Work-Study Innovative Teaching Programme (Wsitp) : Evaluation Report, Rod Mcdonald

Research outputs pre 2011

The Work Study Innovative Teaching Programme (WSITP) was introduced in 1977. This followed the submission of a research proposal to the Assistant Vice Principal (Research Planning and Development) of Churchlands College by a group of interested staff, and the subsequent approval by the College that the programme be offered on a pilot basis for one year.

To quote from the original proposal: "WSITP will use a continuous practice-teaching experience as a means of helping students to become teachers rather than just lecturing about teaching. The WSITP will be designed to assist students in their exploration and discovery of personal meanings …

Moora: Aboriginal Children In A Wheatbelt Town, Lois Tilbrook

Research outputs pre 2011

Moora town was established in 1875, when the railway from Midland Junction to Walkaway was built. There had always been Aborigines in the surrounding districts, and as land was taken up for farming, a number of them were employed as farmhands and domestics.

The town is the regional centre for the North Midlands, a subdivision of the Northern Agricultural Statistical Division of Western Australia. As such, it was developed to service the agricultural hinterland. The Northern Agricultural Statistical Division has a total population of 42,804 people (23,044 males and 19,766 females) of whom 1,828 or 4.6% are Aboriginal (1,003 males …

Child Language Development And The School, Sue Croome, Margaret Fairhall Jan 1976

Child Language Development And The School, Sue Croome, Margaret Fairhall

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Children's language emerges from the lives they lead and we cannot hope to make sense of it without understanding their lives. A considerable portion of their day is lived in school and this too becomes woven into their language - it is the particular kind of shared life created by all those who work together in a school which will determine how language will be used by teachers and pupils. However, the discussion of children's language must never lose sight of the context in which it occurs, not simply the immediate spur to speech and writing but the life from …

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The nineteen sixties were marked by a revival of interest In the theory of curriculum construction and innovation which was derived from a psychological perspective. The Disabled Reader And The Reading Process, P. D. Rousch Jan 1976

The Disabled Reader And The Reading Process, P. D. Rousch

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Traditionally we have come to regard the disabled reader as one who is deficient in ability to recognize words in isolation / context, whose word attack skills are so deficient that we throw up our hands in horror at his inability to come up with anything like what is in print, and who is generally unable to obtain a glimmer of understanding into the meaning of what he is reading. At a somewhat lower level than this type of reader is the illiterate and whether the illiterate is entitled to be regarded as a " reader ", disabled or otherwise, …

Social Learning For Children With Specific Learning Disabilities, K. A. Fulmer, H. J. Jenkins Jan 1976

Social Learning For Children With Specific Learning Disabilities, K. A. Fulmer, H. J. Jenkins

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The recent interest in curriculum development has empahasized the need for a framework in which to integrate many different education goals. Heiss and Mischio have proposed three criteria for a comprehensive curriculum. Good curricula which satisfy these conditions have been developed for use in the normal school programme. However, at present there is a great need for integrated curricula which attend to the special needs of children with general or specific learning disablilities.

The Assessment Of Teaching Practice : What Criteria Should We Choose?, C. P. Hodgson Jan 1976

The Assessment Of Teaching Practice : What Criteria Should We Choose?, C. P. Hodgson

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

For a number of years now, the practical element of pre-service teacher education has been taken in primary and secondary schools under the guidance of members of the school staff, and tutors from the college or university department of education. The tutor may also be called upon to give an assessment of the student's ability to teach. Despite various attempts to break away from assessments by grading, the fact remains that the majority of student-teachers practise are assessed this way. The recurrent problem, then, is on what criteria should the assessment be based?

Training Teachers To Facilitate Inquiry, J. H. Lake Jan 1976

Training Teachers To Facilitate Inquiry, J. H. Lake

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Within the broad context of the topic Pre-Service and In-Service Education, I have decided to focus my attention on one rather narrow aspect of the pre-service education of primary school teachers. The topic which I want to consider is one which I have called " Training Teachers to Facilitate Inquiry " The examples which I ' ll use are drawn primarily from the broad field of primary science education. However since the type of intellectual activity involved in inquiry is desired in all areas of the primary school curriculum, I trust that what I have to say will have application …

Energy Expenditure Of Grade Four School Children In Western Australia, T. W. Odgers, S. C. Langelaan, J. Henzell, C. Chapman

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

A composite team from the Public Health Service, the West Australian Institute of Technology, and the Graylands Teachers College conducted surveys on grade 7 children in 1974, and grade 4 children in 1975. The intention of the surveys was to find some relationship between the energy expenditure and the energy intake of each age group. As there is little information concerning the activity patterns of West Australian children the findings of these surveys would serve as a basis for more detailed reports into the physical fitness, activity and dietary balance of children in today's changing society. The study reported below …

1.2 co-ordinated development of overlapping areas of technical, further and tertiary education

1.3 community college and open-learning operation of tertiary institutions for greater benefit of local communities

The Practicum: Present And Future : Report On The National Conference On Teacher Education, Perth, Western Australia, 18-22 August 1975, Mount Lawley College Of Advanced Education Jan 1975

The Practicum: Present And Future : Report On The National Conference On Teacher Education, Perth, Western Australia, 18-22 August 1975, Mount Lawley College Of Advanced Education

Research outputs pre 2011

In Western Australia concern had been expressed among those involved in the professional preparation of teachers that there was a tendency to de-emphasize the practical components of courses in favour of the more theoretical academic disciplines.

There was a view expressed, perhaps rather parachially, that Western Australia, disadvantaged by distance for on-going communication between institutions, also appeared to be used very sparingly as a venue for conferences on education.

With this in mind College staff, early in 1974, decided to explore the possibility of mounting a national conference in Perth with the practicum of teacher education as its theme. A …

A Submission For The Award Of An Associate Diploma In Health Education, Claremont Teachers College Jan 1974

A Submission For The Award Of An Associate Diploma In Health Education, Claremont Teachers College

Research outputs pre 2011

Health education is a process which effects changes in the health practices of people and in the knowledge and attitudes related to such changes. Education is an internal process for the individual concerned. He educates himself, even though his education is assisted by such means as contacts with health workers, appeals directed to him, information made available, clarification of issues, alternatives, and consequences as a basis for a rational choice. Education thus places responsibility on the individual and is essentially different from a compliance approach. It involves motivation, communication and decision-making. Planned education must take into account the relevant knowledge …

Broggies On The Playground : Some Approaches To Creative Writing, Churchlands Teachers College Jan 1974

Broggies On The Playground : Some Approaches To Creative Writing, Churchlands Teachers College

Research outputs pre 2011

This is the second booklet of children's writing - and some approaches to teaching it - to be produced by this College. Once again all the writing comes from children at the Churchlands Primary School and the lessons were taken by members of an elective group.

There are examples of work from grades four to seven.

The length of each teaching period was only half an hour so there was little opportunity for students to re-write and improve on their first efforts. However, that particular insight which seems to be the prerogative of children is evident to some extent in …

Survey Of Education Of Aboriginal Children In Selected Western Australian Schools : (Preliminary Survey), C. Makin, D. Ibbotson Jan 1973

Survey Of Education Of Aboriginal Children In Selected Western Australian Schools : (Preliminary Survey), C. Makin, D. Ibbotson

Research outputs pre 2011

Information was sought late in 1972 about problems encountered by teachers in schools with a fairly high proportion of Aboriginal children. For this purpose a questionnaire was designed to elicit information about the school situation, the surrounding community, enrolment, age and experience of the teaching staff and actual pedagogical problems encountered and methods of dealing with them. Another principle aim was to ascertain the extent to which the curiculum had been adapted to local situations and to determine what implications this might have for pre-service and in-service training.

Social Science Source Book, Colin J. Marsh Jan 1971

Social Science Source Book, Colin J. Marsh

Research outputs pre 2011

During 1970, first year students at Mount Lawley Teachers' College undertook a course entitled. An Introduction to the Social Sciences. Courses in Social Science and Social Studies are not new, having been tried with varying degrees of success in other states of Australia and in overseas countries. However, in the course at this college, a multidiscipline approach has been planned, with Metropolitan Perth as the focal point of the study.

Too often, students enter a teachers' college with a 'wad' of factual knowledge about History or Economics or Geography. In the hustle and bustle of preparing for external examinations, they have …
