Conceptualizing Brotherhood And Sisterhood: Does First-Generation And Or Being The First Greek Affiliating Family Member Matter?, Krista Rosner, Kaitlin Frazier, Alexandria Kennedy
Research Methods in Student Affairs (CNS 594)
The research currently in the field regarding brotherhood and sisterhood does not presently take into account first generation students who belong to greek letter societies and organizations. This lack of information results in the opportunity to raise awareness and understanding for this unique student population. First generation students are disproportionately members from underrepresented groups (Engle, 2007). They are also entering college less academically prepared (Choy, 2001). They are also more likely to work while in college (Saenz et al., 2007). These things in combination show inconsistency in the knowledge we have. While we already know that first-generation college students need …

Mediating Teachers As Learners: Conversations From Shared Experience, Paul Watkins
Mediating Teachers As Learners: Conversations From Shared Experience, Paul Watkins

Race to the Top mandates, much like other comprehensive reforms before, focuses on teacher quality and student outcomes. Measuring teacher quality, under Race to the Top reforms, remains a subject of uncertainty, particularly measuring for improvement. This article argues that a central purpose of classroom evaluation is to provide supportive, targeted feedback by differentiating teachers as learners. Drago-Severson and Mezirow offer a framework for adult learning that overlays this theoretical analysis. The three cases explored for this article demonstrate levels of adult learning among teachers, directing the novice to addressing the fully formed transformational learner. The cases promote professional learning …

Educational Assistants Supporting Inclusive Education In Secondary Schools, Amy C. Kipfer
Educational Assistants Supporting Inclusive Education In Secondary Schools, Amy C. Kipfer
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
As school boards in Ontario move towards more inclusive models of learning, more students with disabilities are taught in regular classes instead of self-contained placements. This move results in a role change for the educational assistant (EA). Research is needed to determine the overall framework that will make the use of EAs a more effective practice for student and school. Fifteen EAs working in secondary schools within a school board in southwestern Ontario which was moving to a more inclusive model of education were individually interviewed. EAs chosen for the study had a background of supporting students with developmental disabilities …

Improving Urban Teachers’ Assessment Literacy Through Synergistic Individualized Tutoring And Self-Reflection, Dennis Murphy Odo
Improving Urban Teachers’ Assessment Literacy Through Synergistic Individualized Tutoring And Self-Reflection, Dennis Murphy Odo
Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research
In this reflective piece, I provide an account of one method I am developing for fostering the assessment literacy of pre-service teachers’ in an Master of Arts in Teaching program through individualized tutoring of K-6 learners that also incorporated collaborative reflection. This method was developed for a pre-service teacher education course on individualized literacy assessment and instruction. I incorporated the individualized tutoring sessions and candidate reflection activities to develop candidates’ assessment literacy in response to several observations I made as I taught the class. The teacher research I consulted to address this challenge echoed my experience of the general superficiality …

Empowerment For Whom? Empowerment For What? Lessons From A Participatory Action Research Project, Meagan Call-Cummings, Christine James
Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research
This article sets forth the process through which I, an educator of over 20 years, my research mentor, and my 52 Latino/a students answered questions that were important to us through participatory action research. I start the process by asking if and how I am empowering my students, and they start their own parallel process by asking about their relationships with their White teachers. By engaging in various data collection approaches, including Boal’s (1985) Theatre of the Oppressed and Photovoice, we are all able to answer these questions. I learn that as a teacher I do not empower students; they …

Multimedia Teacher Research, Heather Leaman, Connie Dilucchio
Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research
In this qualitative study, two teacher educators and course instructors in a Masters of Education (M.Ed.) program explored beginning teacher researchers’ use of multimedia to support action research. Fifty-eight teachers (36 in spring 2010 and 22 in spring 2011) completed teacher research as the capstone in their M.Ed. program. Teachers utilized the MERLOT website (Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching) to develop and submit their research as an alternative to traditional paper submission. As teachers conducted their research, course instructors investigated how the teachers’ use of multimedia strengthened or limited their teacher research work. Data from teacher researchers …

A Book Review – Digging Deeper Into Action Research: A Teacher Inquirer’S Field Guide, Jim R. Carlson
Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research
Digging Deeper into Action Research proves itself a handy companion for practitioners embarking on the journey of action research. The chapters are organized in logical order, beginning with a brief historical overview of teacher research and its critical contribution to the national dialogue on education. Dana frames educational research as highly contextualized, reminding readers that “outside experts,” those removed from the day-to-day operations of school, have historically set the terms for what counts as research in education (Cochran-Smith & Lytle, 1993).

Teacher Candidates’ Learning Gains: The Tale Of Two Co-Teachers, Hillary Merk, Melanie Betz, Colleen O' Mara
Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research
Co-teaching during the student teaching experience has been given increased attention among researchers and teacher educators. Co-teaching facilitates an apprenticeship arrangement that encourages modeling of classroom practice for the candidate and provides a chance to implement directly what is being learned. This qualitative study explored teacher candidates’ learning gains using the co-teaching model for student teaching. Teacher candidates were able to see more clearly the dynamics of how a classroom works and the process by which teachers plan lessons, implement curriculum, and manage the many duties of a classroom teacher.

You Cannot Afford Not To Understand Me: Adhd As Difference, Not Disability, Lucia Guarino, Whitney Rapp
Education Faculty/Staff Publications
Support for children with ADHD/ADD has grown in recent years in an effort to help them become more planful, organized and focused, like their logical-sequential peers. Personal experiences are shared to challenge this as a goal worth pursuing and to illustrate the harm that results from attempts to replace perceived weaknesses and disability with socially-constructed strengths. Ways to celebrate and nurture all minds are shared.
As a result of this presentation, participants will:
1. Identify the characteristics of students who are labeled as ADHD/ADD; the characteristics of logical-sequential processing; and explain that the value placed on one set of these …

A Depiction Of Women In Tennessee With Low Literacy Skills And Their Access To Higher Education And Employment, Rebecca Puig
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This phase one study was conducted using qualitative research methods in order to describe to policymakers and local literacy program experts more completely the current challenges and needs some adult women in Tennessee with low-literacy skills face when pursing higher education or a professional career. In turn, such information can assist them in better identifying appropriate resources and interventions to serve these women.
Data were collected through a cross-case analysis of two individual case studies and five interviews with three adult learners and two literacy program experts. Artifacts (e.g., flyers) were also collected, but provided no substantial contribution to the …

This study employs a survey of undergraduate business school freshmen to examine factors that influence their decision to study business and whether these factors differ by gender. Specifically, the study examines internal factors, such as students’ perceived aptitudes and interests in the subject; external factors, such as compensation and job availability; and social/interpersonal influences, such as input of teachers, school counselors, parents, and friends. This paper follows up on the authors’ earlier work, which found that despite an increase in the number of male students enrolled in business programs across the nation during the period between 2003 and 2011, female …

Academic Advising Structures That Support First-Year Student Success And Retention, Brett Leland Mcfarlane
Brett McFarlane
Academic advising has been touted as a key to student success and retention. Today's academic advising delivery models vary considerably and little is known about the efficiency and effectiveness of these models. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between how academic advising is delivered to first-year students at a four-year public, high research activity university located on the west coast and the students' satisfaction with advising, advising learning outcomes, and retention. In the study, responses of 628 first-year students to a survey which asked them about their attitudes toward and experiences with academic …

The Higher Education Authority recently reported an average drop-out rate of 16% for Irish third level students, which poses significant pedagogical and economic challenges across the educational sector and negatively impacts the Irish economy. With respect to tackling this issue, a considerable body of international research has identified a strong positive correlation between higher levels of emotional intelligence (EI) and increased levels of student engagement and academic attainment. A wealth of previous research has also shown that employers favour graduates who possess higher levels of EI, for example, Job Outlook Survey, 2008, therefore, increasing students’ levels of EI is also …
