The War On Science Grows Deeper, Aldemaro Romero Jr.
The War On Science Grows Deeper, Aldemaro Romero Jr.
Publications and Research
In 2005, journalist Chris Mooney pub- lished a book titled “The Republican War on Science,” which documented the persistent tendency among many conservatives to reject any science that runs contrary to their ideological principles, whether it is climate science, evolutionary biology, or health-related findings that challenge industry interests.
Since then, things have gone worse in cases that remind us of the evilest experiences from recent authoritarian regimes.

A Program Evaluation: Fidelity Of Implementation Of The Wilson Reading System In A Mid-Atlantic School District, Amy H. Stamm
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Reading is at the heart of education and it is the basic skill upon which all others are built. Reading difficulties underlie much of the differences in academic achievement between students with specific learning disabilities in reading and non-disabled students; addressing these challenges when children are young is the key for long-term success (Borman, 2005; Cortiella & Horowitz, 2014; Juel, 1988; National Reading Panel, 2000; Torgesen et al., 2001). The purpose of this mixed methods program evaluation was to provide information to stakeholders about the implementation of the Wilson Reading System in the Mid Atlantic School Division (MASD). By examining …

Redesigning High School Mathematics Curriculum To Enhance College Readiness, Alicia Sanfillippo
Redesigning High School Mathematics Curriculum To Enhance College Readiness, Alicia Sanfillippo
Honors Theses
As a peer tutor and academic coach at Western Michigan University since Fall 2014, I frequently assisted students with mathematics and science courses. Working closely with university students made me realize that many students lacked important skills that I would expect to have been developed prior to college. The skills that I realized students were lacking with respect to math literacy were pattern recognition, the ability to transfer skills, and comprehension and use of mathematical language. I set out to develop these skills as I prepared for an internship in an remedial Algebra II class at Kalamazoo Central High School. …

Deconstructing The Visa: Academic Accommodations And Self-Disclosure, Catherine A. Smith Phd
Deconstructing The Visa: Academic Accommodations And Self-Disclosure, Catherine A. Smith Phd
Proceedings from the Document Academy
College students living with disabilities must disclose, manage, share, and communicate their personal health information in order to receive academic accommodations. The academic gatekeepers to this process are disability services specialists who are important “third parties:” non-family members, non-friends, who work with clinical information to meet the educational needs of their student clients. The author reports the results of the first of several studies of different stakeholders in the academic accommodations process and their attitudes about Personal health records (PHRs). Semistructured interviews were conducted between January and April, 2013, with 17 Disabilities Services (DS) specialists at 2 different public 4-year …
The Effect Of The Sophomore Slump On Students’ Persistence, Vanessa Harris
The Effect Of The Sophomore Slump On Students’ Persistence, Vanessa Harris
Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs
For years, universities have focused on student admissions and getting students through their first-year. According to Schaller (2010), this has resulted in limited literature and research regarding the persistence of sophomore students. From Fall 2010 to Fall 2015, the University of New Mexico (UNM) has experienced a decrease in the persistence of its cohorts from the third to the fifth semester. The existence of this higher attrition rate amongst sophomore students has been associated with a phenomenon known as the “sophomore slump” (Tobolowsky & Cox, 2007). The purpose of this research study was to utilize student retention conceptual models to …

The transformation of professional aspirations throughout and following the certification process and during employment was also analyzed. Also, the appealing factors of a nontraditional administrative preparation program were evaluated. Using heuristic qualitative methods, women graduates of and expedited certification for educational leadership program participated in focus groups and a select group returned for individual interviews. Coding was employed to analyze the data. Our participants entered into school leadership as a result of …

Psychological Distress And Adjustment In College Students, Donovan A. Miles
Psychological Distress And Adjustment In College Students, Donovan A. Miles
Theses and Dissertations
The mental health needs of college students have risen dramatically. According to Kitzrow (2003), an estimated 84% of students who walked into a school counseling centers show significant causes for concern. These students were at high risks because of a variety of psychological distress. The current study sought to understand the multidimensional impact of mental health concerns on students' academic adjustment. Undergraduate students from a northeast public university completed an online survey that comprised of demographic information and two Likert type scales that measured psychological distress and academic adjustment. A Measure Of Perceived Chronic Social Adversity: Development And Validation, Jingqiu Zhang, Cody Ding, Yunglung Tang, Chunyu Zhang, Dong Yang
Education Sciences and Professional Programs Faculty Works
The goal of this study was to develop a measure that assesses negative daily social encounters. Specifically, we examined the concept of perceived chronic social adversity and its assessment, the Perceived Chronic Social Adversity Questionnaire (PCSAQ). The PCSAQ focused on the subjective processing of daily social experiences. Psychometric properties were examined within two non-clinical samples (N = 331 and N = 390) and one clinical sample (N = 86). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported a three-factor model of the PCSAQ, which corresponds to three types of daily social stressors. The final 28-item PCSAQ was shown to be internally consistent, …

Fundations: A Systematic, Research-Based Program To Support Students With Dyslexia Through Tier 1 Instruction, Clarie C. Innocenti
Student Research Submissions
This study explored whether students with dyslexia can be supported through Tier 1 intervention in the general education setting. The school researched in this study chose to purchase a research-based program, FUNdations, which can be implemented at Tier 1, 2, or 3, to support students with language-based disabilities, including dyslexia. Students identified with dyslexia require explicit instruction in phonics and decoding skills. As the Dyslexia Center for Utah (2014) reports, dyslexia is a common language-based disability, affecting one in five learners. This study has examined teachers within the general education setting implementing FUNdations as a research-based intervention to address …

The Effect Of Multiage Grouping On The Self-Esteem Of Students, Aaron Farrant
Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership Dissertations
Educators know children need to learn at a level that is appropriately challenging for them. If the material is too difficult, the children will often feel defeated and stop trying. If the material is too easy, the children will often lose interest and not achieve their potential. Educators also know children learn at different speeds and have different abilities, even children who are the same age. Despite knowing this, the traditional educational model is designed to group children based solely on age and the expectation is for the teacher to differentiate to meet the needs of each individual child in …

Nursing Students’ Knowledge And Attitudes Toward Care Of The Dying, Betsy N. Ward, Elizabeth Nora Ward
Nursing Students’ Knowledge And Attitudes Toward Care Of The Dying, Betsy N. Ward, Elizabeth Nora Ward
Doctorate of Nursing Science Dissertations
Abstract
Most nursing students fear death or care of the dying and thus question their abilities to give compassionate and competent care to patients or families at end-of-life (EOL). Research has shown positive results when students have experiences with dying patients in environments where interdisciplinary palliative and end-of-life practices are delivered. The purpose of this mixed methods comparative group study was to assess BSN students’ knowledge and attitudes toward care of the dying guided by Bandura’s social cognitive theory, which addresses learning under difficult circumstances. Nursing students in a palliative and end-of-life care elective course were compared to students in …
