Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Despite increased accessibility regarding instructional technology for music education classrooms, an achievement disparity continued to broaden amid COVID-19. When school districts began to close their buildings, curriculum and instruction transitioned to online platforms. Varied student and teacher participation indicated multiple challenges. Experimental virtual learning concluded the 2019–2020 school year and continued in variations through summer 2021. This qualitative historical study examined perspectives concerning teaching during COVID-19 as held by music teachers, secondary band directors, school administrators, and university music educators. Individuals reflected on four periods between 2019–2021. The initial phase detailed instructional and experiential goals for the 2019–2020 school year. …

A Phenomenological Study Of Trauma-Informed Teaching During A Global Education Disruption, Angelique Susan Smith
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this hermeneutical, phenomenological study described the experience of university educators using trauma-informed instructional practices during a global education disruption for university educators at Southeast University (pseudonym). The theory guiding this study is Richardson’s metatheory of resilience and resiliency (which describes an individual’s natural flow between homeostasis, through disruption, and adjunct to the disruption as part of the natural order of adaptation. The study addresses the following questions: How do university educators describe their experiences with trauma-informed teaching during a global education disruption? What formal strategies have university educators implemented to build social and emotional skills for students …

The COVID-19 pandemic is a worldwide disruptor that impacts the foundation of education as professionals know it. The structural soundness and stability of the nation’s public education system was on display, exposing the varying antiquated practices in place and the inability of many school districts to pivot to a digital platform as the nation’s public schools closed their school buildings to K-12 students. Public K-12 schools did not have readily available systems nor protocols in place to continue educating the nation’s kids. Parents, grandparents, older siblings, etc, became the teachers of these children as the teachers attempted to educate via …

Infusing Covid-19 Into An Undergraduate Parasitology Research Course, Alexa Von Dohlen
SoTL Commons Conference
The COVID-19 pandemic is a global event that has impacted both how and what educators teach. An unexpected outcome of the pandemic was the ability to enhance student understanding of public health through discussion of the novel coronavirus. Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CURE) provide students with authentic research experiences in the framework of an undergraduate course. Here the reconfiguration of the Parasitology Research course as an online CURE is discussed. This course included curriculum focused not only on parasite diagnostics, but also how it relates to diagnosing COVID-19 with the aim of helping students become scientifically prepared citizens.

The Self-Efficacy Of Culturally Responsive Teaching Among Secondary Teachers During Emergency Online Learning, Jo R. Hawke
Theses and Dissertations
The present study used an explanatory-sequential mixed-methods research design to investigate the culturally responsive teaching self-efficacy of secondary teachers during the emergency online learning of 2020. Participants were all teachers in a small urban mid-Atlantic school district. Phase 1 involved the collection of primarily quantitative data, including a measure adapted from Siwatu’s (2007) Culturally Responsive Teaching Self-Efficacy (CRTSE) scale. Quantitative findings informed the selection of six teachers to participate in interviews during the qualitative Phase 2. Interview questions further probed participants’ culturally responsive teaching self-efficacy and how the teachers demonstrated these beliefs in general and specifically during the emergency online …
Using The Campus Environment As A Classroom, Jesse Minor
Using The Campus Environment As A Classroom, Jesse Minor
Faculty Scholarship
University campuses are multi-purpose spaces, with public institution campuses typically hosting a suite of functions serving local communities, including access to libraries and scholarship, adult learning programs, and episodic events such as public health campaigns and tax preparation support. University campuses also provide excellent spaces for activities that enhance and support their educational mission, including open space that can be used for course-based research, inquiry-led projects, methods training in the social and natural sciences, and artistic work. Here, I explain how I have used the UMaine Farmington campus to teach inquiry-based environmental science while providing campus-based service-learning to the community …

Collaboration Literacy In Technical Communication: Using Workplace-Based Teamwork Practices And Technologies To Teach Distributed Knowledge Work, Marcy Bock Eastley
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Workplace changes and the continuing evolution of how we define and practice technical communication require that we consider collaboration in ways we may not have imagined ten, five or even two years ago. The unexpected COVID-19 pandemic pushed our world and collaboration into additional and unanticipated directions. Since one of our responsibilities as educators is to prepare our students for success in the workplace and beyond, we must take a closer look at how we understand and teach collaboration in our classrooms. While collaboration appears in existing technical communication pedagogical models, it has been viewed as an element of social …

How The Covid-19 Pandemic Affected High School Student Mathematical Anxiety During Distance Learning., Ryan Christiansen
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Mathematical anxiety is the stress associated with an insecurity in a student’s own ability to solve a math problem (Beilock & Willingham, 2014). This stress can cause students to perform below their ability and put in motion a dislike for math that can last a lifetime. In the spring of 2020, a sudden interruption in learning, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, caused students to be separated from their teachers, setting up a situation in which students were not as fully supported as usual, and mathematical anxiety potentially increased. The previous research on students being separated from their teachers on …

Virtually Left Behind: The Struggles Of Adapted Physical Education Through Online Learning For Students With Special Needs, Madison Neff
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The focus issue addressed in this Capstone Project is on improving the challenges faced by students with special needs through online modalities of adapted physical education (APE). This is an important issue for students with special needs because they are regressing because of online learning. Students with special needs need a routine and a hands-on learning environment to thrive. It is argued that if teachers, parents, and students meet certain criteria, these challenges can be improved with collaboration. The primary stakeholders' perspectives included one APE teacher and three parents, due to their relevant experience and observations of online APE and …
