Unfit For Slavery: A Qualitative Exploration Of African American Male Perceptions Of Persistence And Academic Achievement At A Midwest Public Community College, Lavada Rebecca Rice
Dissertations
While African American males enrolled in community colleges, persistence and graduation rates remained low compared to all other demographics. Educational literature and research examining the performance of African American male students in community colleges was scarce (Bush & Bush, 2010). The most recent research focused on African American male students in the community college systems was 2010 (Harris & Wood, 2013) and focused on ways to keep African American male students enrolled. Ignoring the socio-ecological factors can affect decisions to stay enrolled. The researcher believed examining institutional and socio-ecological influences might be necessary to improve the persistence and academic achievement …

Relational Leadership: Reconceptualizing How School Districts Address Teacher Attrition, Nila J. Burt, Joseph R. Jones
Journal of Educational Leadership in Action
American education is in crisis. Teacher attrition rates are astronomical and continue to rise post-pandemic. In his executive summary, Pelfrey (2020), a policy and research analyst in the Georgia governor's office, revealed that new teachers are abandoning their careers at steadily increasing rates within the first five years of service. As such, we must further examine teacher retention and the influence of school administrators. In this capacity, this study utilized a qualitative methodology to examine teacher attrition in a high school in Georgia. Specifically, narrative inquiry provided the framework to examine the lived experiences of teachers in this southern school. …

National Transfer Credit System Can Increase Students Retention In Public Universities: System Thinking Leadership Perspective, Sevinj Iskandarova, Margaret F. Sloan
Journal of Educational Leadership in Action
Transfer students often lose credits that they have earned for completing courses at previous institutions and face other complications during lateral transitions between public four-year institutions because the current process of transferring credits is complicated, which raises barriers to affordable, accessible, and accountable national-level transfers. More research is needed to understand how the transfer policy could best be adapted to create an improved, transparent, and seamless transfer process. This mixed methods study conducted in the United States of America explores how national transfer system policies across states are functioning, and determine what states are doing regarding postsecondary transfer policy and …

Many claim that elementary school teachers fail to teach children to adequately read, but few ask teachers why this problem persists. This study illuminates the voices of the teachers as they shared their perceptions of which factors supported or hindered their best practices in literacy instruction. Forty-four elementary school teachers across the United States responded to an open-ended questionnaire detailing the people, structures, political, and fiscal supports and barriers to what they perceived as a comprehensive approach to literacy instruction. Using diagnostic and prognostic frames to structure teachers' responses, findings from this study provide direct implications for administration at the …

High School Curriculum Outline And Unit Plan For Unit 3: Researching And Referencing For The Comparative Study, Kendra Bomar
Theses
Before beginning the International Baccalaureate Art program, most high school students will have already spent a significant amount of time studying a variety of art genres and will have a solid understanding of art terminology and methods. This is because the program is designed to build upon prior knowledge and experience. This is true for the majority of schools that participate in the IB program. It is common practice for educational institutions that provide tough programs to insist that students complete prerequisite coursework before they are allowed to enroll in the challenging programs that the institution provides. This is done …

Using A Forward Chain To Teach Intruder Training To Children With Autism, Megan Clark, Robbie Hanson
Using A Forward Chain To Teach Intruder Training To Children With Autism, Megan Clark, Robbie Hanson
Theses
Safety drills, such as tornado, fire and intruder drills are mandated in schools across the United States. These drills require prolonged compliance by students and are commonly taught using verbal instructions. However, individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), may struggle with complex routines, attending to verbal stimuli, or complying for long durations. Thus, when children with ASD transition to school these drills may be difficult for them to complete and little to no research has been conducted on this topic. Thus, the current study utilized a concurrent multiple baseline design across participants to examine the use of a forward chain …

The Relationship Between Social Support And Distress Following Perinatal Loss, Nicole Smith, Caitlin Matsche, Denise Fattic, Agata Freedle
2023 Student Academic Showcase
Perinatal loss can be a traumatic event associated with high levels of distress and potentially PTSD (Berry, 2022). Strong social support is crucial in trauma recovery, though it is often counterproductive following perinatal loss (Meyer, 2016). Recent quantitative research done by Dr. Agata Freedle has shown that lack of adequate, culturally sensitive social support can contribute to elevated levels of PTSD. The specific experiences of perinatally bereaved women have not been captured in this data. Further exploration of this relationship to include the lived experiences of women is needed. The purpose of this study is to qualitatively explore how women …

Education in the United States has changed significantly since its onset. Due to these changes, there is an increased need for social-emotional skills for success in school and in life. The study centered on how focusing intermediate elementary school students on improving their behavior could influence their academic achievement. Though there is much literature on social-emotional skills, self-efficacy, student agency, goal-setting, and academic achievement, few researchers have conducted studies to connect these concepts. In this study, students assessed their current behavioral skills using the mySAEBRS (Illuminate Education, n.d.). Using the results, students set improvement goals in one of three behavioral …
