth science education. By mining the usage log files of over 40 teachers who used the CCS over a yearlong period, we analyzed for variability using a framework developed in marketing research to characterize appropriation of technology. This analysis helped reveal different kinds of teachers’ patterns along two dimensions: frequency and variability of use. …
The Role Of School District Science Coordinators In The District-Wide Appropriation Of An Online Resource Discovery And Sharing Tool For Teachers, Victor R. Lee, Heather M. Leary, Linda Sellers, Mimi Recker
The Role Of School District Science Coordinators In The District-Wide Appropriation Of An Online Resource Discovery And Sharing Tool For Teachers, Victor R. Lee, Heather M. Leary, Linda Sellers, Mimi Recker

When introducing and implementing a new technology for science teachers within a school district, we must consider not only the end users but also the roles and influence district personnel have on the eventual appropriation of that technology. School districts are, by their nature, complex systems with multiple individuals at different levels in the organization who are involved in supporting and providing instruction. Varying levels of support for new technologies between district coordinators and teachers can sometimes lead to counterintuitive outcomes. In this article, we examine the role of the district science coordinator in five school districts that participated in …

Some students struggle more than others during their college years and if not identified and given the help they need many drop out, resulting in less money for the university and lack of direction and education for the student. Students were identified as “at-risk” after failing their first exam in a general science course and were given an extra assignment to make up some points. The assignment was given to help students learn structured study skills in order to prepare for the following examination. The work turned in by these students was analyzed and critiqued for quality and effort. As …
Examining Psychological Inflexibility As A Transdiagnostic Process Across Psychological Disorders, Michael E. Levin, Chelsea Maclane, Susan Daflos, John R. Seeley, Steven C. Hayes, Anthony Biglan, Jacqueline Pistorello
Examining Psychological Inflexibility As A Transdiagnostic Process Across Psychological Disorders, Michael E. Levin, Chelsea Maclane, Susan Daflos, John R. Seeley, Steven C. Hayes, Anthony Biglan, Jacqueline Pistorello

The current cross-sectional study examined psychological inflexibility, a process in which behavior is rigidly guided by psychological reactions rather than direct contingencies or personal values, as a transdiagnostic process relevant to a range of depressive, anxiety, substance use and eating disorders. A sample of 972 first-year college students between 17 and 20 years of age completed self-report measures of psychological inflexibility and psychological distress as well as a structured diagnostic interview. Psychological inflexibility was significantly higher across a range of current and lifetime depressive and anxiety disorders as well as lifetime history of eating disorders, relative to students with no …
Which Facets Of Mindfulness Are Related To Problematic Eating Among Patients Seeking Bariatric Surgery?, Michael E. Levin, Kristy Dalrymple, Susan Himes, Mark Zimmerman
Which Facets Of Mindfulness Are Related To Problematic Eating Among Patients Seeking Bariatric Surgery?, Michael E. Levin, Kristy Dalrymple, Susan Himes, Mark Zimmerman

There has been growing research indicating the potential positive benefits of mindfulness-based interventions for obesity, but few studies have examined the relationship of mindfulness processes to obesity-related behaviors, particularly among clinical populations such as bariatric surgery candidates. The current study examined the relationship of specific mindfulness facets to a variety of problematic eating behaviors assessed through diagnostic interviews in a clinical sample of 820 patients seeking bariatric surgery. Results indicated that greater mindfulness on specific facets, particularly acting with awareness, were related to less binge and emotional eating. Greater mindfulness was also related, though less consistently, to less habitual overeating …
