Evaluation Of A Trauma-Informed Teaching Intervention On The Educational Well-Being Of Youth In Residential Care, Angelique G. Day

Angelique G Day

In response to the high nationwide prevalence of psychological trauma among court-involved youth who have been exposed to abuse and neglect and the associated far-reaching adverse consequences, there are calls to develop a trauma-informed workforce across the various systems (child welfare, juvenile justice, mental health and education) designed to serve these traumatized young persons. We describe a pilot test of a modified version of the Heart of Teaching and Learning (HTL) curriculum, an intervention designed to increase trauma-informed practices in education settings. This program was implemented in a public charter school that exclusively serves court-involved youth placed in residential treatment. …

Working With Traumatized Students: Measures To Assess School Staff Perceptions, Awareness, And Instructional Responses, Angelique G. Day

Angelique G Day

This preliminary research provides the psychometric properties of three instruments that assess school staff perceptions of student behavior (TPSB), awareness of trauma (TTS), and responses to student behavior (TRSB). Validity and reliability were established for these measures using a sample of 26 school staff members. Cronbach’s alpha internal consistency coefficient for the TPSB resulted in α = 0.83 for both its “acting out” and “shutting down” subscales. The TTS had α = 0.91. TRSB resulted in α = 0.79 for the “acting out” subscale and α = 0.81 for the “shutting down” subscale. These measures may be useful in evaluating …

Is Three A Crowd? Exploring The Development And Satisfaction Of Students In Triples, Larry D. Long, Kyle Kujawa

Larry D. Long

Tripling, the assignment of a third resident to a room designed for two, is a common practice at many colleges and universities across the United States. Most of the research on tripling was conducted three or four decades ago, and research exploring how living in a triple affects the educational gains and satisfaction of college students is limited. The researchers compared the residential experience of residence hall residents who lived in standard double rooms to the experience of residents who lived in triples. The results revealed the residential experience of students in triples was comparable to the experience of students …

The Voice Of The Child In The Early Childhood Education Research In Australia And New Zealand: A Systematic Review, Qilong Zhang Dr.

Qilong Zhang Dr.

This literature review covers journal articles reporting early childhood education (ECE) research in Australia and New Zealand in the past 10 years and it has found that: (1) Nearly half of the articles lacked child-related data with an explicit or implied justification, while less than one-tenth failed to include child-related data with no justification; (2) Over one-third of the articles addressed the voice of the child, while less than one-tenth included child-related data for assessment purpose. A typology of the voice of the child has evolved from the review and it includes: pseudo voice (engendered by assessing the child), inferred …

Defining ‘Meaningfulness’: Enabling Preschoolers To Get The Most Out Of Parental Involvement, Qilong Zhang Dr.

Qilong Zhang Dr.

While previous studies have shown the potential benefits of parental involvement for children’s learning and development, certain types of parental involvement are considered by some researchers to be ‘ineffectual’ and ‘meaningless’, which leads to the question - What types of parental involvement are meaningful? Adopting Grounded Theory Method (GTM), the study aimed to identify elements that constitute meaningfulness of parental involvement in early childhood education. Interviews were conducted with 23 participants (11 teachers, 12 parents) from three types of early childhood settings in New Zealand. The findings showed that a combination of desirability, practicality, and effectuality determined meaningfulness of parental …

Influence Of Collaborative Learning On Women’S Experiences Of Engineering Education, Shannon M. Chance, Brian Bowe Jan 2015

Influence Of Collaborative Learning On Women’S Experiences Of Engineering Education, Shannon M. Chance, Brian Bowe

Shannon M. Chance

In a study of 55 electrical engineering students, Yadav, et al., found learning gains among students in Project-Based Learning (PBL) to be twice the gains of those taking traditional lecture courses. Du and Kolmos indicate group based PBL is more supportive and appealing to women than traditional lecture formats. Savin-Baden posits that female and minority students are more likely to ask questions in non-competitive PBL environments. This study interrogates the claim that PBL is particularly supportive to female and minority students. This work-in-progress uses a phenomenological research methodology to investigate how collaborative learning (in formal as well as non-formal settings) …

Racial Profiling As Institutional Practice: Theorizing The Experiences Of Black Male Undergraduates, Susan V. Iverson

Susan V. Iverson

In this paper we draw upon racial profiling literature as an analytic lens with data collected in a qualitative study of Black males at one university. We argue that racial profiling provides a system of assumptions and rules that inform decisions made and attach to interactions between Black males and their faculty, staff, and peers. We conclude with implications for practice and future research.

Inclusive Leadership And Gender, Margaret Grogan, Shamini Dias Jan 2015

Inclusive Leadership And Gender, Margaret Grogan, Shamini Dias

Margaret Grogan

A review of relevant recent research indicates that girls’ issues are generally off the radar screen in local pre-K-12 schools in the United States. This is particularly problematic because gender inequities continue to be perpetuated in schools through largely unconscious cultural mores and pedagogies. Gender inequities are deeply rooted in historical, philosophical, and cultural narratives of gender so that we, educators, are ourselves articulations of gender-based narratives. Moreover, the intersectionalities between gender, race, English speaking ability, sexuality, class, religion, ability, poverty etc. greatly exacerbate this problem. Together with their teachers, principals must develop critical self-awareness as well as intentional ways …

Pedagogy Of The Dispersed: A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of The African Diaspora Phenomenon Through The Human And Social Capital Lens, Charles Kivunja, Edward Shizha

Edward Shizha

With its origin in Greek where ‘diaspora’ as a noun means ‘a dispersion’ or as a verb means to ‘scatter about’, the term is used in this paper to refer to the dispersion or scattering of Africans from their original African homeland and now live in countries other than their own. Indeed some Africans have dispersed from their own countries to other countries in Africa. For the purposes of this paper our analysis focuses on Africans who live outside Africa. This paper explores the African diaspora phenomenon starting from the commercial extraction of Africans as resources to serve as inputs …
