New Conceptions Of Scholarship For A New Generation Of Faculty Members, Mary Deane Sorcinelli
Mary Deane Sorcinelli
Scholarship Reconsidered gave us an amplified vision of scholarly work, yet this process of tenure has inhibited the full realization of that vision. This chapter argues that we need to make the tenure process work more effectively and flexibly in order to validate and encourage the multiple types of scholarship Boyer proposes.

Research On Urban Community College Transfer And Retention: The Los Angeles Truccs Project, Linda Serra Hagedorn, Bill Maxwell
Linda Serra Hagedorn
This is a report on the Los Angeles Transfer and Retention of Urban Community College Students (TRUCCS) Project, which tracks approximately 5,000 community college students from nine campuses of the Los Angeles Community College District in order to gather information on retention and persistence. The project also investigates urban community college student patterns of reverse transfer, remediation, and social integration. The report indicates that the student ethnic and age diversity in the TRUCCS project reflects the total ethnic and age diversity of the Los Angeles Community College District, with Hispanic and African-American students representing a majority of the total enrollment. …

Amy Strage
“It Takes a Valley” is a teacher preparation program that aims to recruit and retain teachers in schools that serve students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. This program provides future teachers with extensive early teaching experience and chances to develop strategies for success in this type of educational context. The theoretical basis for this program's approach is examined, some key aspects of the program are considered, the initial evaluation of the program and the lessons learned to date are explored, the challenges and growing pains encountered by the program are examined, and the implications of the program for teacher education are …

Alternative Discourses In Southeast Asia, Syed Farid Alatas
Alternative Discourses In Southeast Asia, Syed Farid Alatas
farid alatas
This article brings into focus the question of alternative discourses in the social sciences. Alternative discourses are works that attempt to debunk ideas that have become entrenched in the social sciences, partly as a result of colonialism and the continuing Eurocentrism in the social sciences. In the context of Southeast Asia as well as much of the non-Western world, alternative discourses in the social sciences could also be referred to collectively as counter- Eurocentric social science. This paper discusses the emergence of alternative discourses in Southeast Asia, the defintion of alternative discourse, and the future of these discourses in our …
Rights Of Inequality: Rawlsian Justice, Equal Opportunity, And The Status Of The Family, Justin Schwartz
Rights Of Inequality: Rawlsian Justice, Equal Opportunity, And The Status Of The Family, Justin Schwartz
Justin Schwartz
Is the family subject to principles of justice? In A Theory of Justice, John Rawls includes the (monogamous) family along with the market and the government as among the "basic institutions of society" to which principles of justice apply. Justice, he famously insists, is primary in politics as truth is in science: the only excuse for tolerating injustice is that no lesser injustice is possible. The point of the present paper is that Rawls doesn't actually mean this. When it comes to the family, and in particular its impact on fair equal opportunity (the first part of the the Difference …

Bringing Political Theory To University Governance: The University Of California And The Universidad Nacional Autónoma De México, Brian Pusser, Imanol Ordorika

While important normative work has been produced on various aspects of governance, including trusteeship (Cheit, Holland and Taylor, 1991; Kerr and Gade, 1989), institutional autonomy (Berdahl, 1990), and governance struc- tures (Richardson ct al., 1998) little theoretical inquiry has been devoted to two essential questions of governance: how arc key decisions actually made in the postsecondary sector, and who makes them? In order to advance our unuer- stanuing of higher education governance and policy-making, it is first essential to restore a political theoretical framework to the study of higher cuucation organizations. To that end we begin with an historical review …

Multilateral Agencies And Higher Education Reform In Latin America, Roberto Rodríguez-Gómez, Armando Alcántara
Roberto Rodríguez-Gómez
During the last decade, the debate over higher education took up a significant space on the agendas of various international agencies, including multilateral development banks and other intergovernmental agencies. This fact points to the importance of the subject within a broader discussion that refers to national development projects and their articulation within the new international economic and political order. In this context, the purpose of this article is to discern the principal lines of argument at work and their implications for the transformation of higher education in Latin America. To this end, we have chosen four cases that we consider …

In light of shifting African American student enrollment patterns at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), this study examines admissions and recruitment materials mailed to prospective students from 13 HBCUs. The material was analyzed using factors from the Search stage of Hossler and Gallagher’s (1987) college choice model. Results revealed variations in quality among public and private Black Colleges. The significance of these results, specific recommendations for recruitment, and implications for future research are also included.

Technical texts, i.e., technical literature proper (data sheets, user documentation, scientific publications, etc.), as well as the whole range of medical and legal texts, have one feature in common: Their authors make generous use of: a) words not in common usage, e.g., dongle (a computer hardware device that prevents unauthorized use of protected software); and/or b) words that are in common usage but have a slightly, or even totally, different meaning in the special language, e.g., bug (in the general sense, this means a small insect, but in the computer software field, this is a small defect in the code …
