Curriculum And Assessment : A Question Of Politics?, Christine R. Brew, Gilah C. Leder
Curriculum And Assessment : A Question Of Politics?, Christine R. Brew, Gilah C. Leder
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) has been subject to ongoing modifications since its full introduction in 1992. These changes were largely driven by vocal opponents of this educational reform. In this paper we give voice to teachers charged with implementing the curriculum and assessment directives of the VCE. Specifically, we draw on the experiences of close to 500 senior mathematics teachers – through interview and survey data - to consider the impact on them of the evolution of the VCE.
Teacher Perceptions Of The Characteristics Of Effective Teachers Of Aboriginal Middle School Students, Mort Harslett, Bernard Harrison, John Godfrey, Gary Partington, Kaye Richer
Teacher Perceptions Of The Characteristics Of Effective Teachers Of Aboriginal Middle School Students, Mort Harslett, Bernard Harrison, John Godfrey, Gary Partington, Kaye Richer
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This paper reports a component of research that involved interviewing teachers identified as effective with Aboriginal students in selected primary and secondary schools in urban and regional Western Australia. The research shows that characteristics of effective teachers include understanding Aboriginal culture, history, and students’ home backgrounds; an ability to develop good relationships with Aboriginal students and their families, a sense of humour, and preparedness to invest time to interact with Aboriginal students out of the classroom in order to strengthen relationships. The research also indicates that effective teachers understand that Aboriginal students are often more independent than others, do not …

Critical Reflective Practice And Workplace Learning : Impediments And Possibilities In Teacher Education, Barry Down, Carol Hogan
Critical Reflective Practice And Workplace Learning : Impediments And Possibilities In Teacher Education, Barry Down, Carol Hogan
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Professional practica are an essential part of teacher education and other professional education programs, but university staff often express concern that prac. experiences are fundamentally conservative, emphasising preparation for the status quo rather than for what might be. In recent years other forms of workplace-based university learning have been devised, where staff have sought to build units of study around a core of reflective practice, action research and professional development. This paper describes one such initiative, a final semester internship for fourth year education students which enabled them to design and negotiate their own professional development plans in any one …
Transference And Psychological-Mindedness In Teachers, Erin Hanifin, Stephen Appel
Transference And Psychological-Mindedness In Teachers, Erin Hanifin, Stephen Appel
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The article is an argument for the relevance for our understanding of the pedagogic relationship of Freud’s discovery of transference. Commonalities between teaching and psychoanalysis are reviewed prior to a discussion of how the concept of transference might be applied to teaching, particularly to improving the teacher’s ‘psychological-mindedness’. The article concludes by considering the moral/professional issue of teachers making use of the transference processes at work in their classrooms.
When Is A Teacher Or School Liable In Negligence?, Helen Newnham
When Is A Teacher Or School Liable In Negligence?, Helen Newnham
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The law is increasing affecting the practice of education. The most likely reason a teacher or school will face legal action is in negligence where a student has been injured while under the school’s protection. This may occur in a variety of settings. To satisfy the elements of the tort of negligence the student who becomes in law the plaintiff must prove that a duty of care was owed, that the duty was breached, by not maintaining the appropriate standard and that the injury was a reasonably foreseeable consequence of that breach of duty. It would be rare for a …
Building The Veco Online Community : A Model For Encouraging Novices., Michelle Williams, Janine Bowes.
Building The Veco Online Community : A Model For Encouraging Novices., Michelle Williams, Janine Bowes.
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Building online networks and designing network activity is becoming central to how educators and other education-based professionals work, train others and teach students. It is only since 1995 that Internet connectivity in Australia has provided the critical mass and momentum which alters how people work, who they work with and how they learn. Thus the business of helping professional networks develop and become part of the lives of their members is uncharted territory and an area for research and development for educators in all fields. This paper shares the story of the development of an Australian Network for Vocational Education …

Physical And Sport Education In Australia: Organisation, Placement And Related Issues, Andrew Taggart, Stephen Goodwin
Research outputs pre 2011
This paper provides a review of how physical and sport education in Australian schools is organised and administered. The roles and responsibilities of education and sport personnel are outlined. Issues of equity are addressed as is the extent of student participation. Implementation of physical and sport education programs, the links between PE and sport and teacher involvement are also discussed. The context of the new millennium and the place of government schools in Australia provides a backdrop for the interpretation of the review. The review assumes an advocacy orientation, and so presents a position paper that reacts to the macropolitical …

Regular Teachers' Attitudes To The Need For Additional Classroom Support For Integrated Students With Intellectual Disabilities, Rory Mcnally
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The purpose of this study was to examine regular classroom teachers' attitudes to additional classroom support, both physical and personnel, for students with mild and severe intellectual disabilities who may be integrated into regular classrooms. The concerns of the regular classroom teachers with regard to the successful inclusion of students with intellectual disabilities are certainly merit addressing. As the regular classroom teachers are largely responsible for the education of these integrated students, it is worthwhile to examine their perceived support levels in relation to integrated students with intellectual disabilities. It is anticipated that the results of this study will prove …
Drama Praxis : Rural Arts Workers And Lifelong Learning : A Phenomenological Study, Susan E. Gibson
Drama Praxis : Rural Arts Workers And Lifelong Learning : A Phenomenological Study, Susan E. Gibson
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The purpose of this study is to explore and describe the experiences of a specific group of arts workers in an isolated rural community in the South West of Western Australia. These participants have all worked in the community as arts workers for an extended period of time. Through phenomenological research, the telling of these workers stories, it is anticipated that the research will highlight, strengthen and enrich the political and economic positions of these workers. The study is based on the assumptions and pre-conceptions that geographical and cultural isolation contributes to significant problems and situations such as communication that …
The Professional Development Of Beginning Teachers Of Primary Mathematics, Robert Leonard Sparrow
The Professional Development Of Beginning Teachers Of Primary Mathematics, Robert Leonard Sparrow
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Recent documents have recommended a style of teaching for primary classrooms that favours a constructivist viewpoint of learning. The actuality of mathematics classrooms is different from this vision. Newly trained teachers while exposed to, and expounding, a constructivist philosophy are, in many cases, implementing a more traditional, teacher-centred approach to classroom practice. The purpose of this study was twofold: to investigate factors which influence the pedagogical practices and beliefs of beginning teachers of mathematics in primary classrooms and secondly to evaluate a professional development support model for beginning primary mathematics teachers. A model for professional development and support of beginning …
When Teachers Are Victims : A Study Of Support In Western Australian Government Schools For Teachers Who Have Been Assaulted By Students, Rebecca Evans
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The aims of this study were to determine the personal effects of student assault upon a teacher and what assaulted teachers feel that they need in the way of support. In particular, I wanted the study to focus on the personal aspects of the cases as I was convinced that assaulted teachers experience similar anxieties, fears and barriers to support and similar difficulties in having those feelings recognised. Many clinical studies of assault victim support have been conducted, however, seemingly none of them are specifically related to assault by a student upon a teacher. This specific type of assault involves …
Influence Of Home And School Environments On The Academic Performance Of Chinese-Australian And Anglo-Australian Students Studying At An Academically-Oriented High School In Perth, Western Australia, Ranbir Singh Malik
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Although minority status has been associated with low academic achievement, the “high Asian achieving syndrome" remains as one of the unresolved sociological puzzles. Consistent evidence suggests that regardless of the family status, children from the Asian migrant families, settled in the industrialised countries, tend to perform academically better than their counterparts from the dominant group. This disparity is attributed to a number of factors, which taken separately, do not address this complex issue. In Australia little research has been done to compare the home environment and school experiences of children coming from Chinese-Australian and Anglo-Australian families even though the number …
Target Language Avoidance By Thai Teachers Of English: Thai Teachers' Beliefs, Sasithorn Vacharaskunee
Target Language Avoidance By Thai Teachers Of English: Thai Teachers' Beliefs, Sasithorn Vacharaskunee
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Interactionist theories of second language acquisition (SLA) claim that both comprehensible input and modified interaction in the target language are necessary for language learning. In the foreign language context, little opportunity exists for such input simply through exposure to the target language outside the classroom. Therefore, the quantity as well as quality of input within classrooms is especially important. However in spite of this fact many non-native teachers of second language, including English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers, tend to avoid using the target language in their classrooms. This has serious pedagogic implications. Thai teachers are typical of many …
Aboriginal Students Perceptions Of The Effect Of Vocational Education And Training On Post School Experiences, Steven J. Florisson
Aboriginal Students Perceptions Of The Effect Of Vocational Education And Training On Post School Experiences, Steven J. Florisson
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Over the past decade there have been dramatic and unprecedented changes in post compulsory education, with an increase of over 40% for year 12 retention rates to 76.6% in 1992 and huge expansion of year 11 and 12 vocational education and training programs. However, for Aboriginal past compulsory age students, the picture is very different. In 1993 the year 12 Aboriginal retention rate was only 24.48% or 982 students (Australia wide), and by 1996 only 10% of the indigenous 15 and older population had any post school qualification, compared to 35% of the total population. Only 34% of West Australian …
The Effects Of Incorporating A Word Processor Into A Writing Program: Seven Individual Case Studies, Natalie Beck
The Effects Of Incorporating A Word Processor Into A Writing Program: Seven Individual Case Studies, Natalie Beck
Theses : Honours
Writing is a "complex interplay of social, physical, and cognitive factors" (Daiute, 1985a, p.1) and an essential part of every young child's school life. However, "every school has at least a few children who can be classified as non-writers" (Aumack, 1985, p.46). Some children are often inhibited and "frustrated when they attempt to express themselves with pencil and paper'' (Aumack, 1985, p.46) and are put off by the thought of writing, erasing and rewriting, thus producing "children who do not want to write" (Aumack, 1985. p.46). In response to these statements, this qualitative study examined the effects of incorporating a …
Factors Affecting The Non-Selection Of Year Eleven Physical Education Studies By Female Students In A Rural Western Australian High School, Fiona Cameron
Theses : Honours
This study of year eleven female students at a rural Western Australian high school, focused firstly on why students were choosing not to enrol in Physical Education Studies (PES) and secondly what students believed would improve student enrolment. A two-stage qualitative research approach was utilised. The first stage involved creating a school profile and conducting a survey of 71 year eleven females. The second stage involved a three-step process of interviewing three year eleven females who were selected on the basis of not enrolling in PES and their responses on the survey slips. Findings suggested that the major factors effecting …
Understanding My Work : Reflections On Implementing A Season Of Sepep, Kevin Black
Understanding My Work : Reflections On Implementing A Season Of Sepep, Kevin Black
Theses : Honours
Implementing new curriculum models for the first time can be difficult for teachers, especially those recently graduated. This study captured some of these challenges and difficulties, and the substantial rewards, through recording the teacher's reactions and reflections as he implemented his first season of SEPEP. The perceptions of the students involved in the season were recorded as a way of validating the teacher's reflections. SEPEP is a student centered physical education program which seeks to capture the positive aspects of community sport, and allows students the opportunity to be involved as players, in team roles such as captain, coach and …
Literature Review : Teachers' Knowledge And Attitudes About Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd), Bruna Bekle
Literature Review : Teachers' Knowledge And Attitudes About Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd), Bruna Bekle
Theses : Honours
ADHD is a neuro-developmental disorder that is diagnosed in 3 to 6% of the childhood population in a diversity of cultures and a variety of geographical locations. It presents as a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity, with boys being over-represented by approximately 3 to 1. High levels of comorbidity between ADHD and a number of other disorders, including Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder, and learning disabilities, have been identified. This review will examine the historical development of the understanding of ADHD, knowledge of its etiology, and the influence of this disorder in the school environment. In particular, it will …

Theses : Honours
The narrative content of preschool children's drawing is the focus of this study. The purpose of this study was to raise educators, preschool teachers and parents awareness of the narrative content of preschool children’s drawings and to alert them to how children of this age communicate through their drawings. A school with an operational pre-primary class was selected from the Northern Metropolitan education district of Perth. Twelve pre-school children were selected on the basis of their participation in drawing activities. The researcher observed the children at work over a period of eight sessions. A qualitative descriptive research method was used …
The Integrated Expressive Arts And Humanities : Coping With Curriculum Change, Linley Campbell
The Integrated Expressive Arts And Humanities : Coping With Curriculum Change, Linley Campbell
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The concept of curriculum integration in education has recently received increased attention. This has been largely due to the introduction of Learning Area Profiles, Statements and Outcomes, and most recently the Curriculum Framework. 'Integration, breadth and balance' is one of the seven key principles underlying The Curriculum Framework for Western Australian Schools. (Curriculum Council of Western Australia, 1998). Collectively, these documents emphasise the integration of knowledge, skills and values in the eight key learning areas of the curriculum. Such a holistic view of the curriculum is considered to be fundamental to sound educational practice.
Reading The World Of University : What Counts?, Pamela Green, Gloria Latham
Reading The World Of University : What Counts?, Pamela Green, Gloria Latham
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This paper will address the issues encountered by first year students in reading and reshaping the culture of university. The interim findings of a six year study will be dismantled in order to uncover what counts in the experience of first year university and the ramifications for educational practice and discourse. Feedback from staff continues to indicate that there is growing disparity between their expectations of first year students and student performance in areas such as independent learning, research skills, academic reading and writing, as well as the use of new technologies. There also seems to be a gap between …

Sense Of Belonging And Self-Esteem : What Are The Implications For Educational Outcomes Of Secondary School Students? : A Literature Review, Lynne Strudwicke
Theses : Honours
In this technological era a complete secondary education is more important than ever. Therefore, this review examines the issues surrounding students' at risk of dropping out of school. School factors such as the relevance of the curriculum, support. and also methods of assessment have each been associated with the dropout issue. These factors may also impact on students' sense of belonging, self-concept and self-esteem in negative or positive ways. Sense of belonging is a fundamental need. In schools it has been found to relate directly to achievement, indicating that mainly higher achieving students benefit from having this need fulfilled. Sense …
