Simulating Uniform- And Triangular- Based Double Power Method Distributions, Mohan Pant, Todd C. Headrick Jan 2017

Simulating Uniform- And Triangular- Based Double Power Method Distributions, Mohan Pant, Todd C. Headrick

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications - Archive

Power method (PM) polynomials have been used for simulating non-normal distributions in a variety of settings such as toxicology research, price risk, business-cycle features, microarray analysis, computer adaptive testing, and structural equation modeling. A majority of these applications are based on the method of matching product moments (e.g., skew and kurtosis). However, estimators of skew and kurtosis can be (a) substantially biased, (b) highly dispersed, or (c) influenced by outliers. To address this limitation, two families of double-uniform-PM and double-triangular-PM distributions are characterized through the method of 𝐿-moments using a doubling technique. The 𝐿-moment based procedure is contrasted with the

Family therapists have a unique opportunity to contribute toward the reduction of widespread mental health disparities impacting diverse populations by developing applied lines of research focused on cultural adaptation. For example, although evidence-based prevention parent training (PT) interventions have been found to be efficacious with various Euro-American populations, there is a pressing need to understand which specific components of PT interventions are perceived by ethnic minority parents as having the highest impact on their parenting practices. Equally important is to examine the perceived cultural relevance of adapted PT interventions. This qualitative investigation had the primary objective of comparing and contrasting

Student Opportunities At Florida International University: A Snapshot, Allen Varela, Jorge Torres

Florida Statewide Symposium: Best Practices in Undergraduate Research

The Honors College (HC) was asked by the FIU Provost to take the lead in creating an innovative culture for undergraduate research at FIU. Our presentation is about how two of the elements of HC’s successful research program have been expanded university-wide: our Conference for Undergraduate Research (CURFIU) and our research opportunity database, the FIU Undergraduate Research Portal. The creation of this database provides an interactive site with information about research opportunities, conferences, scholarships, and a subscription system for students. We also discuss the challenges we face as we try to promote undergraduate research in an environment of limited resources.

Flipping Online Instruction, Julie G. Alemany Sep 2016

Flipping Online Instruction, Julie G. Alemany

Florida Distance Learning Association Conference

Flipped model of instruction for online instruction is effectively being used by faculty in higher education. What is the flipped classroom? The flipped classroom is a pedagogical model in which the typical lecture elements of a course are reversed. Short video or recorded lectures are viewed by students before the online session. The online session is devoted to facilitating the knowledge, understanding, and discussion of the content. During online class sessions, instructors function as facilitators, encouraging students in individual inquiry. The online session time is focused on exercises, projects, and/or discussion.

Flipped classroom draws on such concepts as active learning

Publications and Research

The goal of this talk is to showcase some visualization projects that we developed for a 3-day Code in R summer program, designed to inspire the creative side of our STEM students by engaging them with computational projects that we developed with the purpose of mixing calculus level math and code to create complex geometric patterns. One of the goals of this program was to attract more minority and female students into applied math and computer science majors.

The projects are designed to be implemented using the high-level, open-source and free computational environment R, a popular software in industry for

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

This unit focuses on how students spend free time and comparing and contrasting free time in different cultures. It is intended to be taught in the middle of a Spanish I course. Students will understand that 1) Free time activities enjoyed by young people are often similar despite differences in culture, and that 2) Experiences can change for an individual when shared with someone else and a shared experience can affect relationships between people. By the end of the unit, students will be able to 1. talk about what I/others do and where I/others go in free time, 2.extend an

Honors Projects

The core of my honors project includes a 12-day unit plan for teaching creative writing in the form of narratives. I created lessons for 12 days, created the materials needed for each day, and created a website where my work has been displayed for my future classroom. The website link is: teachcreatewrite.weebly.com. All materials for the unit plan are broken down by day, and I chose to expand upon 3 days in a short lesson plan template.

International Students In Transition: Voices Of Chinese Doctoral Students In A U.S. Research University, Yi Leaf Zhang

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Faculty Publications - Archive

In this study, I focused on international Chinese doctoral students and sought to better understand their lived experience in transition to U.S. higher education. I also aimed to explore strategies that can be employed to improve these students’ academic and sociocultural experiences on American campuses. Guided by the adult transition theory (Goodman, Schlossberg & Anderson, 2006), this study used an interpretive phenomenological method. Qualitative data were collected from in-depth focus group interviews. The findings of this study informed higher education educators and practitioners about unique challenges faced by international Chinese graduates in transition and provided insightful knowledge for new practice,

School dropout continues to be a societal and educational concern today. There are various eligibilities which identify students as being at risk for school dropout. This study uses the Educational Longitudinal Survey of 2002 (ELS:2002) and its definition of the term 'at risk' to explore the impacts of varying levels of risk, students self-beliefs, and the level of effort and persistence applied to academic tasks on level of educational attainment by age 26 in at-risk youth. ELS:2002 data is used to select the final study sample (n=4,002). This study demonstrates that the level of risk (i.e., number of at-risk factors

Our students consistently hand in assignments late, or complete them at the last minute. Why is it that they know about assignments all term long yet only begin them the night before the assignment is due? Based on a career-focused learning community at Kingsborough Community College of the City University of New York, this article looks at ways to help our “millennial” students develop better time management skills. It shows how time management and prioritizing can be introduced as a tool for success in college and life and offers suggestions to better engage students in getting assignments done in a
