Chinese Women Developing Leadership: Case Studies In Higher Education, Susan R. Madsen Feb 2010

Chinese Women Developing Leadership: Case Studies In Higher Education, Susan R. Madsen

Susan R. Madsen

Organizational leaders in various sectors (public, private, and social) across the globe often acknowledge the importance of preparing both men and women for strong, competent leadership. To assist these organizations, researchers (e.g., Bass, 1990; Bennis, 1989) have been conducting leadership studies for decades in various disciplines (e.g., education, management, psychology) to better understand this complex phenomenon. Kowske and Anthony (2007), Ardichvili and Manderscheid (2008), and Madsen (2009) have also highlighted the importance of studying leadership development within the human resource development (HRD) arena in the U.S. and beyond. Yet, studies in these disciplines on developing women leaders are just emerging …

Innovative Reflection Tools For Hrd Training, Development, And Education, Susan R. Madsen, Katherine Tunheims Feb 2010

Innovative Reflection Tools For Hrd Training, Development, And Education, Susan R. Madsen, Katherine Tunheims

Susan R. Madsen

The English word reflection is derived from reflectere, “to bend back” – as a mirror bends back the light, making apparent what is otherwise hidden or mysterious (Johnson, 2006). Reflection bends the light of our experiences back into our minds, to consider what the experience was about and what it meant. Reflection is also a critical element in transformational learning opportunities that should be part of effective training, development, and educational experiences (e.g., courses, workshops, programs). Since developing people is seeded in learning, HRD educators, scholars, and/or practitioners continuously work to understand the most effective methods and techniques to assist …

Issues Of Teacher Performance Stability Are Not New: Limitations And Possibilities, Thomas L. Good, Alyson Leah Lavigne Jan 2010

Issues Of Teacher Performance Stability Are Not New: Limitations And Possibilities, Thomas L. Good, Alyson Leah Lavigne

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

Morgan, Hodge, Trepinski, and Anderson (2014) have written an article that continues to confirm what we have known for some time—teacher effects on student achievement have limited stability. In this commentary, we address the other potential contributions this work can make to inform practice, policy, and research. While illustrating Morgan et al.’s inattention to history, we take the opportunity to reframe their findings. Considering the authors’ work in the context of past and current research, we illustrate that this collective set of stable evidence should convince policymakers that it is not reasonable to assume that teachers and teaching is stable …

Exploring Science Teachers' Attitudes And Knowledge About Environmental Education In Three International Teaching Communities., Todd Campbell, W. Medina-Jerez, I. Erdogan, D. Zhang

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

This study examined the similarities and differences among 171 Grade 7-12 science teachers from three different countries (54 U.S, 63 Bolivian, and 54 Turkish) with respect to their attitudes toward environmental education (EE) and instructional practices. The instrument employed explored how teachers‘ knowledge, instructional practices, decisionmaking process, and cultural features influenced their EE attitudes and praxis. The instrument, which was translated into Spanish and Turkish and then back into English, contained a personal data form that included demographic questions and a three-part questionnaire. Based on the analysis completed, significant differences were found between these three countries with respect to 1) …

A Model For Scaffolding Writing Instruction: Imsci, Sylvia Read Jan 2010

A Model For Scaffolding Writing Instruction: Imsci, Sylvia Read

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

The IMSCI model for teaching writing scaffolds the instruction so that students understand the features of a genre, see the teacher model writing a text in the target genre, participate in the creation of a text in the genre (through shared or collaborative writing), and independently write a text in the genre. This model is based on social learning theory and best practices in the instruction of English-language learners. An extended example of students writing historical fiction is provided, including images that show teacher modeling and student work.

"Blacks Deserve Bodies Too!" Design And Discussion About Diversity And Race In A Tween Virtual World, Y. B. Kafai, M. S. Cook, Deborah A. Fields

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, we investigate racial diversity in avatar design and public discussions about race within a large-scale tween virtual world called Whyville.net, with more than 1.5 million registered players of ages 8—16. One unique feature of Whyville is the player’s ability to customize their avatars with various face parts and accessories, all designed and sold by other players in Whyville. Our findings report on the racial diversity of available resources for avatar construction and online postings about the role of race in avatar design and social interactions in the community. With the growing interest in player-generated content for online …

A Comparison Of Intervention Approaches For Improving Literate Language Use By Children With Language Impairments, Kristina Morrey, Lichelle Slater, Kelsi Bailey Jan 2010

A Comparison Of Intervention Approaches For Improving Literate Language Use By Children With Language Impairments, Kristina Morrey, Lichelle Slater, Kelsi Bailey

Browse All Undergraduate research

Westby (1985) has characterized language development in terms of an “oral-literature” continuum. Oral language resides at one end of this continuum while “literate language” resides at the other. Broadly defined, oral language acquisition has been characterized as the process by which children “learn to talk.” Literate language has been described as “talking to learn.” Literate language is used to monitor, reflect, reason, plan and predict and is more “scholarly” than oral language. Children who use literate tend to perform well in school (Wallach & Butler, 1994) and have diverse vocabularies that can be used to describe and elaborate on concepts …

Going Public: What Writing Programs Learn From Engagement, Shirley K. Rose, Irwin Weiser Jan 2010

Going Public: What Writing Programs Learn From Engagement, Shirley K. Rose, Irwin Weiser

All USU Press Publications

An important new resource for WPA preparation courses. In Going Public, Rose and Weiser moderate a discussion of the role of the writing program vis-a-vis the engagement movement, the service learning movement, and the current interest in public discourse/civic rhetoric among scholars of rhetoric and composition. While there have been a number of publications describing service-learning and community leadership programs, most of these focus on curricular elements and address administrative issues primarily from a curricular perspective. The emphasis of Going Public is on the ways that engagement-focused programs change conceptions of WPA identity. Writing programs are typically situated at points …
