Collaborations On The Creative “Campus”, Nancy Cantor

Chancellor's Collection

The arts and higher education, as a report by the American Assembly1 noted last year, are "two powerful, historically embedded, endlessly re-invented sectors in American life. They coincide in the society as major arenas for education, experience and building knowledge. They coincide as major nonprofit actors in American life; they coincide as builders, as makers, as shapers of society’s values. They live together on campuses and in communities."

Institutes, Foundations, And Think Tanks: Conservative Influences On U.S. Public Schools, Deron R. Boyles May 2005

Institutes, Foundations, And Think Tanks: Conservative Influences On U.S. Public Schools, Deron R. Boyles

Educational Policy Studies Faculty Publications

While a complete analysis of the effects of conservative think tanks is beyond the scope of this article, we include the above passage as evidence of what, on a broad scale, the “idea brokers” have been working towards. While education is only one area where neoconservative think tanks seek to influence public policy, it has become the issue for many neoconservatives. In this article, we focus on four think tanks—The Manhattan Institute, The American Enterprise Institute, The Heritage Foundation, and The Thomas B. Fordham Foundation—and what they are doing to reshape public schools in ways more suitable to neoconservative and …

Defining The Phenomenon Of Teaching Christianly At A Christian College: A Study Conducted At Dordt College, Barb Hoekstra May 2005

Defining The Phenomenon Of Teaching Christianly At A Christian College: A Study Conducted At Dordt College, Barb Hoekstra

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

Despite the high value that Christian colleges place on teaching, there is scant literature on teaching christianly in higher education. Pedagogy that promotes Christian beliefs resides in the K-12 literature. Using the work of Van Brummelen (1988) and Van Dyk (2000) originally developed for teaching christianly at the K-12 level, a conceptual framework was developed. This study investigated what it means to teach christianly at a small Christian college. A qualitative, phenomenological approach was used to explore teachers’ perceptions and beliefs about teaching christianly in higher education. A criterion sampling strategy was used in selecting 10 participants who had the …

Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions For Depression: Review And Implications For School Personell [Sic], John W. Maag, Susan M. Swearer Napolitano May 2005

Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions For Depression: Review And Implications For School Personell [Sic], John W. Maag, Susan M. Swearer Napolitano

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Depression is one of the most commonly diagnosed psychiatric disorders among school-age youths. As such, school personnel should play an important role in the identification/assessment, and treatment of depression and related problems in school. School-based treatment of depression is especially relevant for students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) and learning disabilities (LD) because they may be at a higher risk than their non-disabled peers of displaying depressive symptomatology. Cognitive-behavioral interventions (CBls) have shown promise as an evidence-based treatment for childhood and adolescent depressive disorders. This article focuses on how CBI techniques can be used by school personnel under the …

An Examination Of Ethical Issues Pertaining To Educational Research, Greg Gallagher May 2005

An Examination Of Ethical Issues Pertaining To Educational Research, Greg Gallagher

Articles

The social sciences in general and educational researchers in particular have become more and more conscious of ethical propriety and the need for universally acceptable codes of ethical conduct in recent years. This newfound interest stems in part from criticisms of innovative contemporary research methodologies, and the fear that they may be at odds with certain fundamental ethical principles. This, in turn, has resulted in the integrity and validity of some of these new contemporary styles of research being held up to scrutiny and debated by adherents to the more conventional research methodologies. This paper begins by tracing back to …

Researching From The Inside - Does It Compromise Validity? - A Discussion, Pauline Rooney May 2005

Researching From The Inside - Does It Compromise Validity? - A Discussion, Pauline Rooney

Articles

The concept of validity in social research is the subject of much debate. It is a complex and problematic issue, especially because it is difficult to define validity. In traditional studies, validity usually referred to the degree to which the study accurately reflected the issue or topic that the research was attempting to measure (Feldman 2003). More specifically, this type of validity also referred to the role of research instruments and their appropriateness for collecting data that answers the research questions (Black and Champion 1976). Such positivist accounts assumed that science could produce objective knowledge and thus the researcher's goal …

Lincoln, Nebraska

May, 2005

This ex post facto nonexperimental constructive replication study revisited earlier work by Grusky (1961, 1963), Gamson and Scotch (1964), and Gordon and Becker (1964) on whether Major League Baseball (MLB) managerial succession reflected scapegoating behaviors. Also there was interest in learning if selected independent variables were predictive of a team’s won-loss record, termed the productivity index.

Nineteen-years of relevant …

Transactional Literature Circles And The Reading Comprehension Of At-Risk English Learners In The Mainstream Classroom, Cheryl Bowen (Mcelvain) May 2005

Transactional Literature Circles And The Reading Comprehension Of At-Risk English Learners In The Mainstream Classroom, Cheryl Bowen (Mcelvain)

Teacher Education

The intent of this study is to explore the effects of a critical model of literacy instruction on the reading comprehension of mainstreamed English learners who have been identified at-risk by their local educational agency. It investigates how Transactional Literature Circles (TLC) affect the development of strategic literacy skills in thirteen intermediate grade classrooms. The link between the student, his/her peers, the teacher, the curriculum, and the family is considered as each play an important role in the construction of the learning community, which extends beyond the boundaries of the school.

When the school bell rings, thousands of elementary school …
