Cooperative Learning In Higher Education: Comparison Of Hispanic And Non-Hispanic Graduate Student Reflections On Group Exams For Group Grades, Bobbette M. Morgan

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of the study is to share reflections from 202 non-Hispanic graduate students and 65 Hispanic students who have participated in cooperative written examinations for group grades. Reflections are clustered by themes identified from the students’ comments using Van Manen’s hermeneutic phenomonological approach which is how the direct statements of individuals describe a common shared experience add to the affective understanding of the event. The experience is examined and defined through reflections of the participants. Students experience positive interdependence within a cooperative learning setting. Results of 202 non-Hispanic graduate students and 65 Hispanic graduate students are compared.

'Divertual' Learning In Education Leadership: Implications Of Teaching Cultural Diversity Online Vs. Face To Face, Carolyn Ridenour, A. Llewellyn Simmons, Timothy J. Ilg, A. William Place

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

What are the consequences of this teaching-learning situation when graduate students in a Department of Educational Leadership are enrolled in a course on cultural diversity? Or, might the detachment provide a security in which the most honest and unadulterated discourse can be shared between teacher and students, as some proponents hope? In this chapter we explore responses to this dilemma. We attempt to capture this situation in our label: "divertual learning," a neologism …

The Political Value Of Knowledge And The Elite Schools' Curricula: To Ignore Or Not To Ignore Marxism?, Dana Neacsu

Law Faculty Publications

This article focuses on the content of elite law schools' curricula. Like all such debates, this one also reflects the author's political and social concerns, which at this time are questioning the impact such curricula have on the graduates' abilities to deliberate "upon the full range of issues which might appear directly or indirectly on a less impoverished [contemporary] political agenda." The Role Of Foreign Languages In Educating Lawyers For Transnational Challenges, Vivian Grosswald Curran Jan 2005

The Role Of Foreign Languages In Educating Lawyers For Transnational Challenges, Vivian Grosswald Curran

Articles

In a world in which every other country seems intent on teaching English to their youth, and in which the United States educational system does not place a high priority on teaching foreign languages, the American law student, dean and professor may doubt if foreign language knowledge is anything more than marginally helpful to law graduates. The usefulness of foreign languages to the United States lawyer gradually has been gaining increased recognition in the profession, …
