The Impact Of Mentoring Practices On New Faculty And Staff, Paige Lloyd Dec 2023

The Impact Of Mentoring Practices On New Faculty And Staff, Paige Lloyd

Education Theses and Dissertations

Annually, schools nationwide welcome new educators to their facilities that bring with them a vast array of experiences. Onboarding tools such as mentoring or induction programs are often a customary practice, utilized to provide new educators with skills to assist them in the classroom as well as acclimate them to their new organization. Mentoring is often synonymous with induction programs and associated with the pairing of an experienced educator with a novice to the field or location that can offer support from instructional and classroom strategies to campus policies. With recent shifts in education and an ever-present national teacher crisis …

The Uteach Program: Minimizing The Disconnect Between Teacher Preparation Programs And Teaching Actualized, Chanel Howard Veazy Dec 2023

The Uteach Program: Minimizing The Disconnect Between Teacher Preparation Programs And Teaching Actualized, Chanel Howard Veazy

Education Theses and Dissertations

New teachers entering classrooms from teacher preparation programs are inadequately prepared to handle the demands of educating today's youth, as the country confronts teacher shortages in historic numbers, particularly in the fields of science and mathematics. The research underscores the pressing need for adequately prepared teachers in today's classrooms, particularly in addressing teacher shortages, which have been historically significant, especially in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields such as science and mathematics. To address these issues, the University of Texas at Austin introduced the UTeach program in 1997 with the aim of improving the quantity and quality of secondary …

Evaluation And Improvement Of Processes And Metrics In A Dual Credit Program, Kristian E. Fischer Nov 2023

Evaluation And Improvement Of Processes And Metrics In A Dual Credit Program, Kristian E. Fischer

Education Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation used convergent mixed methods design in a program implementation evaluation of a dual credit program. A binary logistic regression was performed on dual credit enrollment persistence. A stakeholder survey was deployed to parents, administrators, instructors and counselors associated with the dual credit program. A full review of district documents related to dual credit was included as part of the qualitative component. The results of the regression indicated non-significance in the predictor variables for the dependent variable of dual credit persistence. The emergent themes from the survey included concerns about student readiness for dual credit coursework and a need …

The first iteration of this study critically assessed the present state of RtI practices within a rural East Texas school, while the subsequent iteration was an evaluative exploration of implementing a phonics-based reading intervention. The second iteration investigates the impact of the Reading Horizons Elevate (RHE) intervention program on reading outcomes of sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students within a turnaround middle school in East Texas. This study focuses on the relevance of design-based …

The Science Of Reading: Informing Typical Literacy Practices And Improving Implementation Of Research-Informed Practices, Edward T. Anaya Aug 2023

The Science Of Reading: Informing Typical Literacy Practices And Improving Implementation Of Research-Informed Practices, Edward T. Anaya

Education Theses and Dissertations

More than twenty years have passed since the National Reading Panel (NRP) (2000) report attempted to answer the question: Does comprehension strategy instruction improve reading? After reviewing about 200 studies on comprehension strategy instruction, the NRP divided reading instruction into the “Big Five” components. The NRP recommended explicitly teaching phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Despite the panel’s expertise, national reading scores (NAEP, 2022) indicate persistently poor performance of most 4th and 8th graders after more than two decades since the NRP report. At the same time, a preponderance of evidence from scientifically based research continues to pursue improved …

Impact Of Social Emotional Learning On Exclusionary Discipline, Joanna T. Carrillo Rowley Jul 2023

Impact Of Social Emotional Learning On Exclusionary Discipline, Joanna T. Carrillo Rowley

Education Theses and Dissertations

A middle school campus in a Southeast urban community used a Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) Cycle, an inquiry method in improvement science, to address high exclusionary discipline rates by implementing Social Emotional Learning (SEL) strategies and Restorative Practices (RP) to transform school culture. A reform to a comprehensive discipline program was developed to minimize the amount of exclusionary discipline outcomes (in-school suspension [ISS], out-of- school suspension [OSS], and expulsion) among students while increasing student attendance rates, student achievement, and teacher retention. Three distinct cycles will be examined, each concentrating on a different problem of practice and intervention. These methods were introduced, practiced, …

Teachers' Use Of Assessment Data To Improve Instruction And Student Achievement, Donna Summers

Education Theses and Dissertations

This study addressed a problem of practice in a majority-minority suburban school district with a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Specifically, the problem of historically low sixth-grade reading achievement on the state assessment was investigated. The study took place in two phases. Both phases were built on the improvement science framework and used a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative sources included surveys of teachers, instructional coaches, and campus administrators and student achievement scores based on the Northwest Evaluation Association's (NWEA) Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Growth reading assessment. Qualitative sources included focus groups and site walkthroughs. In the first …

The research questions used for this study this evaluation were 1) What percent of students made progress in each reporting category (word study, grammar, and comprehension) in the Lexia PowerUp literacy program? 2) To what extent did the teachers …

The Role Of Cultural Capital In Improving Advanced Placement Outcomes, Kolbe Ricks Jun 2023

The Role Of Cultural Capital In Improving Advanced Placement Outcomes, Kolbe Ricks

Education Theses and Dissertations

This work delves into the potential benefits and criticism of Advanced Placement (AP) courses, with a specific focus on the necessity of cultural capital to address disparities in access and success. The researcher argues that the broad content coverage in AP courses often leads to conventional lecture-based instruction that does not value cultural capital and limits student engagement and outcomes. To rectify this, recommendations are made to incorporate pedagogical approaches like culturally relevant teaching and providing teacher feedback and support that allows for the successful implementation of these practices. Numerous studies indicate that participation in AP courses predicts success in …

The Role And Effectiveness Of Response To Intervention To Improve Elementary Students’ Reading Skills And Abilities, Natalie M. Weber Jan 2023

The Role And Effectiveness Of Response To Intervention To Improve Elementary Students’ Reading Skills And Abilities, Natalie M. Weber

Education Theses and Dissertations

Elementary students at a local elementary school were having reading difficulties and demonstrated a decreased performance on intervention measures, formal and summative assessments. Success in reading is imperative because students must read the content throughout their educational career and students must read the content on state assessments. Students’ success on state assessments determines placement of future intervention groupings in the next grade level, eligibility in extra-curricular activities and ultimately eligibility for high school graduation. The purpose of this evaluation study was to evaluate a pre-existing program to examine whether the implementation and use of Response to Intervention (RTI) was effective …
