Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The Vocational Assessment Center is under the direction of the Vocational, Adult and Community Education Department in the Martin County (Florida) School District. Employability skills workshops, vocational assessment, testing, and career exploration activities were available at the center. A special concern of the counselors at the center was assisting single parents and displaced homemakers in gaining the necessary skills and confidence to compete for high-wage high demand occupations. Each year for the last four years a federal grant was written and funded targeting this specific population. Follow-up of this group was of crucial importance for evaluation. feedback and funding.

Lowering Staff Turnover Rate By Recruiting And Employing Senior Citizens In A Small Child Care Center, Mary B. Kuhman
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The problem addressed in this practicum concerned the high staff turnover rate in a small child care facility. The goal of the writer was to reduce the staff turnover rate and the staff certification expense. The solution chosen was to implement an intergenerational program in which senior citizens were hired as paid employees. These persons were recruited from a neighborhood senior citizen center following advertisement for two available positions. After recruitment, they worked with other staff members as teacher assistants while completing their training requirements. The training consisted of familiarizing themselves with the children and the center's policy and procedures. …

A Hypertext Computer Assisted Instruction (Cai) Program: Teaching The Disk Operating System (Dos) To Community College Students, David D. Blanchard
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Students entering beginning IBM-compatible computer courses have a wide range of experience in the Disk Operating System (DOS). A large number have little or no knowledge and are very apprehensive and anxious. Others have experience and are bored when the rest of the class is learning DOS. A hypertext computer-assisted instruction (CAI) program was developed to teach DOS to a beginning class with J variety of backgrounds. The CAI program was demonstrated in class, and the students used the program in a computer lab, The results showed that more students passed a DOS proficiency test after eight weeks using the …

Abilene Intercollegiate School of Nursing (AISN) is faced with the task of educating nurses who acquire their undergraduate courses from three different universities. AISN is a consortium of these three institutions of higher education. Just as these students are varied in their first years of higher education, they do not approach. learning situations in the same manner. They differ in the ways they perceive, organize, and relate experiences. It is likely that they respond differently to a particular instructional approach. Little investigation has been done at AISN to define and use specific methods to present relevant information.
The study is …

The Causes Affecting Attrition Among Industrial Technology Students And A Proposed Program To Increase Retention At Monroe County Community College, Cynthia S. Riedel
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The purpose of this Major Applied Research Project was to (1) conduct an investigation of students majoring in the industrial technology division to determine the forces which influence attrition and persistence; (2) design a retention program to counter Pie attrition problem; and (3) suggest an implementation plan to increase technology retention at Monroe County Community College. With an increasing attrition problem, decision makers at MCCC supported this study with the hope that a program could be developed to increase technology retention.
Six basic research questions were examined: 1. What factors are associated with at-risk industrial technology students at MCCC? 2. …
Development Of A Remedial Medication Administration Program For Newly Hired Nurses At A Veterans Administration Medical Center In Central Florida, Diane M. Lipe
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The purpose of this study was to determine the medication administration proficiency of newly hired nurses at a large Department of Veterans Affairs (D.V.A.) Medical Center located in Bay Pines, Florida and to design a remedial education program in medication administration which would effectively meet specific deficiencies found in this population. Legal and professional mandates require proficiency in this domain of practice, yet nursing literature and recent experience by D.V.A. nurse educators have raised serious concern regarding the adequacy of nurses' proficiency in this area.
Research questions include: 1. What is the medication administration proficiency of newly hired nurses at …

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Sixteen Academic Variables On Completion And Noncompletion Of An Associate Degree Nursing Program, Karon Titus Overmeyer
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The continuing decline in the number of applicants to nursing programs combined with the need to ensure that graduates are competent has made essential the development of reliable predictors that more fully assess the potential of all individuals in the restricted applicant pool. The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to determine which admission and continuation criteria used by Broward Community College's (BCC) Nursing Program could be used as predictors for completion of the program and (2) to determine those students who are at-risk of not completing the nursing program. The independent variables for the study were five admission …

Dialogue Journal Writing In Kindergarten And First Grade Classrooms, Eileen B. Lopez
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The lack of daily journal writing opportunities for kindergarten and first grade students was addressed through a series of in-service sessions designed to encourage teachers to provide daily opportunities for journal writing as required by county guidelines. In order to make the activity more effective, teachers were asked to give students written feedback. A parent orientation session provided parents an overview of the goals and objectives of the daily journal writing project. Success of the project was measured through classroom observations, reviews of students’ journals, comparison of students’ pre and post samples and a parent survey. Results indicated that students …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The absence of an effective work study program to provide community based work experience for a high school transition class and the effectiveness of job trainer training procedures was remedied by the development and implementation of a plan to include five educable and trainable transition students and one job trainer at a community work environment. The work study program developed in-class job readiness skills along on-site work experiences at community based work environments to prepare students for societal productive coexistence after graduation. The program also focused on the selection, training, and supervision of a job trainer who exhibited competency in …

Organizing A Program To Increase Fitness Levels In Fourth Grade Students, Warren A. Bell
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
A high percentage of students have scored low on health-related fitness tests in the areas of Upper Body Strength and Cardio- Respiratory Endurance. Utilizing the Chrysler/AAU Fitness Program (1989) to screen the students, the author developed a means to supplement physical education classes once or twice per week to improve fourth graders’ fitness levels. After developing and implementing a Runner’s Club and a Fitness Course that was supervised by the fourth grade classroom teachers on an every-other-day basis for 10 weeks, the author was able to significantly improve health related fitness test scores, Appendices include Turkey Trot Guidelines, Pre-Test Fitness …

Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC) nurses were experiencing stress caused by Increased severity of patient illness, increased use of sophisticated medical and support technology and the nursing shortage. ORMC nurse preceptors experienced the additional stress of orienting vast numbers of new nursing employees each year. At the time of this study, there were minimal extrinsic rewards for being a preceptor. Two problems were identified in this study. One was a lack of motivation and educational expertise among many ORMC nurses to assume and/or continue the role of nurse preceptor. The second was an apparently high attrition rate among registered and …

Developing An Action Learning Approach To Teaching Science To Kindergarten Students In A Marine Wetlands Environment, Jeanne Mills
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum was designed to introduce kindergarten students to marine science through a hands-on process approach in a wetland environment. The primary goal was to immerse young children in science through active experimental learning rather than secondhand knowledge. The second aim was to offer young children the opportunity to study the wetlands and to see firsthand how fragile the world's ecosystems are so that they may realize the importance of maintaining them.
After the writer verified the need for this type of learning through surveys, she researched the literature, wrote her curriculum, created a teaching book, developed accompanying activities, held …
