Teachers’ Perceptions Of Student Voice Of Students With Disabilities In Leader In Me And Non-Leader In Me Schools, Rachel A. Farmer
Ed.D. Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to investigate the opportunities for student voice of students with disabilities in Leader in Me and Non-Leader in Me schools. Utilizing a qualitative interpretive approach, I interviewed twelve participants in an urban school district in Tennessee regarding the use of student voice in the classroom and school environment. I utilized a questionnaire to gather demographic information and to solicit participants and an interview protocol to analyze data from interviews. Six themes emerged from the interviews shedding light on how students with disabilities have the opportunity for student voice in the classroom and school. The …
English Language Learner Teacher Support Changes During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Inna Slisher
English Language Learner Teacher Support Changes During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Inna Slisher
Ed.D. Dissertations
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, ELL teachers focused their culturally responsive instruction and supports through creating meaning, promoting academic and social success, and empowering students and families. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic affected almost all countries and more than 50 million people around the world. The purpose of this study was to investigate how ELL teachers’ support for students in a southeastern school district, IISD, changed during the COVID-19 pandemic and ELL teachers’ perceptions of how this change may have impacted ELLs during the COVID-19 pandemic. This qualitative, basic interpretive design using a questionnaire provided me with opportunities to examine how …
Experiencing Intellectually Stimulating K-12 Principal Actions: A Phenomenological Study, John Parham
Experiencing Intellectually Stimulating K-12 Principal Actions: A Phenomenological Study, John Parham
Ed.D. Dissertations
K-12 principals are held increasingly accountable for school success, yet their direct impact on students is negligible. Principals must thus work to positively impact their teachers in order to indirectly impact student achievement. Transformational leaders are able to utilize intellectual stimulation in order to impact those who work under them. The data for this study was collected through qualitative means, with eight K-12 teachers, representing two school districts in East Tennessee, participating. The findings in this study indicated that principals were able to provide intellectually stimulating experiences for teachers without having to bring in outside resources or even add extra …
Certified Educators’ Perceptions Of Response To Intervention And Instruction In East Tennessee Public High Schools, Katharine Messer
Certified Educators’ Perceptions Of Response To Intervention And Instruction In East Tennessee Public High Schools, Katharine Messer
Ed.D. Dissertations
Since the early 2000s, federal, state, and local lawmakers and educators have worked to combat the wait to fail mentality and support higher student grade level academic achievements. Educators were tasked with finding teaching methods that better served academically struggling students, some of whom had specified learning disabilities. Federal laws created Response to Intervention instruction in all grade levels, in which educators provided students additional instructional support. During my study, I found little existing literature focused on Response to Intervention instruction in high school grade levels. The purpose of this qualitative interpretive study was to examine certified educators’ perceptions of …
Teacher Perceptions Of Student Learning Environments As A Result Of Virtual Learning In Tennessee Rural High Schools, Kimberly Mcintyre
Teacher Perceptions Of Student Learning Environments As A Result Of Virtual Learning In Tennessee Rural High Schools, Kimberly Mcintyre
Ed.D. Dissertations
After the COVID‑19 pandemic came to the United States in March 2020, teachers and educational leaders looked to virtual learning as a way for students to overcome learning challenges and improve educational experiences for students. Stakeholders were met with conflicting claims about virtual learning. Proponents of virtual learning claimed virtual teaching and learning platforms strengthened education because they provided additional tools when traditional classroom settings were impossible. Opponents claimed virtual learning resulted in learning loss, therefore failing to improve student learning. In this qualitative interpretive study of a rural school system in Tennessee, using instrumental, semi‑structured interviews, I uncovered the …

Sense Of Belonging And Association With Academic Achievement Of Hispanic And Non-Hispanic High School Students, Mary Webster
Ed.D. Dissertations
The purpose of this quantitative, nonexperimental, correlational research study was to investigate the extent that Hispanics in grade 11 in a rural high school in Tennessee experienced a sense of belonging and the correlation, if any, between sense of belonging and academic achievement on the state English I and English II standardized tests. I selected Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs as the theoretical framework to focus the nonexperimental, correlational study. I collected student perceptions for sense of belonging using the Psychological Sense of School Membership scale, designed to measure perceptions of psychological membership and sense of belonging, for students in grade …
Reflective Practice: A Qualitative Study Of A Teacher Leader Program, Mark Herron
Reflective Practice: A Qualitative Study Of A Teacher Leader Program, Mark Herron
Ed.D. Dissertations
Because of the increase of the rigor of state standards and of accountability, the Lincoln County School District sought to become a part of the state Teacher Leader Network during the 2016-2017 school year as a way to provide teachers best practices for improving the culture and climate of their schools, participating in collaborative professional learning, and helping students be more successful on high-stakes end-of-course assessments. As a result of their efforts, the Lincoln County Learning Leader program was born, which led to implementing the professional learning community process in each school as the vehicle to accomplish the program’s objectives. …
Elementary English Language Arts Demonstration Classrooms: Professional Development In Action, Danielle Hamilton
Elementary English Language Arts Demonstration Classrooms: Professional Development In Action, Danielle Hamilton
Ed.D. Dissertations
Illiteracy impacts the society of the United States socially, economically, physically and mentally. The inability to read has been linked to grim outcomes such as poverty, criminal activity, and poor health. By 2020, the term science of reading had gained traction in the educational realm rather than being isolated knowledge in the cognitive psychological research field. Even though research has shown the most effective methods for teaching reading, teachers in the United States were not aware of the convergent scientific evidence. School districts have the responsibility and moral imperative to provide effective professional development for elementary teachers to instruct students …
Teacher Perceptions Of The Impact Of Vertical Non-Permanent Surfaces In Mathematics Classrooms, Michelle Mikes
Teacher Perceptions Of The Impact Of Vertical Non-Permanent Surfaces In Mathematics Classrooms, Michelle Mikes
Ed.D. Dissertations
The historical, traditional mathematics classroom of students sitting in rows receiving information from the teacher and working individually was still prevalent in the 21st century. Many teachers had resorted to student-centered activities to engage passive students, but the minimal progress of math achievement of United States students denoted a need for the reform of the traditional mathematics classroom. In this multi-site, multi-case qualitative study, I explored teacher perceptions of the use of vertical non-permanent surfaces on the impact of engagement, including the use of formative assessment and feedback with mathematics students, and the lesson structure of 360 Degree Math. The …
Teachers' Perceptions Of Efficacy Development In Elementary Public And Private Schools, Amy Henderson
Teachers' Perceptions Of Efficacy Development In Elementary Public And Private Schools, Amy Henderson
Ed.D. Dissertations
Teacher efficacy has been studied by researchers since 1976. As researchers discovered the breadth of impact of teacher efficacy, the study of the topic increased, and researchers identified positive effects of teacher self-efficacy. Considering these influences on the educational system, researchers sought to study all aspects of efficacy development to replicate positive experiences for teacher efficacy in a large number of schools. A gap in the literature existed regarding efficacy development across unique school settings. Through this qualitative, basic interpretive study, I sought to fill the gap in the literature around teacher efficacy development by adding to the base of …

Third Grade Students' Occupational Aspirations And Perceptions Of Parents' Career Satisfaction, Tiffany Corum
Ed.D. Dissertations
At the time of this writing, little research had been completed on the occupational aspirations of students and students’ perceptions of their parents’ career satisfaction. I completed a qualitative study in which I compared the occupational aspirations of 14 third-grade students, 7 girls and 7 boys, from a low socio-economic school and 14 third-grade students, 7 girls and 7 boys, from a high socio-economic school within the southeastern region of the United States. I also compared these students’ perceptions of their parents’ career satisfaction. I conducted one-on-one interviews with students in which they answered questions about their occupational aspirations and …
Self-Efficacy Supports Of Third Grade Reading Teachers In The Highest Reading Performing Schools In Georgi, Tami Mcclain
Self-Efficacy Supports Of Third Grade Reading Teachers In The Highest Reading Performing Schools In Georgi, Tami Mcclain
Ed.D. Dissertations
Students needed to be able to read in elementary school to be successful in school and in life. Meanwhile, teachers graduated from teacher preparation colleges and not able to teach reading once they were in their own classrooms. Teachers who developed self-efficacy in the teaching of reading were the best teachers to teach reading. The purpose of this qualitative interpretive study was to determine third grade reading teachers’ perceptions of how school leaders, professional development, and instructional coaching supported the development of self-efficacy in reading instruction. I conducted this study in three schools in a school district with the highest …
The Role Paradox Of Middle School Assistant Principals In Tennessee: Self-Perception Versus Teacher Perception, Jarrod Pendergraft
The Role Paradox Of Middle School Assistant Principals In Tennessee: Self-Perception Versus Teacher Perception, Jarrod Pendergraft
Ed.D. Dissertations
Research was limited when it came to the roles and responsibilities of middle school assistant principals. Even less research was dedicated to how middle school teachers perceived the roles and responsibilities of their assistant principals. Due to the overall lack of research regarding both facets, further research was necessary to form a better understanding of middle school assistant principals’ roles and responsibilities as compared to teachers’ perceptions. Middle school assistant principals and teachers from one Tennessee county responded to questionnaires to explore the relationship between middle school assistant principals’ perceptions of their roles and responsibilities and the teachers’ perceptions of …
An Examination Of Motivational Influences On Professional Choice, Perceived Preparedness, And Retention Of Alternatively Certified Teachers Of Career, Technical, And Agriculture Education In Northeast Georgia, Jonathan Stribling
Ed.D. Dissertations
Alternative routes to teacher certification have been utilized as a way to address the Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education teacher shortage, and this abbreviated path to a teaching career has attracted current educators from the industries for which they are trained. Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education teachers who have entered the teaching profession after prior industry experience intentionally chose, and continue to choose, to teach. There is a gap in the extant literature as to why. In this qualitative interpretive study, I examined the motivational influences on professional choice, perceived level of preparedness, and retention of alternatively certified teachers …
Teacher Perceptions Of Curriculum-Driven Technology After Working With Instructional Technology Coaches In Middle Schools In One Southeastern School District, Julie Pepperman
Ed.D. Dissertations
The use of curriculum-driven technology in K-12 public schools was mandated by federal law. School and district leaders were required to provide curriculum-driven technology professional development and support to teachers. The use of the curriculum-driven technology coach was an option some schools chose to meet the curriculum-driven technology professional development requirements and needs of their teachers. The purpose of this research was to explore one school district’s middle school teachers’ perceptions of the importance of curriculum-driven technology and their perceived self-efficacy in using curriculum-driven technology in instructional practice after collaborating with a curriculum-driven technology coach. This qualitative study was conducted …
Middle School Teachers’ Perceptions Of Professional Development For Blended Learning Implementation, Jessica Wear
Middle School Teachers’ Perceptions Of Professional Development For Blended Learning Implementation, Jessica Wear
Ed.D. Dissertations
As technology use in the classroom became more prevalent, so did the questions of how to effectively integrate technology into instructional practice. From this rise in questions about how to effectively integrate technology, the term blended learning emerged. Blended learning serves as a description of practices for educators to effectively implement and integrate technology in classrooms. Through an adult learning framework, I used a qualitative interpretive research design to examine middle school teachers’ perceptions of professional development for implementing blended learning. I sampled 32 middle school teachers who completed questionnaires, and I interviewed three teachers based on their responses to …
Perceptions Of Factors Leading To Forensics-Drama Coaching Efficacy, Anthony Wooley
Perceptions Of Factors Leading To Forensics-Drama Coaching Efficacy, Anthony Wooley
Ed.D. Dissertations
Participation in nonacademic activities that focus on creative skill improvement, like forensics‑drama, can increase high school students’ intrinsic desire to learn. Intrinsic motivation to learn resulted in academic success at the secondary and collegiate levels and career success at the professional level because the students felt confident in their abilities. Because the forensics-drama coach was the primary factor affecting students’ forensics-drama abilities, a greater understanding of the sources of forensics-drama coaching efficacy was required to discover how to better serve the students. Ten forensics-drama coaches in the state of Tennessee participated in this qualitative interpretive study in which they were …
Stakeholder Perceptions Of Student Opportunity In Consolidated Rural High Schools, Bradley Smith
Stakeholder Perceptions Of Student Opportunity In Consolidated Rural High Schools, Bradley Smith
Ed.D. Dissertations
Since the early 1900s, educational leaders and policymakers looked to consolidation as a way for rural schools and school systems to overcome financial challenges and improve the educational experiences for students. Stakeholders were met with conflicting claims about the effects of school and system consolidation. Proponents of consolidation claimed a consolidation would provide students with more curricular and extracurricular options by way of financial savings experienced from economies of scale, while opponents of consolidation claimed the consolidation would not relieve financial stress but would risk more behavioral problems and a loss of community identity. In this case study of a …

Ed.D. Dissertations
In this qualitative study, I examined teachers’ perceptions of the influence of high stakes testing on instructional practices and student learning and engagement in middle schools in rural Southwest Virginia. Fourteen middle school teachers from three middle schools completed questionnaires, and seven teachers submitted lesson plans as part of this study. I analyzed the data and determined teachers expressed negative perceptions of the effects of high stakes testing on student learning and engagement. Teachers also stated high stakes testing limited instructional practices used in classrooms. Teachers perceived current instructional practices were not conducive for active student learning and engagement; however, …
Novice, Alternatively Licensed Career And Technical Education Teachers' Perceptions Of Professional Development, Desiree Seay
Novice, Alternatively Licensed Career And Technical Education Teachers' Perceptions Of Professional Development, Desiree Seay
Ed.D. Dissertations
In this qualitative study, I address novice, alternatively licensed Career Technical Education (CTE) teachers’ perceptions of professional development support in a southeastern school district in the state of Tennessee. The lack of tailored professional development opportunities created issues for CTE teachers because of the complexity of their teaching responsibilities. Research on effective methods of professional development for beginning CTE teachers existed; however, there were few research studies on program implementations and their effectiveness. To gather data, I used a Google survey to establish an initial, two-tiered criterion for participation, and participants who met the criteria participated in one-on-one interviews. Specifically, …

Factors Influencing Dual Enrolled Students To Pursue Postsecondary Career And Technical Education, Debbie Petree
Ed.D. Dissertations
Employers struggle to find employees for middle skills jobs in computer technology, nursing, advanced manufacturing and other fields requiring postsecondary technical education. The number of students pursuing postsecondary education does not meet the needs of employers. This study examined the influence of economic, social/cultural, institutional, dual credit participation, and academic variables upon students’ intentions to enroll in program options at a technical college. The study was conducted with the dual enrolled or former dual enrolled students at a small rural technical college in East Tennessee with a sample size of 75. Linear regression was used to determine the relationship between …
Teacher Perceptions Of Funds Of Knowledge In Central Appalachia, Kiplyn Collins
Teacher Perceptions Of Funds Of Knowledge In Central Appalachia, Kiplyn Collins
Ed.D. Dissertations
This study examined teacher perceptions of their use of funds of knowledge pedagogy in classrooms in two counties in central Appalachia. The funds of knowledge theory was originally applied to the migrant Mexican American population and then transitioned to other minority populations but has rarely been examined within the Appalachian region, nor the central Appalachian region specifically. Since the President’s Appalachian Regional Commission in 1964, the Appalachian region has been recognized by its financial struggles, low employment rates, and low educational achievement. While numerous researchers have examined the problems of education in the area, few studies have sought methods for …
Tennessee Promise Mentoring And Its Impact On Social Capital Of Disadvantaged Students, Tara Laroy
Tennessee Promise Mentoring And Its Impact On Social Capital Of Disadvantaged Students, Tara Laroy
Ed.D. Dissertations
Disadvantaged students (i.e., students characterized by first generation status, low socio-economic status, or racial minority) in the United States enrolled in college at higher rates but still faced a significant college graduation gap. Research has shown that a close, personal relationship with a mentor can increase the social capital of disadvantaged students in post-secondary education. The Tennessee Promise Program was a scholarship program for high school students, designed to remove the financial barriers while also supplying them with an adult mentor to guide them through the college process. In this qualitative study, the researcher aimed to investigate the experiences of …

The purpose of this research was to identify teachers’ perceptions of barriers to math achievement below Grade 10, if any, to determine which, if any, of the identified barriers teachers reported, and to determine which, if any, previous recommendations for positive changes in mathematics classrooms teachers reported, as well as identify any teacher reports of resistance to change. I conducted research on 19 participants by collecting questionnaires online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were teachers of mathematics from Grade 4 through Grade 8. I compared participants’ responses to literature-based components using predetermined coding along with emergent coding to identify …
Balancing Act: How Does An Interdisciplinary Art Unit Affect Student Self-Efficacy In A Stem School?, Cindy Hankins-Koppel
Balancing Act: How Does An Interdisciplinary Art Unit Affect Student Self-Efficacy In A Stem School?, Cindy Hankins-Koppel
Ed.D. Dissertations
Abstract
Educators who use interdisciplinary methods in the classroom need consistent strategies to teach STEM content, and methods to help students increase self-efficacy. The focus on cognitive gains in STEM studies limits the number of students who pursue a foundation of STEM and 21st century skills to adapt to technological advancements for their futures. Student self-efficacy, perception of personal abilities, has become more critical as individuals need a range of academic and personal skills to adapt and persist in future endeavors. Social stereotypes and familial interests influence an individual's perception of their abilities to pursue a career in STEM from …
