This study was made to determine the value of high school records as a whole and of each of five high school subjects as devices for predicting college success. The method used in finding this value is that of correlation. The average of fifty students in each of five high school subjects, as well as high school average was correlated with college average, college weighted average, and with college grade points. The five high school subjects were English, mathematics, social science, science, and foreign language.

Some explanation is necessary of the method of procedure in compiling material for this thesis. The first step was really taken seven years ago. At that time the writer interviewed state officials at Sacramento, California, in the hope of obtaining state aid for educational finance in the Tule Lake section of the Klamath Irrigation Project. The Governor, the department of education, and the finance department were all consulted, but no legal way was discovered of using state money for the erection of school buildings in the district mentioned. The schools realize that they have scarcely touched the problem of attendance due to the fact that the public is not willing to pay for more trained workers. However it is a serious problem and there are many causes underlying the difficulty. Since truancy is the first overt act in violation of the law and irregular attendance is expensive to the system as well as to the children, conditions should be improved as soon as possible and the causes eliminated in so far as it is feasible. A study of conditions is important and urgent.
