Ann (Stroink) and David Skillrud share their reasons for choosing IWU. They are both members of the class of 1976, Biology and Chemistry majors, respectively, and SIU Medical students at the time of the interview.

Ann transferred in as a second semester Freshman from a large school and cites her interest in being taught by PhDs as one reason. She enjoyed being challenged in her science classes and also enjoyed classes in the Humanities and Art History and enjoyed taking Voice lessons in the School of Music.

Deets, Class of 1973, is a Wisconsin attorney at the time of this interview. He discusses how new students are made to feel at home contrasted to his experience at a larger school. He also talks about opportunities to participate outside of things focused on his major. He speaks about student government and co-choir experiences, the relationships established with people from different disciplines, and how his courses prepared him and his peers for law school. He also found the chance to meet other professionals and the close connections he had with faculty and advisors.

Maurice E. Zetterholm, a Law graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University in the Class of 1915, was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha and Pi Kappa Delta fraternities during his time here. He began studying Law at the University of Illinois in 1913, but decided to transfer to Wesleyan on the advice of his mentor, Illinois Supreme Court Justice C.C. Craig.

The film embedded here shows three different activities during Apollo 8 astronaut Col. Frank Borman's visit to campus on March 18, 1969. Initially, Borman is at a press conference with President Robert Eckley (to his right) and Congressman Les Arends (to his left). He is then shown during a ceremony at the Founders' Day Convocation where all three Apollo 8 astronauts (and two other dignitaries) were awarded Honorary Doctorates. In the last segment Borman is shown placing a time capsule in the new Mark Evans Observatory during its dedication ceremony. Several photos of the placement are available online.

Founders’ Day

This recording contains the entire Founders' Day Convocation of March 18, 1969. The main address was given by William Arrowsmith, University of Texas Professor of Classics and University Professor in Arts and Letters. Honorary Doctorates were awarded to Ulysses Kay, Herbert H. Lehman College, CUNY, Professor of Music ; and to astronauts Frank Borman, William A. Anders and James A. Lovell, Jr. (the latter two in absentia). Professor Kay's composition "Like as a Father" was played at this event. It was commissioned by the Collegiate Choir for the 1956 Symposium of Contemporary Music.
