Systematic Observation For Design Implementation: Exploring Children’S Cognitive Play Behavior Interaction In Natural, Mixed, Or Manufactured Behavior Settings, Zahra Zamani

Zahra Zamani

Many disciplines are currently exploring how physical environment attributes associate with children’s developmental behaviors. However, there is a lack of evidence-based design guidelines to amplify the play value of outdoor preschool settings. This study compared three types of behavior settings (natural, mixed, and manufactured) for their cognitive play behavior opportunities (functional, constructive, exploratory, dramatic, and games with rules). The Effect Of College Selection Factors On Persistence: An Examination Of Black And Latino Males In The Community College, Luke Wood, Frank Harris Iii Dec 2014

The Effect Of College Selection Factors On Persistence: An Examination Of Black And Latino Males In The Community College, Luke Wood, Frank Harris Iii

Frank Harris III

The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship (if any) between college selection factors and persistence for Black and Latino males in the community college. Using data derived from the Educational Longitudinal Study, backwards stepwise logistic regression models were developed for both groups. Findings are contextualized in light of Paulsen and St. John’s (1996) financial nexus model. In line with this model, this study found that financial matters indeed impacted college selection. In particular, this research illustrated that the availability of financial aid and low expenses at the institution were integral selection factors. Implications for future research are …

Meta-Analytic Study: Student Connectedness Across On-Ground, Fully Online, And Hybrid Contexts, Hannah L. Smith, An H. Dang, R. M. Mueller

Reed M. Mueller, Ph.D.

This meta-analysis was conducted to assess student sense of classroom community across three class contexts in post-secondary education settings: On-ground (OG), Hybrid (Hy), and Fully Online (FO). The group comparison of OG versus FO resulted in a significant difference (Hedge’s g = 0.749, p < 0.001), representing a relatively large effect size. The outcome of the student connectedness and overall SOC in the OG versus Hy condition resulted in a smaller effect size, which was not statistically significant (g = -.0158, p = 0.566). When results from OL and Hy conditions were aggregated, a significant difference between them and OG …

Cost-Oriented Agile Innovation For Mechatronics Management In Less Developed Regions, Edmond Hajrizi, Muzafer Shala, Valmir Hoxha, Larry Stapleton Dec 2014

Cost-Oriented Agile Innovation For Mechatronics Management In Less Developed Regions, Edmond Hajrizi, Muzafer Shala, Valmir Hoxha, Larry Stapleton

Edmond Hajrizi

Cost-oriented automation has a long tradition in IFAC and attracts a lot of attention in literatures associated, for example, with business process improvement. Whilst process-oriented cost reduction (such as LEAN for example) have been widely disseminated, in recent years practical cost-oriented solutions for automatic processes have not been reported so much in the literature. This is surprising given the increasing constraints upon, for example, manufacturing organisations in less developed peripheral regions. This paper re-energises the cost-oriented automation discourse by presenting projects which have used low-cost digital solutions to achieve potentially excellent results. The main contribution of the paper is to …

Cultural Learning Processes Through Local Wisdom: A Case Study On Adult And Lifelong Learning In Thailand, John A. Henschke Edd, Archanya Ratana-Ubol Edd

John A. Henschke

This article provides the background and concept of Thailand Lifelong Learning [LLL], even attempting a definition. The Thai LLL vision encompasses strategies for developing human qualities such as integrity, self-reliance, adaptability, resilience, and spirituality, to name a few. In some regards LLL seeks to recapture a more fully-developed perspective, on what in earlier times and places [1238 AD in Thailand], was called 'indigenous education', as it now pursues the benefits of a vibrant Learning Society. Progress of LLL in Thailand at times seems to be very slow and methodological rather than dynamic. It stems from developing a policy of learning …

Young Children And Families In The Information Age: Applications Of Technology In Early Childhood, Kelly Heider, Mary Renck Jalongo Dec 2014

Young Children And Families In The Information Age: Applications Of Technology In Early Childhood, Kelly Heider, Mary Renck Jalongo

Kelly Heider

This edited book presents the most recent theory, research and practice on information and technology literacy as it relates to the education of young children. Because computers have made it so easy to disseminate information, the amount of available information has grown at an exponential rate, making it impossible for educators to prepare students for the future without teaching them how to be effective information managers and technology users. Although much has been written about information literacy and technology literacy in secondary education, there is very little published research about these literacies in early childhood education. Recently, the National Association …

Christian Academic Motherhood In Secular Higher Education: The Experiences Of One Evangelical Christian, Christy M. Craft, Jo Maseberg-Tomlinson Dec 2014

Christian Academic Motherhood In Secular Higher Education: The Experiences Of One Evangelical Christian, Christy M. Craft, Jo Maseberg-Tomlinson

Christy Moran Craft

Although some scholars have highlighted the challenges faced by academic mothers in secular higher education and others have investigated those of Christian academic mothers in Christian higher education, none have looked at the experiences of Christian academic mothers in secular higher education. This autoethnographic study was conducted to analyze and to interpret one evangelical Christian’s experiences as a new academic mother at a secular university. The results of this study suggest that religious academic mothers working in secular higher education might benefit from drawing on religious-based strategies for dealing with the unique challenges that they face in their pursuit of …

How We Teach Core News Values In The Digital Age, Debbie Owens Dec 2014

How We Teach Core News Values In The Digital Age, Debbie Owens

Debbie Owens

The author addresses the issue of whether the fundamental journalistic elements: timeliness, proximity,
prominence, consequence (impact), and human interest are still relevant. If so, how do journalism educators teach broadcast-electronic media students the core values of professional standards of news in this digital age? While all the traditional core tenets continue to have varying degrees of relevance in the broadcast news industry, the impact of digital (social) media on the news environment has generated unique levels of engagement both between consumers and media entities and among consumers themselves. However, by no means does this phenomenon suggest that news values are …

Cyber Professional Development In Inquiry Science: An Iterative Evaluation Strategy, Heather Leary, Tamara Sumner, Cathy Ringstaff, Danielle Brown, Holly Devaul

Heather Leary, Ph.D.

Traditional models of professional development (PD) for teachers are changing, and there is a move to use approaches that capitalize on technological tools to deliver PD online and blended. Offering PD using these technological approaches has the potential to save resources for districts. It is crucial to determine if these approaches are meeting the needs of teachers, especially when they are learning to implement new curricula. This study describes the process two partnering institutions used, working in parallel, to conduct fine- and coarse-grained formative evaluation of a CyberPD environment and course. Data collection included surveys, online focus groups, and interviews. …
